    of 757.

LAS VEGAS Michael HaugenJr. of Phoenix survived a 10th-

frame mental error to win his

    fourth Professional Bowlers

Association Tour title in the PBA

    Scorpion Championship at the

    new South Point Bowling Plaza,

and minutes after his 213-206 vic-

    tory over Swedens Martin

Larsen, he got the girl of his

    dreams.

    The Scorpion finals, the fourth

of five PBA Tour title events con-

    ducted during GEICO PBA

    World Series of Bowling VI,

    aired last week on ESPN.

    In edging Larsen, Haugen, 47,

overcame a self-imposed distrac-tion when he prematurely started

thinking about his plans to propose marriage to

fiance Phuong Truong right after he won. With vic-

tory only a spare or strike away entering the final

frame, the 16-year PBA Tour veteran left the 4-10

split and failed to convert, opening the door for

Larsen. He escaped with the victory when Larsen

left the 4-6-7-9-10 Greek church on his second

    shot in the 10th frame.

I was told I could only (propose on-air) if I won

because you dont want to take anything away from the

tournament winner, so I respected that and I was taking

really good care of things, Haugensaid. But in the ninth frame, I

started thinking about asking her to

marry me rather than I need to

make two more good shots, and

thats all it takes. It was a bonehead

    decision.

    Luckily I was coherent enough

to realize I had to get one pin on

that split (in the 10th frame) to

    force him to double. When

(Larsen) really needed (a strike), he

got a little soft and grabbed on it,

    which is what usually happens

when you get nervous and need

one. Luckily Ive been there before

and he hasnt, and thats one of the

reasons why I made him finishlast.

In the opening three-player shootout, Larsen raced

into the lead with five strikes in the first six frames

while neither Scott Newell of Deland, Florida, and

Tom Hess of Urbandale, Iowa, could put together

consecutive strikes until Newell doubled in the eighth

and ninth frames. Larsens missed 4-9 spare attempt

in his eighth frame closed his lead over Newell to

nine pins, but Larsen finished with four strikes in a

row, advancing to the title match with a 236. Newell

had a 213 and Hess, who finally doubled in the ninth

    and 10th, finished fourth with a 205.

    LAS VEGAS - Danielle

    McEwan of Stony Point, New

    York, and Matthew Farber of

Plainview, New York, got off to

    strong starts in the opening

round of qualifying at the 2015

    United States Bowling Congress

    Team USA Trials.

McEwan easily led thewomen's division with a six-

game total of 1,410 (235 aver-

    age), while Farber topped the

    men's field with 1,482 (247

    average) at The Orleans

    Bowling Center.

The players in the field earn

    points based on their finishing

posit ion in each round. After five

rounds, the top three men and top

    three women with the least

amount of points advance to the

    stepladder finals. McEwan and

Farber each earned one point for

    winning the first round.

Sitting in fourth place with a

game to go, Farber fired a 300game to move into the top spot

for the day. He had games of 211,

    269, 198, 249, 255 and 300 on

    the 43-foot Tokyo pattern.

"It's a great feeling to get off to

a strong start," said Farber, a

member of Junior Team USA in

    2013 and 2014. "There are a ton

of great bowlers out here, so to

be on top af ter the first day is an

    amazing feeling."

    Joshua Tajiri of Anaheim,

California, started the day with a

    299 game and finished second

with 1,466. Junior Team USAmember Michael Tang of San

    Francisco was third with 1,435.

    Robert Gotchall of Clarksville,

    Tennessee, fired the tournament's

first 300 game en route to a 1,415

total, good enough for a fourth-

    place tie with

    Kristopher Prather

    of Milton, Florida.

    On the women's

    side, McEwan put

    up games of 205,

    214, 246, 289, 211

    and 245 en route to

    the lead."Everything came

    together for me

    today," said

    McEwan, a three-

    time Team USA

    member who won

    the Team USA

    Trials in 2012 and

    2013. "I didn't have

a game plan to lead or win the

tournament on the first day, but I

wanted to come out and throw

the ball well. Now I'm in a good

posit ion for the res t of the week."

    Kelly Kulick of Union, New

    Jersey, a 10-time Team USA

member, finished second with1,333, while former Team USA

    member Josie Earnest of

Nashvi lle was third with 1,318.

Take Opening Round at Team USA Trials

    By Lucas Wiseman - USBC

    Matthew Farber and Danielle McEwan

    15-Year-Old Kyle Schellberg

Sparks Youth Travelers with 300By Vince Albrecht

NORTH ARLINGTON, NJ - It was one remarkable weekend for 15-

year-old Dumont sophomore Kyle Schellberg. Saturday at Parkway

Lanes, he won the North Jersey High School Singles Championship and

Sunday in the Stan Niemiec YTL, he achieved perfection in the sport of

bowling-a perfect game, something every bowler, young or old, strives

to achieve at least once in his/her lifetime.

Normally in the leadoff role for Bowler City I, he assumed the role of

anchor this week, leading his squad to a come-from-behind 2885-2783 vic-

tory over Lodi. As he had done the day before, Kyle made some adjustments

after rolling 192-205 and took no prisoners in game three, rifling off atwelve-bagger for the coveted sanctioned 300 perfecto.

His mates put up some fine scores as well-Anthony Rizzo 214, Janina

Santoro 201 and Kristen Kane 187-186. Lodi captured the opener behind a

solid team effort, led by Steve Kropilak 221 followed by 12-year-old Louis

Ferrante 194, Chris Navarro 184 and Nick Ferrante 179.

Although overshadowed by Bowler of the Week Schellberg, Boontons

Karl Kattermann put up some pretty impressive numbers himself tossing

267-239-686, in steering his team to a well-played 2977-2863 five points

over a game T-Bowl quartet. Also lighting up the telescore with deuces were

Erik Kattermann 237, Peter Hancock 223 and Adam Gelvan 202. Pacing T-

Bowl was Matt Morris 211-545, Pat Mayer 182-534 and Nick Lepri 179.

Holiday I produced three solid scores in sweeping Montvale, 2815-2720,

Nick Cilento triggered the offense with 257-221-655 with help from Ryan

McGuire 242-614, North Jersey Singles Champ Lilly Sigona 213-558 and

Frank Magyar 204. Pushing Montvale were Dan Sproviero 196-542 and

Michaella Raab who tallied three over-average scores.

In other encounters, North Arlington caught fire and rolled six deuces inits shutout of Bowler City II, 3026-2670. High game on the pair belonged

to Vin Amato 264-609 followed by Tyler Keefe 215-223-630, Chris Liloia

214-223-620 and Donovan Battistus 203. Highs for BC II were Emily

Young 191, George Held 187 and Margaux Lesser.

Holiday II won five of seven points from Fair Lawn, 2868-2781, as the

entire squad contributed some fine scores-Craig Oriente 214-183, Tom

Chamberlain 212-583, Devin Crowley 184-180 and Justin Milligan 180.

For Fair Lawn, Madison Perry, fresh from her third place finish in

Saturdays North Jersey Singles Tournament, posted 223-213, Matt Myers

rolled 218-180, Nick Greco 203-186 and Hunter Perry 182. Closing out the

days matches, Bowler City III, took seven points from the vacancy prima-

rily due to Gianni Calzadilla 234, Nick Reyes 213-585 and Dana-Marie

    Laloo 208-575.

Ken Horvath 300 at Majestic LanesHOPELAWN, NJ Ken Horvath blasted a 300 game along with 247

and 223 for a 770 series in the Middlesex County Classic League atMajestic Lanes.
