ENGAGE! – A great way to get connected

This is my motto as I step into the first month as President of the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce. Engage is one of the 4 E’s of the St. Lawrence Parks Commission where I reside as the Sales and New Business Development Consultant. I work with an amazing group of professionals that make Fort Henry a relevant destination in the tourism market.

As the new President for the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce, it’s my goal to encourage us to be ENGAGED as members. The Chamber network really is a powerful tool and we have the proof to back this up. Face to face communication and personal involvement remains the most important method of ensuring membership works for you, whether it be through committee participation, special events, Chamber breakfasts, seminars or open houses. However, it’s essential that we understand how to dip into the Facebook, Twitter and other social network pools. How do we approach it from an association point of view so it is actually relevant and powerful? At Fort Henry, we have begun to see the effects of using Social Media to attract new visitors. Now, it’s my job to help the Chamber move in the same direction.

Social media has enveloped us professionally and personally, particularly among our approximate 900 members. It’s ‘virtually’ impossible not to be influenced by it at some point. The Chamber launched our new website in 2010 and will kick off the New Year by launching three additional features; facebook, twitter and QR code accounts! With the click of a button or snap of your smart phone, you’ll become better connected to the Chamber via these new media options.

Once “connected,” you’ll discover that 2011 will be a busy year. Significant breakfast speakers like Sydneyeve Matrix will return, the Chamber AGM is in March and look for more euchre tournaments, golf outings and our inaugural “speed networking” mixer in April. Hands on workshops will keep you moving in the right direction with additional seminars presented by Rogers Wireless Express and Primer Business Solutions.

So here’s to the very best in the New Year with an update, tweet, wink and a post from the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce.

A New Year’s Resolution You Won’t Want to Break.

Submitted by David Phillips, Membership/Marketing Representative at the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce

Now that we have entered a new year, you may be planning your marketing strategy for what promises to be an interesting year for businesses. As membership sales representative for your Chamber, may I make a suggestion to all members that I make to new members? During the year, your Chamber of Commerce has numerous networking events such as breakfasts, business mixers, curling, golf, AGM, etc. These are all events that your Chamber organizes for you to do one thing – allow members to network with one another to gain business.

So, what is my suggestion? Every year you will spend many, many hours trying to get new business. Why not plan now to use some of those hours networking? The Chamber breakfasts are held the second Tuesdays of the month (listed under Events on our website). You will usually spend about 1-1/2 hours which means a total of 10-1/2 hours out of your year to meet dozens of prospective new clients. Not a lot of time to obtain potential new business.

Add to that our seven business mixers held the third Thursday of the month which, if you attend all, would add another 14 hours of your business year to meet, literally, hundreds of prospective clients. You cannot buy this amount of contact and it will take you weeks/months of cold calling to meet/talk to the same number of people.

If you like to have more fun while trying to get new business, consider taking part in our educational workshops; curling; golf; euchre; speed networking, gala, etc. events.

Do these work? As one who spent 10 years volunteering for, and attending, Chamber events for my former employer – I KNOW they work. I would be happy to discuss these with you.

In addition, sponsorships/exhibit space is available for most of these programs which adds another way to promote your business. Contact Dana Betournay or myself for information on sponsorships. 613.548.4453

Canadian Chamber: Strengthening Our Ties: Four Steps Toward a More Successful Canada-U.S. Partnership Background Canada and the United States (U.S.) have long enjoyed one of the world‘s most prosperous trading relationships. Millions of jobs on both sides of the border depend on the hundreds of billions of dollars in bilateral trade. Each year there are over 200 million individual border crossings between the two countries. The relationship goes beyond economic integration to include family ties, language, shared values, a singular environment and common interests abroad. There is no doubt that Canada and the U.S. are close friends and excellent allies. Canadians benefit from this relationship, with half of our wealth being derived from our trade and investment with the U.S. Unfortunately, the Canada-U.S. relationship has drifted in recent years. The border has become so ineffective that industries are shifting from ―just-in-time to just-in–case business models. Unnecessary regulatory barriers hinder the competitiveness of our economies. Trade disputes in a variety of sectors, including agriculture, natural resources and intellectual property have caused increasing friction.ii To make matters worse, the Buy American policy called into question the market access on which investments have been confidently made for over 20 years. It is time to give greater attention to a relationship that is vital to the health of both of our economies. Position It is time for Canada to present the United States with new goals, new ideas and new areas for a partnership that will not only secure the future of both economies and create jobs but will launch the relationship in a new, more prosperous direction. Key messages In Strengthening Our Ties: Four Steps Toward a More Successful Canada-U.S. Partnership, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce outlines four areas—trade, regulatory cooperation, border efficiency, and energy security and the environment—where notable progress has the potential to usher in the next

generation of economic growth and prosperity between our two countries. Canada must work with the U.S. to eliminate unnecessary barriers to trade and investment. Neither Canada nor the U.S. can afford to allow minor irritants to disrupt overall economic and trade relations. We need to resolve both U.S. protectionist impulses and the costs associated with an inefficient border. Both governments, in partnership with industry, must identify areas where regulatory cooperation would be mutually beneficial. Both governments need to focus on the removal of inefficiencies and redundancies as well as the elimination of unnecessary regulatory barriers in key sectors. A new, more modern and effective border policy is needed. This involves reclassifying the border as a process and not a place. Improving the functionality of the border would have three outcomes. First, it would make North Americans more secure by increasing participation in trusted traveller and trusted trader programs. Doing so will allow border agencies to focus their limited resources on areas where they are needed most. Second, it would improve the predictability of the border in terms of wait times, inspections, fees, service commitments and standards. Third, better management of border, particularly in terms of joint infrastructure investment would facilitate the movement of legitimate people and goods. Canada and the United States must coordinate environmental policies and regulations to create progress while minimizing the costs to businesses and the environment. Both governments should continue their work through the Clean Energy Dialogue, particularly by developing compatible and predictable regulatory policies and by promoting technology to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. What this means for Canadian business

Healthy Canada-U.S. relations are vital to Canada‘s prosperity. The U.S. is our largest trading partner and our closest ally. Our systems are so integrated that we literally build things together. The free flow of goods and people across the border is essential to the competitiveness of Canadian businesses and is the source of three million Canadian jobs.

For the past 10 years The Business Performance Practice (The Practice) has been working with organizations to develop ―performance teams‖. These teams feature a rich understanding of thinking preferences which they use to: improve communication and processes, leverage current resources and maximize both productivity and creativity.

―An understanding of thinking preferences provides an instant starting point for creating synergies and fostering effective long-term relationships‖ says Rob Fonger, owner of The Practice. ―Our team building process results in the rapid establishment of groups that are equipped with a unique framework for the building, enrichment, and ongoing management of performance teams.‖

―At Skebo & Associates we have used thinking preferences in the delivery of our Fast Track Business Skills courses for the last 10 years,‖ says Peter Skebo. ―It provides a ‘jump start‘ to building relationships and offers a powerful, approach to understanding and managing key business issues.‖

The Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI) is used extensively by The Practice in the development and delivery of its services. Whole Brain® Thinking workshops are planned for the early New Year focused on creative thinking, problem solving, decision making and customer service.
