Steve Kidd - President

President’s Corner

By the time you read this, 2011 will be behind us and hopefully everyone had a happy and safe New Years Eve. If you missed the GCR holiday party at the beautiful Lago Mar Country Club in December, you not only missed a great time, but also the presentation of awards and recognition of our members who contributed significantly during the course

of 2011. Also recognized were the Autocross champs who competed in our series and won their respective classes. Another highlight of the evening was Emily Santiago, from Braman Porsche in Palm Beach who arrived in a beautiful new Carrera GTS…in RED (with a bow), and showed it off during one of our breaks. Our thanks again to Emily, Dan Diamond and the rest of the staff at Braman for sponsoring the Holiday party trophies and recognition awards. It should be mentioned also that Braman Porsche hosted a wine and cheese social at their dealership the week before the holiday party that was well attended and fun for all. Additionally, ALL the show room cars were adorned in red bows! Another couple that deserves Holiday party recognition is Ed and Beena Kohly for their persistence in getting thru difficult and unusual challenges that were overcome in order to make this party happen. While I’m sure there will be more “party “details in other articles this month , it is important to again mention the winners of our 3 major honors that were awarded at the Holiday party. Family of the Year in 2011 went to another branch of the Ortega clan….The Laz Ortega family with Laz, wife Annie and their kids Gio and Catalina. The rookie of the year went to another branch of the Ortega tree….Vivian Ortega, who took over as Palm Beach Social chair and quickly showed her organizational skills and ability to get-r-dun. The enthusiast of the year award was presented to Darryl Brushaber, who not only participates in just about every event, but more importantly steps up and eagerly offers to help in whatever needs to be done. On a final note regarding the Holiday party, this year’s charity was the Crossroads food bank that GCR adopted and offered up 7 large boxes of food for the needy during this Holiday season. Special recognition goes to Cynthia Fluhart for bringing the most food and to Dottie Kidd for organizing the transportation and pick-up of the food. The final event of the evening was the introduction of the officers and Board for 2012.While there are few changes in position our list of “who’s who” gives a good balance of old and new, experience and modernization, and of course the goal to make GCR one of the most progressive regions in PCA and hopefully a serious contender for PCA region of the year in the future. The list of GCR accomplishments for 2011 is long and includes a great mix of different types of events all thru the entire region. This entire list deserves a separate article but hopefully will be condensed and best spelled out in our application for region of the year.

Who’s up for a trip to Salt Lake City for Parade 2012?….Hopefully GCR will get its long overdue recognition for website and newsletter excellence, as well as one of the major awards, with the crown jewel being PCA region of the year. This year award deadlines have been moved up to March 1 so we’ll be putting our efforts in high gear to put together great submissions and hopefully hit the mark. Does anyone out there have experience putting together award winning presentations?….If so and you would like to be part of the team please go to the PCA website and take a look at the form/criteria for region of the year and let me know what ideas you have. We have great subject matter and had a great entry last year, but need that extra spin to win. On a closing note, I would like to thank our members for making our region vibrant and fun and especially the Officers, Directors, Committee chairs and helpers that give of themselves because they enjoy the cars, the people and club. Without this initiative and talent, innovation would suffer and our region would be….well…just another region. Additional thanks to all those that donated not only time but items such as loner helmets or computers or other materials for the club. Another example of above and beyond service is the folks behind the scenes who offer their talents and rarely receive any front end recognition such as our graphic artists, writers and design folks who create beautiful flyers, artwork and awards layout. Additionally I wish to thank the businesses that have not only sponsored events such as socials, board meetings and gifts /door prizes for activities, but also contributed to special situations such Champion Motors who sponsored our Tour to Savanna T-shirt for the Porsche Parade and Braman Porsche for sponsoring the Autocross and special recognition awards for the Holiday Party. Want to be part of the action for 2012….we can always use talent, and sponsorship so give me a call if you have an idea that hopefully can be a win-win proposition. Some of the opportunities that we can always entertain are sponsors for a Quarterly post card, board meeting, membership meeting or jacket/t-shirt/trophy sponsors for special events. The list goes on and on….give me a call with your ideas!

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Fred Kohly, Concours ChairConcours Corner

I have often said that “its incredible what comes out of peoples garages” and marvel sometimes at the beautiful cars stored about that one hardly sees yet

show up at shows, Concours events or more often see driving down the road on a clear cool Sunday afternoon.

About two years ago I discovered an enthusiast that had two 930 Turbos (‘88 &’89) in his garage which he hardly drives. They are both stunning and very low mileage cars and he lives less than a mile from my house! How do you like that, I thought my good friend Skip Ernst and I were the only ones in the neighborhood that appreciated the older air cooled cars.

In addition to interesting cars, there

are a lot of interesting owners. James Hondros is one of those owners and I asked James to share a little about his story and admiration for Porsches and particularly the vintage ones. James owns several of these marvelous older cars and has a small collection, each I might add, in impeccable Concours condition and I’m sure has shelves full of trophies for his many wins. James, thanks for your contribution to our club this month.

Porsche Concours Story by James Hondros

Although my daily involvement with very interesting automobiles for the last twenty five years would suggest a hobby like boating or even maybe golf, I still choose to spend the majority of my leisure time with vintage and contemporary motorcars, especially Porsche. I was born and raised in Athens, Greece but at an early age my studies took me to a small university town in Italy. Chieti is a picturesque medieval town elevated at 1,100 ft. in the Abruzzo region and among other things is where the Great Juan Manuel Fangio’s origins are from. It was there that I was immersed in the Italian car counter culture, hill climbing on the weekends with modified cheap Fiat

Mirafiori’s, Alfa Quadr i fog l io ’s , A u t o b i a n c h i Abarth’s, and Lancia Fulvia’s. Contrary to the American muscle car scene of the era or even the well heeled German sports car society, equipping a little 1.3 litter car with an ANSA exhaust or a set of velocity stacks for the tiny Webbers hoping to gain an extra 5hp felt pretty special.

An air-cooled Porsche was not only considered just a fancy VW but was also outrageously expensive, overall it did not have the soul of an Italian thoroughbred... or at least that’s what we thought at the time. While I was gradually losing interest in my medical studies at a great disappointment

to my parents I was gaining a vast interest in Motorsports. Early 80’s was the time when Derek Bell and Jacky Ickx were charging hard on the Mulsanne Straight with the all-conquering 956 (not exactly a sporting Beetle) and when the 930 Turbo was considered the business executive express of the Autobahn.

My first experience behind the wheel of a Porsche was an invitation to a time-trial with a friend’s 76 Club Sport at the Autodromo di Pescara. I don’t remember doing well but I do remember that I have never had so much fun ever before and all that while trying to negotiate the constant over-steer through every apex of a car with an engine hanging aft of the rear axle. I was

8 Die Porsche Kassette | January 2012

Page 9: January 2012 Kassette

intoxicated or I would rather say hooked for life. To keep pursuing Motorsports was beyond my financial means and making a career from such had become very difficult since my ambition was exceeding by far my talent. One thing was for sure I had to be around motorcars.

Fast forward to the United States, having worked for several manufacturers in the retail field of exotic automobiles, mainly Italian and British and while still enjoying an occasional club race, I attended Pebble Beach for the first time in 1992. I remember seeing next to the ferocious Kremer 935 K3 a frail looking 550 spyder with Fletcher Aviation scriptures painted all over its silver body. I have heard or seen this model before somewhere but didn’t know much – as a matter of fact I was among the people who thought that James Dean was killed in a 356. Right then I started developing a fancy for vintage sports cars from Zuffenhausen.

They say that as we age we tend to become more nostalgic or maybe it is just the timeless charm of these temperamental machines. That could also be the case since a 356 or an early 911 brings back fond memories but I strongly believe that it is the golden age of motorsports especially for Porsche that makes us appreciate the ingenuity and character of these motoring icons.

Learning, understanding and restoring these wonderful cars continues to be a challenging adventure. I have been lucky enough to have a supportive girlfriend Emily who due to her direct involvement with Porsche automobiles has quite an understanding for my passion and good people like Rodger Hawley of Orbit Racing that throughout the years with his knowledge and technical skills has helped me to maintain as well as improve the quality level of my cars.

I have been affiliated with several clubs and car societies and without trying to quote the usual flatteries I feel that the PCA with its different chapters and registries including the GC is by far the most passionate crowd that I have ever encountered as an automotive professional and as an enthusiast.

GCR Holiday Party

Lago Mar Country Club was the ideal place to host this year’s holiday party. It was a beautiful and elegant evening and 77 Porsche members came out to celebrate with us. We wanted to reflect the season, so the foyer was decorated in red and gold and the main dining room in red and silver. It was beautiful and reflected the holidays spectacularly. We were even asked to leave some of our decorations because it looked so great!!

The evening started out with hors d’oeuvres being served poolside. After members signed in, they were asked to browse through the numerous items for bidding then they proceeded to the pool area where the hors d’oeuvres were being served butler style. The weather was also perfect.

At 8 pm the party was moved inside the main dining room. Steve Kidd made the welcome remarks and made a few announcements and then the buffet was opened. The food was probably one of the most memorable parts of the evening. It was absolutely delicious and there was a lot, a lot of food and throughout the entire evening door prizes and raffle prizes were drawn.

Numerous awards were given throughout the evening and all the event chairs spoke briefly regarding their past and upcoming events. Enthusiast of the year was awarded to Darryl Brushaber. Family of the year was Laz Ortega and family and Rookie of the year was Vivian Ortega.

Our own Porsche members donated the raffle prizes. These included:Briny Pub; Felicitas; Stan & Neida Pearlman; Ed and Beena Kohly; Link Evelith and Diane Thoman; Mike and Barbara Joffee; Bob Varela with Foreign Affairs Motorsports; KMW Motorsports; Steve and Dottie Kidd; Autocross Team; DE Team; Tuners Motorsports and Fibernew. These people and companies were responsible for the wonderful prizes that our members were able to win.

Special thanks to Emily Santiago and Braman Porsche of Palm Beach who donated the autocross trophies. She also brought a new ,2012 , red Carrera GTS to the party complete with the red bow. Emily parked the car at the front of the entrance of the building and displayed it there. That car was gorgeous and I know everyone wanted to take it home!

I couldn’t do this event without both Steve and Dottie Kidd and Ed Kohly who helped with the decorations and getting the place ready for our party, as well as Gio Cardoso for the evening’s music. It takes a lot of people to throw an event like this, and these people were there to make my job easier.

Finally, this year we decided to make our charitable donations to Crossroads Food Bank, Inc. An association that caters to single parents, unemployed, underemployed and disabled people. All our members were very generous. We ended up with 7 huge boxes of food that were picked up from Dottie and Steve’s house. Thanks to Steve and Dottie for being the pick up location and thanks to all our members for giving so much. Your thoughtfulness was appreciated.

Overall, the party was a huge success. Everything went very well and everyone had a great time. I look forward to seeing everyone in 2012, Happy New Year!

Vero Beach Historic Autocross Grand Prix of Vero BeachFeburary 26, 2012

The Grand Prix of Vero Beach is scheduled for Sun., Feb. 26, 2012. The overall objective of this event is to make this new annual autocross the finest ever held in the state. It will commemorate the “60th anniversary of the 6 & 12 Hour Sportscar Endurance Races held in Vero Beach, 1951 and 52.”

Porsches won their class, plus 2 and 3rd places both years. Numerous, now famous, drivers raced in Vero and, of course, these events PRECEDED Sebring and Daytona, as well as most other sportscar races in the US !

The event will be a joint regions PCA autocross, but, open to all other sportscars. Open exhausts will be allowed. Four runs per driver.

An incredible, new venue as been secured for this autocross. Grand Harbor, a country club / yacht club development has agreed to have the event take place on a .9 mile paved “road course” (a new develop-ment 3 years ago, never completed), surrounded by lovely walls, and 4-way entry / exit gates. The road weaves thru changes in elevation, soft curves, 90 degree turns and 2 lakes. Aluminum bleachers, flags and banners will be erected by Grand Harbor... a far cry from the usual “parking lot” autocross venue. The Grand Harbor Country Club will cater lunch and soft drinks. Course workers will come from several local organizations, so that drivers can concentrate on driving and enjoying the day rather than “working the course.” The event has the full support of the Indian River County Sheriffs Dept. and they will provide as many deputies as we request, at no charge. Plus, a fire and a rescue team.

Run classes will include all PCA classes, partial SCCA classes, and 2-4 historic vehicle classes. Trophies will be “50s style loving cups.” First place class winners to get their names engraved on plates and sent out later. “Fastest time of day” will include a special trophy AND, a Golf Weekend, for two.

There will be pre-registration online at www.clubregistration.net find Florida Citrus, go to Vero Beach Grand Prix. ALL checks written at the event, to the Pelican Island Audubon Society, a federally approved charity.

Up to 80 drivers to be pre-registered at $95 each (a 100% tax deductible donation!).

There is a beautiful Marriott SpringHill Suites Hotel, within walking distance (with special event rates, regular $190., event rate $129., all suites for up to four) plus, a Shell station and CVS, just a 100 yards from the venue. (See link below re SpringHill.)

A superb “first time” road course venue, no course work required of drivers, a legitimate tax deductible donation entry fee, plus, a delightful Marriott SpringHill suites steps from the venue will help guarantee the enjoyment and success of this event.

A 904 belonging to Wayne Sandlin, event chairman sits on the course.

Event master will be Stan Pearlman, who probably holds the Gold Coast record for most AutoXs entered and won.

CryoDetailing gets into the hardest to reach places, places that other clean-ing methods cannot touch. Great for restorations, concourse or daily driven vehicles! Any vehicle make or model can be treated!

Over the years, your vehicle collects hidden oils, road debris, salts, and other contaminents that can slowly destroy your vehicle’s undercarriage and add unnecessary weight. Our CryoDetail process eliminates all of these hidden debris and leaves you with a new, “assembly line” finish.

• environmentally friendly

• no residues remain

• removes all contaminents

• no hazardous waste

• removes corrosive salts

• removes cosmoline & adhesives

•• safe and non-toxic

• no water, no sand, just ice

• 1 day turn-around

The Christmas tree and all the festive Holiday decorations on the showroom set a cheerful holiday setting. The beautiful Porsches on display were all topped with beautiful red bows and the cheese and wine was superb. Door prizes were donated by Braman Porsche and the lucky winners were Kent Monroe who won a Porsche luggage and Roger Fabel won a Porsche race track set. On behalf of all our members at Gold Coast Region PCA a gracious thank you to Dan Diamond general manager of Braman Porsche of the Palm Beaches and Emily Santiago (client advisor) for their generous contributions.

Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

Tech Corner: Your Engine’s Guardian

Worrying about catastrophic engine failure in your Porsche may keep you up at night. If it does, then you need to read on. Reading this article will do much more to cure your insomnia than taking a bunch of “Lunesta” sleep-aid pills.

If you Google “Porsche engine failure” you will get over 1,000,000 results. Most of

them having something to do with the IMS (Inter-Mediate Shaft) Bearing. As most of you are aware, the factory bearing on the end of the IMS on all 1997- 2008 Boxsters, all 1999 - 2008 Carreras and all 2006 - 2008 Caymans can be prone to failure on a small percentage of those cars. If it fails, the most likely outcome is catastrophic engine failure. Translation: It’ll cost you a bunch of money. A new engine, just the engine, can run you $18,000. Installation labor and other ancillary parts such as clutch, RMS, etc. can bring the total to well over $20,000. Even if you can find a decent used engine, your total cost could still be over $7,000 - $8,000.

Installing an aftermarket ceramic IMS bearing as a preemptive measure is a solution, but that can run you over $4,500 when all is said and done. You’ll have to drop the transmission and remove the clutch and the flywheel. Most likely, the clutch should be replaced, also as a preemptive measure.

Here’s the good news! There’s a new product on the market called the IMS Guardian that can bring you peace of mind.Installing the IMS Guardian doesn’t cure a potential IMS failure, but it will alert you if the IMS bearing starts to fail with enough time to allow you to safely get to where you’re going, stop the engine and consider your options.

The IMS Guardian was developed specifically for the M96/M97 Porsche engines found in the aforementioned models. It uses technology borrowed from military and commercial helicopters which use similar sensors to detect ferrous metal (chip) particles in the engine’s and/or transmission’s oil. These sensors are commonly known as MCD (Magnetic Chip Detector) or just as “chip detectors”.

Ferrous metal chips in the engine’s oil is a sure sign that excessive internal engine wear is happening, generally in a bearing such as the IMS Bearing. When an engine bearing starts to deteriorate, small chips of ferrous metal from it’s races start to be shed into the engine oil. These chips gradually increase in size and amount as the bearing further deteriorates until the bearing can’t mechanically sustain itself and completely fails. When this type of failure occurs the immediate result is catastrophic engine failure because the IMS determines the engine’s timing. When it fails, pistons clash with valves and all hell breaks loose inside the engine causing irreparable damage.

The IMS Guardian’s primary component is its MCD sensor which contains two powerful but opposite-pole permanent magnets set with a very specific insulated air gap between them. Each magnet is connected to an electric lead which sends a signal to the processor when it detects chips thus generating a visual and audible alert.

These magnets are permanently set into a new oil drain plug, so they are positioned in the optimum location to attract any ferrous chips collected by the oil. When the metal buildup on the magnets is enough to bridge the air gap it is like closing a switch which sets off the alarm.

32 Die Porsche Kassette | January 2012

Page 33: January 2012 Kassette

Inside the cabin all you see is an unmarked factory lighted switch which replaces one of the blanks in the dash. When all is well, the switch has a constant amber light. If the sensors trigger the alarm, the amber light turns red and a loud buzzer which sits behind the dash will also be activated. The switch has also a built-in test circuit which allows you to manually test the system and make sure everything is working fine.

The IMS Guardian comes as a complete Kit that even includes a DVD with step-by-step installation instructions. For mechanically-minded people, it’s a DIY project. For the not-so-mechanically inclined, an independent Porsche Shop will be happy to install it for you. Installation should take about 2.5 hours and it is generally done during a scheduled oil change.

Even though I had already upgraded my car’s IMS bearing with the new ceramic bearing when I refreshed my engine at 203,000 miles, I installed one of the first IMS Guardians as well. The IMS bearing is not the only bearing that can fail in the M96/M97 engines and since I take my car to AXs and DEs on a regular basis,

I’d like as much warning as possible if one of those bearings were to fail. The cost of this new device is just under $400.00. I’m sleeping very well, thank you ;) To find out more about the IMS Guardian, please visit my website at: www.PedrosGarage.com.Happy Porsche-ing, Pedro
