Denton’s indie-folk it girl, Sarah Jaffe, isn’t cooling

her jets in 2012. Kirtland Records announced that

the city’s acoustic sweetheart is already preparing

to hit the road, performing next month on Cayamo, a

seven-day cruise that departs from Miami with the likes of

Lucinda Williams, the Civil Wars and Rhett Miller. In

March, Jaffe will tour the West Coast opening for Guthrie

— a tribute to Woody Guthrie with songwriters Will

Johnson of Denton’s Centro-matic, Yim Yames of My

Morning Jacket, Jay Farrar, best known for Son Volt and

Uncle Tupelo, and Anders Parker of Varnaline. (The tour

falls during 35 Denton, and Jaffe isn’t among the local

bands listed for this year’s fest.)

Director Bradley Speck knows the latest DentonCommunity Theatre show is a downer, but he said he’scounting on the music and the barbed humor to give thebiographical Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill thebuoyancy it needs to keep from sinking.

“When I read the script, I loved it,” Speck said. “It’s areconstruction of one of her final performances.”

The year is 1959. The place is Emerson’s Bar & Grill inSouth Philly.

Billie Holiday — also known to her fans as “Lady Day”— is fresh out of jail for drug possession. Her performancecard has been revoked because of her arrest and jail time.

She’s in the spotlight, anyway. Both her ghosts and demonsare just beyond the light at this illegal concert, and they’d likenothing better than for her voice to crack.

The show is a three-date engage-ment at the company’s latest venue, the PointBank Black Box Perform-ing Arts Center. Speck said the showis an intimate look at a huge talentwho died at 44 of cirrhosis of theliver. It calls for an intimate setting.

“We’re turning the black box intoa club,” he said. “We’ll have a bar, some tables and some seats set upon risers.”

Speck cast additional performersto act as the bartender and bar-maids, but the show is in the handsof Sherna Armstrong in the titlerole and University of North Texasstudent Don Roberson as JimmyPowers, the piano man who alsotends to Lady Day as a caretaker.

Armstrong carries most of theshow, singing a greatest-hits menuof Holiday songs (some of them, like the barn-burner “Gimme aPig’s Foot,” are borrowed fromBessie Smith and other belles ofjazz and blues).

“I’m concerned about whether Isound like her, look like her andmove like her. You know? I’m con-cerned about whether I’m saying itthe way Billie said it. Being that I’man African-American woman, Ihave an advantage. But there’s stillthat concern,” Armstrong said. “Ihave always loved Billie. She is anicon. She is the queen of the blues-jazz style.”

Armstrong isn’t trying for anyrote imitation. She’s channeling thelilting belt of Holiday’s better days, and yoking it to a weary, done-inmanner of Holiday’s decliningyears. Armstrong tries for joy in theeternally hopeful “What a LittleMoonlight Can Do” and tries not tobreak during the macabre “StrangeFruit,” a grotesque song pictureabout black men lynched onpoplars and magnolia boughs.

“I think she is someone who haslearned to live with very few tri-umphs,” Armstrong said. “And sheturns her sorrow into joking aboutit, laughing at it, almost to insanity. She talks about waking up to findher grandmother dead. She wassleeping with her grandmother, and she says that waking up in thearms of her dead grandmotherwasn’t the worst thing that hap-pened to her.”

Roberson, a stealth player whoimprovises at the keyboard in a waythat makes raging ragtime riffs easeinto bluesy jazz, said he auditionedsimply because of the qualificationsSpeck listed in the notice.

“The audition notice said youmust be a jazz pianist and beAfrican-American,” he said. “Thatnarrows things down a lot. That’sslim pickings around here.”

Roberson said he had neverplayed Billie Holiday songs before.

“I was used to hearing her singthese songs,” he said. “I’m a pianoempowerment person, and nowthat I’ve played this music, I’mgoing to use some of this music forauditions. It’s good stuff.”

Armstrong and Roberson said theshow requires that pianist andsinger have a very close workingrelationship. He watches Armstrongclosely from behind the uprightpiano.

“One thing that has reallyamazed me about Sherna is thatwhen she starts a song a cappella, and then the piano comes in, sheknows exactly what the note is,”said Theresa Ferrell, an actingcoach for the production.

Armstrong joked that she’s ahappy inheritor of perfect pitchbefore confessing that Ferrell’s beenkind of tricked by the chemistrybetween singer and accompanist.

“What you’re hearing there is herstarting the song, and me graduallyguiding her to the note where she’ssupposed to be. Yeah, I guess youcould say I’m transcribing the songin the moment a little,” Robersonsaid.

The two musicians said they dida lot of talking while they carpooledfrom Dallas to rehearsals. Thehour-long discussions helped themlay ground rules and work onglitches.

Speck said he knows the show ishefty; It’s a sad journey throughHoliday’s personal defeats, and herbrief salvation through music. Butit’s also a look back to the South’s fallfrom grace, when segregation forcedmany a young black woman intoprostitution and stamped out thedreams of many a young black man.

Holiday recalls having to eat inthe kitchens of the white clubs thatearned a lot of money off of herwhile white diners got VIP treat-ment in the dining room.

“This isn’t any easy show, no,”Speck said at the end of a Friday-night rehearsal. “She had a veryrough life, but she gave so much inspite of that. She’s an icon.”

Oskar Schell

in a scene

from

Extremely

Loud and

Incredibly

Close.

Warner Bros.Pictures

By Boo AllenFilm Critic

Movies, as well as people, have built-inembargoes. The shameless new tearjerkerExtremely Loud and Incredibly Close testscertain limits for both people and movies.

Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, movieshave stepped lightly around the subject, witha few of the efforts stumbling embarrassing-ly (anyone remember Remember Me?), whilepeople who suffered through the same eventin real life struggled with the longevity oftheir grief. Extremely Loud handles bothsubjects clumsily.

The film is based on Jonathan Safran Foer’snovel and directed by Stephen Daldry, withscreenplay by Eric Roth. The film goes all out, putting a suffering 9-year-old child up fortheir main character and then letting himpush buttons guaranteed to send manysearching for hankies.

If grief is worse and more magnified in achild, Daldry never relents, constantly push-ing the face of Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn)into every possible situation to stretch out theemotional trauma.

When first seen, Oskar and his fatherThomas (Tom Hanks) play freely, enjoyingeach other’s company with love and withoutcare. Oskar spends a year in suspension afterhis dad dies in the one of the towers — oneof the first tropes to be manipulated foreffect. He then discovers his life’s purpose, and the film’s main narrative, when he findsan unidentified key his father left behind.

Oskar uses the tracking and detective

skills he learned with his father and traipsesaround New York’s five boroughs to find outwhat the key unlocks.

In between Oskar’s ramblings, he deliversa surplus of nauseating narration, an oftenperky monologue that sounds like it camestraight from an adult novelist or screen-writer, instead of a precocious child. Andbefore long, regardless of his grief and thesituation, Oskar’s fits, tantrums and belliger-ence make him more annoying than themain character in a film should be.

Yes, he grieves the loss of his father, butOskar still displays too many adult traits ofpushiness, arrogance and smugness. Andyes, Oskar can still miss his father terribly, but must he make everyone suffer for it, andfor how long?

For his part, Thomas Horn is asked tocarry the film, but the film’s faults cannot beattributed to him. In a throwaway role,Sandra Bullock plays Oskar’s mom Linda, while fine actors Jeffrey Wright and ViolaDavis have too little screen time as a couplewho connect with Oskar.

And, finally, great Swedish actor Max VonSydow shines in his thankless role as themysterious “renter,” a possible relative whoremains silent the entire movie. Othersshould have followed his example.

Hugo () Martin Scorsese

uncharacteristically directs an ele-

giac, moving 3-D film about Hugo

(Asa Butterfield), a boy hiding and

living in a Paris train station around

1930. He befriends a toy store owner

(Ben Kingsley) who turns out to be

George Melies, a forgotten silent film

pioneer. Various other subplots from

Brian Selznick’s novel play out with

an excellent cast, and are compli-

mented by stunning special effects

in which 3-D is, for once, appropriate

and put to positive use. Rated PG,

126 minutes. — B.A.

The Iron Lady (1/2) Meryl Streep

makes another celebrated appear-

ance, this time as a senior Margaret

Thatcher. In her unstable mental

state, the elderly Thatcher replays

the high and low points of her pro-

fessional and private life. Strange

movie which flits back and forth with

little defined viewpoint, making it

somewhat mushy. Jim Broadbent

plays husband Denis Thatcher, and

Streep is, as expected, uncanny, not

in her performance but in her imita-

tion. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. At

the Magnolia in Dallas. — B.A.

Joyful Noise () If some incarna-

tion of Glee were to be developed for

the Christian Broadcasting Network,

it would probably look a lot like this.

It’s not really effective as entertain-

ment, especially during the musical

numbers — which theoretically

should serve as the most rousing

source of emotion, since the film is

about a gospel choir — when instead

there’s a weird disconnect, a sense

that the songs are simultaneously

overproduced and hollow, and

repeated cutaways to reaction shots

of singers nodding and smiling fur-

ther undermine their cohesion.

Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton co-

star as longtime enemies battling for

control over a small-town Georgia

church choir. Keke Palmer and

Jeremy Jordan play teens sharing a

forbidden love ... through song. Rated

PG-13, 118 minutes. — The

Associated Press

Mission Impossible: GhostProtocol (1/2) The Impossible

Mission Force (Tom Cruise, Paula

Patton, Jeremy Renner and Simon

Pegg) finds itself abandoned just as

they need to break into the Kremlin

and, later, to scale the world’s tallest

building in Dubai. This latest

Impossible entry delivers on con-

stant action and white-knuckle

sequences, all ably rendered by ani-

mation director Brad Bird (The

Incredibles), who makes an impres-

sive first effort with humans. See it

in Imax for maximum effect. Rated

PG-13, 133 minutes. — B.A.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game ofShadows () Robert Downey Jr.

and Jude Law bicker and banter and

bob and weave with diminishing

returns in this sequel to the 2009

smash hit Sherlock Holmes. Director

Guy Ritchie once again applies his

revisionist approach to Arthur Conan

Doyle’s classic literary character,

infusing the film with his trademark,

hyperkinetic aesthetic and turning

the renowned detective into a wise-

cracking butt-kicker. Here, Downey’s

Holmes faces off against brilliant

supervillain Professor Moriarty (Jared

Harris), who’s cooked up a scheme to

pit European nations against each

other in hopes of benefiting from the

demand for arms. Noomi Rapace

tags along for some reason as a

gypsy fortuneteller looking for her

missing brother. Rated PG-13, 129

minutes. — AP

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy ()

Gary Oldman stars as spy novelist

John le Carre’s British secret opera-

tive George Smiley. In the 1970s,

someone seems to be a double agent

for Russia and Smiley returns from

recent retirement to find him out.

Slow but methodical. Frequent jumps

in time, scene and character make

this a challenging yet rewarding

experience. Rated R, 127 minutes. —

B.A.

War Horse () Steven Spielberg’s

glossy rendition of a London play

about a magnificent horse bought by

a poor English farmer (Peter Mullan).

The horse is raised lovingly by his

son Albert (Jeremy Irvine) before

they are both recruited for duty in

World War I. The story travels

through consecutive episodes with

different owners and protectors of

the horse, all the while being tracked

by Albert. Overly maudlin yet hand-

some film never rises above the

mundane. Rated PG-13, 146 minutes.

— B.A.

We Bought a Zoo () The father

(Matt Damon) of a troubled family

buys a troubled Los Angeles zoo.

Together the zoo and family formu-

laically recover. And, of course, dad

has a romance with one of the zoo

workers (Scarlett Johansson). Sappy,

imminently forgettable yet family-

friendly film from underachieving

director Cameron Crowe. Well pho-

tographed by Rodrigo Prieto. Rated

PG, 124 minutes. — B.A.

Operatic mash-up

Luca Pisaroni sings the role of Caliban in The Enchanted Island, a world premiere opera

that combines baroque-era music with an all-new, English-language story. The score

combines selections from more than 30 operas, cantatas and oratorios by Handel,

Vivaldi, Rameau and other masters of the baroque period. The story, by the English theater

artist Jeremy Sams, mashes up two of Shakespeare’s best-known plays. The four young

lovers from A Midsummer Night’s Dream find themselves shipwrecked on Prospero’s island

from The Tempest, leading to a tortuous web of comic and dramatic romantic entangle-

ments. The cast includes Joyce DiDonato as Sycorax, David Daniels as Prospero and Danielle

de Niese as Ariel. The live broadcast is scheduled to air at 11:55 a.m. Saturday at the

Cinemark Denton, 2825 Wind River Lane.
