LAS VEGAS Englands
Dom Barrett became the sec-
ond international player ever
to win the PBA World
Championship when he held
off reigning PBA Player of the
Year Sean Rash of
Montgomery, Ill., 238-235, in
the title match at the South
Point Hotel and Casino com-
plex.
The 55th World Championship,
which aired on ESPN, was the
fifth and final PBA Tour champi-
onship event held as part of PBA
World Series of Bowling V.
Right now I couldnt be
happier, Barrett said after
joining Finlands Osku Palermaa, the 2011 World
Champion, as the second international player to
win the event. Its a very special feeling, one you
dont often get in bowling, so Im going to make
the most of it.
Barrett, the leading qualifier over 52 games of
qualifying and match play, locked up his third PBA
Tour title with three strikes in the 10th frame,
although he prematurely began to celebrate after
his second strike, thinking that shot had clinched
the victory.I tried to stay calm all week, not get ahead of
myself, trying to keep my heart rate the same and
my emotions in check, the 28-year-old British star
said of his emotional outburst. I know some
Americans come across as a bit brash, but I con-
sciously try not to do that. I try to stay very much
in the moment, but I guess that was two weeks
worth of joy and excitement
coming out.
I couldnt see the score-
board from where I sat. I
thought I had enough, but
my corner man said I needed
some more, so I got myself
composed again. I knew I
had count in my favor, so it
was a matter of hitting the
pocket one more time.
Needing eight pins on his
final ball to shut out Rash,
Barrett threw another strike.
Barrett, who lost to Ryan
Ciminelli of Cheektowaga,
N.Y., in the title match of the
Chameleon Championship
earlier in the World Series, and failed to advance to
the television finals in the 2012 World
Championship after leading the tournament going
into the final round of match play, said he put those
disappointments to good use.
I was pretty disappointed in the Chameleon, but
I really didnt have a chance because (Ciminelli)
bowled so well, Barrett said. You always learn
more from your failures than your successes, but
its still important to have success. If you go around
losing all the time, youre not going to want to dothis much longer.
Last years World Championship really hurt,
too. The pain makes you go home, knuckle down a
little more, try a little bit harder, and bowl for days
like today.

The Emma P. Hendrickson Annual Adult/Youth Championship Rolloff
will be held Sunday, February 2 (with Sunday, February 9 as an alternate
date in the event of weather issues) at Plaza Lanes, Madison. Bowling
centers in the Morris County Association that have sanctioned youth
leagues are holding their qualifiers this month. If you have any ques-
tions, call Elaine Wilson, Tournament Chairperson at 973-267-4279.
Idle bowling thoughts......
One of the greatest entertain-
ment shows of all time, hailed
around theworld featured the
three tenors, opera legends Jose
Carreras, Placido Domingo and
Luciano Pavarotti. In a TV inter-
view Domingo explained that you
need a certain kind of breathing to
reach the high notes, and when
Pavorotti was singing Domingo
and Carreras would sort of
breathe with him to help him
along. It was like when you arebowling, and you are behind the
bowler, and you move from side to
side to help the bowler steer the
ball.
What happens when one
bowler sticks on a lane and com-
plains, and another bowler says he
slides too much on the same lane
and complains? A United Nations
like debate ensues and the centers,
league and bowling officials
wished they had stayed home that
night.
Your bowling troubles aren't as
bad as they seem. They couldn't be.
Pure fiction is the story of ahead to head bowling match---as
told by the participants two weeks
later.
Like it or not, we learn by
looking, copying and repeating,
and we naturally imitate winners,
not losers. Almost every successful
person you meet uses something
from role models with track
records of success of some kind.
That's true of bowling too. Top
pros, male and female, and top
amateurs must realize that they
are heroes to others, young and
old, whether the stars like it or not.
Needling and baiting can befun, interesting and even produc-
tive at times. That's fine, as long as
you can take it as well as you give it.
In the rush for entries som
senior tournaments are lowerin
the minimum age to 45 or lowe
from the usual 50. There ar
super senior divisions for bowle
60 and over and super super div
sions for 70 and up. Is bowlin
going to get like boxing? Boxin
once had eight divisions---perio
Now there are junior and supe
groupings added to the origina
making 24. And there are at lea
three sanctioning groups an
that's why there are so many bo
ing champions, 72 and countin
as other newly created weigh
divisions and boxing association
pop up. In bowling, in mo
cases, youngsters and oldster
what counts is average, not age.
Whenever a so-calle
unknown wins a bowling even
just remember that many
nobody who isn't known by an
body becomes a somebody and
known by everybody, and ever
body tells him they knew hi
when he was a nobody and the
knew he would be a somebod
someday. Huh?
In the more than 40 yea
pro bowling has been on TV, th
event that caused the most com
ment and excitement and got th
most exposure was not a specif
thrilling match or perfect gam
or a big money purse---it wa
Mark Roth's conversion of the 7
10 split.
All bowlers have their ba
outings. It has been said th
those bad times will be matche
by an equal number of goo
times. Most bowlers I know hav
a lot of good days coming. In thmeantime have a good bowlin
day---or at least a good day-
every day.

was referring to, so he didnt fault Barrett for his emotiona
display.Dom made some great shots toward the end, Rash said. H

he got a little excited.
He bowled good, I bowled good, said Rash, who finished the matc
with six strikes, but couldnt overcome a missed 6-10 spare conversio
in the third frame over an otherwise error-free game. It could have gon

Toby Santoro, a sanctioned bowler with the Essex
County USBCBA reached a milestone this when he
recently turned 100 years of age.
Born October 9, 1913, he is still going strong whilebowling in one league and subbing whenever called
upon. He was feted at the Hanover Manor, East
Hanover, NJ at a gathering of 150 attendees, including
relatives, friends, and many old and new bowling
friends.
Toby began bowling socially in 1937 before becom-
ing a sanctioned bowler in 1950. His average for the
first 20 years was in the high 160s, with the high being
179. He had several 600 series bowled as well as a high
game of 256. From 1970 to date, Toby has been in the
middle 160s. At 95 years of age, he attained a clean
series (no opens) of 625.
Toby has been a loyal participant of 63 years in the
leagues of Essex County. His participation has includ-
ed his willingness to substitute, whenever called upon.
He is also an active participant in the Essex County
John Val Senior Tournaments where he has cashed.
Statewide this year, he bowled in the Woodbridge
Senior Olympics, where he took down three gold
medals, one in bowling, one in bocce, and one in
miniature golf. With his victories, he is eligible to bowl
in the national senior Olympics this year. Still going
