January 2011
AS A NEW YEAR BEGINS We have a problem as we usher in a new year. The problem is January. It’s not easy to thank God for January. The problem with January is what it brings with it: ice and snow, shivering animals, wind chills that sting your face. Chapped hands, cracked fingers, runny noses, cold feet. The snow blower doesn’t work, the car won’t start, the parking lot’s slippery. January! I much prefer May. Winter gone, temperature rising, shovels put away. Yet still, I’ll thank God for January. For the life it brings, for new opportunities, new starts. I’ll thank God for January. For the warmth of friends, the love of family, the community of believers I’ll thank God for January For the secrets it holds the gifts it brings For God being there, always, on cold days, in icy struggles, along windblown paths . For strength given, direction shown, hope offered. As a New year begins I’ll thank God for January For the joys it brings, the challenges I’ll face, the love I can give, the lives I can touch. Thank you God, for January!

Have You Noticed the Have You Noticed the Have You Noticed the Have You Noticed the New Fence Around the Dumpsters?New Fence Around the Dumpsters?New Fence Around the Dumpsters?New Fence Around the Dumpsters? Thanks to the generosity of a member of our congregation, we have a new fence around the dumpsters at the edge of our parking lot. Chloe Singer noticed that the old fence was in need of repair, and she decided to provide the fund-ing necessary to replace it. She did this to honor the mem-ory of her late husband, Joe, who for many years spent a lot of time working to keep the buildings and property of Grace looking good and working properly. I hear Joe was, on occasion, overly enthusiastic about what (or whom) he watered, but you will have to ask Pastor about that story.
Many thanks to you, Chloe, and God bless!

needed to help take down Christmas decorations on Satur-day, January 8th, 8:30 a.m. As we so enjoyed having all the decorations up, please help us take the items down. Many hands will help make the task go faster. Thank you.

A Word from A Word from A Word from A Word from the Terrific Twos . . the Terrific Twos . . the Terrific Twos . . the Terrific Twos . . . . . . Happy 2011! We enjoyed our two weeks of Christmas break, but are happy to back with our
"terrific" two-year-olds! January for us means having the "Twos Grocery Store" and McDonalds stand set up in our room. The kids love it! Our theme for the month is snow, winter and the grocery store; the color is white; and the shape is a triangle. We will have fun using eye droppers and colored water on small blocks of ice. Learning how to use the eye droppers is great for the children's small motor skills.
January also means registration for the 2011-2012 school year. Terrific Twos registration for children who will be two by September 1st, 2011, will begin Tuesday, January 25th for Grace members and siblings of current and for-mer Terrific Twos students. Open registration for everyone else will begin February 1st. For addi-tional information about our program, please feel free to call me at 847-816-3810.
Wishing you a happy and healthy 2011! Beth Zupkus Terrific Twos Director
A Word fromA Word fromA Word fromA Word from the Tremendous Threes the Tremendous Threes the Tremendous Threes the Tremendous Threes December was festive & fun! We learned the story of Baby Jesus & had a birthday party for him too. We hope you noticed the manger scenes created with the children's hands on the bulletin board. The children were excited to make & give a special Christmas gift to their family. We read "Gingerbread Baby" and "Gingerbread Friends" and decorated our own gingerbread houses. We read "The Mitten" an-other book by Jan Brett (author of the month) and decorated & laced our own felt mitten. The children were proud of the "Christmas Book of Shapes" they created.
Giving/generosity was the virtue this month for both groups and thank you to all of the students that donated toiletries for the local PADS shel-ter. Also, thanks to Mr. Jeff & Mrs. Phyllis for leading our Chapel session in December.
A Word from the Fabulous Fours . . A Word from the Fabulous Fours . . A Word from the Fabulous Fours . . A Word from the Fabulous Fours . . The Fours spent the majority of December con-tinuing their journey into various cultures of the world. We traveled to Asia and played domi-noes, made Chinese lanterns, decorated paper fans, and played with rice in the sensory ta-ble. We cooked rice and ate it with chopsticks and sipped tea. Next we traveled to Mexico. It was messy but exciting to make our own pi-nata. The kids broke it open at our fiesta and found surprises. It was fun to paint maracas and learn the Mexican Hat Dance. We made poin-settias and luminaries too. Our journey ended in the United States and we learned about the Christmas story. The children also worked hard to make a surprise gift for their families. We concluded the month by signing Happy Birthday to Baby Jesus. Wishing you a joyful and healthy New year!
