A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

Jesus’ question in today’s gospel is still valid today: “What are you looking for?” What do you want from your spouse, children or parents? Families are populated with imperfect people. To expect perfection is unreal. To expect and accept imperfection is wisdom.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 18, 2015

“John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by he said: ‘Behold the Lamb of God.’ The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them ‘What are you looking for?’ They said to him, ‘Rabbi…where are you staying?’ He said to them, ‘Come, and you will see.’

Did you notice that John’s comment caused the disciples to leave him and begin their journey with Jesus? Did you notice that the response of Jesus caused Andrew to follow Him and then go and search out his brother Simon. Did you notice that at his meeting with Jesus change took place, a change of name and heart? There are several accounts of the meeting of the apostles with Jesus, and His invitation to stay with Him, become His disciple and eventually accept the role of ‘fishers’ of other people. All seem to reflect a meeting of curious yet seeking people. Each seems to be based on words of other people, as John or Andrew. Each results with a change of heart and discipleship. Our Sunday gathering is no different. We come looking, and as Jesus asks us ‘what for’ we might answer differently. My family, forgiveness, peace, or even ‘what you want me to do.’ Join with the first disciples of Jesus and seriously consider the many needs that beset us, and the many ways the Lord wants us to respond to His needs. This week reflect on the words” ‘Come and you will see.’

Page 4: January 18 2015

Today’s Gospel tells us that people wanted to follow Jesus because they had heard how special He was. John the Baptist was the first person to tell others about Jesus and the first disciples wanted to follow Him, too. The more we learn about Jesus, the more we want to follow Him. That is why we pray, attend Mass and learn about Jesus in Faith Formation classes. To be a follower of Jesus is to be part of a community of believers. Today we call that community the Church. Like the disciples, we first learn about Jesus from others. We get to know Jesus by developing a relationship with Him through prayer, celebrating the Sacraments and deciding to follow in His footsteps - sharing God’s Love & Mercy with all!
