Publisher's Corner by Sean AtheyHello Everyone!

Hope all of you are staying warm and safe. Seems like winter has set in with a vengeance. Make sure you have your emergency supplies in your vehicle as you travel in these dangerous winter conditions.

We have seen a few cars in the ditch in our travels so far... most seemed to look like the vehicle was taking a corner too fast for the road conditions.

Here's a picture of the latest "ditch victim" Lynette saw at the junction of 212 and 15.

2015 New Years Resolution(s)

The time has come again to make those promises to your-self. I, myself, have decided on two major areas of "resolve". The first one is clutter... and I don't mean making more if it! I made a great first step with the garage. I actually can park our car inside at night - with the door closed even. Although I sometimes wonder if I am becoming a professional "stuffer" because in a certain light it sometimes looks more like a hol-lowed out cave than a garage.... but the car fits and it is grate-ful... I think I heard it say "Thanks, buddy!" once when I was closing the door.

Secondly, we live at a time when communication tools are everywhere, yet we sometimes don't talk like we have in the past. So, in my case, I am going to make this a year of reaching out to my friends and family more. I tend to get caught up in bringing Tidbits to you each week and sometimes priorities get mixed up.... now I just have to find interesting things to say!

Have a great week and be safe out there!Sean Athey, owner/publisher

Have you broken your New Year’s resolutions yet? Many people have. When it comes to resolving to get control of your finances, however, the longer you do it, the more you benefit, and that can be an incentive to continue.

If you write checks at the end of the month (or especially if you have automatic deposits and bill paying and never ever see the money), you don’t have a close-up relation-ship with your cash. Money is far more subjective (and easier to spend) when you don’t actually touch the cash. Consider a no-frills 30 days as your New Year’s resolution, during which time you work to become more familiar with actual money on a daily basis.

Resolve to go 30 days with no unnecessary expendi-tures. Mortgage, of course. Car payment, and food and utilities, of course. But for 30 days go without coffee on the way to work, meals out, impulse spending, movies and popcorn ... you get the idea. If it isn’t necessary, don’t spend.

Start carrying cash if you’re in the habit of only carry-ing credit or debit cards. When you leave the house each day, count up the cash you’re carrying. If you need more, go to the ATM, but don’t give in and use a credit card for purchases.

Empty your pockets of change at the end of every day. Put it in a container with a lid and don’t touch it. At the end of the month, count it up and put it toward a credit-card bal-ance or savings. During the day, see how often you can get change in the form of coins, and add it to the pile.

Pick a few bills for which you normally write a check and

instead pay cash for money orders or cashier’s checks.Any activity having to do with finances is self-reward-

ing. You get to see the benefits of careful spending rather quickly. As you keep to your resolution, you’ll see your ex-penses come down, your savings increase and maybe your health even get better if your financial goals keep you from spending money on snacks while you’re away from home. But the first step is to become more aware of money.

It’s said that it takes 30 days to develop a habit. If you reduce your spending to necessities only for one month, it might become a habit you can keep.

I live in a semi rural area. We recently had a new neigh-bor call the local township administrative office to request the removal of the DEER CROSSING sign on our road. The reason: "Too many deer are being hit by cars out here! I don't think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore."

The Sheriff pulls up next to the guy unloading garbage out of his pick-up into the ditch. The Sheriff asked, "Why are you dumping garbage in the ditch? Don't you see that sign right over your head." "Yep," he replies. "That's why I am dumpin it here, cause it says "Fine for dumping garbage."

Q: While we spend a couple of months in Florida, our grandson Ronnie will be house-sitting, making sure the place is taken care

of. I asked him to make sure that he leaves a couple of taps dripping anytime the temperature dips below freezing. He just chuckled and said, “Won’t that run up your water bill?” Now I’m worried he won’t do it. What should I do to make sure he knows how important it is that the pipes don’t freeze? -- Carl H., via e-mail

A: At the risk of sounding flip, I’d tell Ronnie that while you handle the hopefully moderate water bill, he can cover the exorbitant cost of replacing burst pipes and repairing water damage. However, I have a feeling that he was just joking a bit. So, go easy on him, but make sure he knows you want him to keep the taps dripping.

Homes in the northern United States and Canada use higher-rated insulation than houses in the warmer southern states. That helps reduce frozen and burst pipes. But when a house isn’t regularly lived in, if the heat is kept to a minimum to save energy, and water isn’t running through the pipes daily, the risk of frozen pipes goes up.

If Ronnie lives in the house while you’re gone, the risk of frozen pipes may be minimal. But he still should check less-used areas each week, and daily when the temperature remains below freezing for several days. He should run his hand along exposed pipes in the basement or crawlspace to feel for cold spots that indicate freezing sections. And he should run water occasionally in sinks or tubs that don’t see regular use while you’re gone.

Make sure that Ronnie has contact information for repair contractors, plumbers and heating specialists so he can have any problems addressed immediately while you’re away.

HOME TIP: To prevent damage to exterior water spigots dur-ing cold snaps, shut off water to the outdoor spigots and drain

them completely so no water remains in the pipes.© 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Making your own flavored yogurt is cheap and much better for you. You can avoid a lot of added sugar. Start with

plain, unflavored yogurt and add: pureed fruits, toasted oats, honey, vanilla or almond extract, or plumped-up raisins (add enough hot water to cover a tablespoon of raisins and let sit for a minute or two). Yummy.

• “My son was allergic to something in store-bought tooth-paste, and the ones at the health-food and specialty stores seemed so expensive. I got a ‘recipe’ to make toothpaste, and it works so well that we all use it now. Just mix 1/2 cup of baking soda with a pinch of sea salt and some peppermint oil (stir in a few drops at a time). I keep it in a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Shake a bit into a little cup, and dip your tooth-brush into it. It scrubs off stains and is refreshing. The salty taste takes some getting used to, but it feels really clean for hours. Love it!” -- K.S. in Florida

• “A pinch of salt tossed in the coffee grounds will cut the bitterness in lower-quality coffee. This is especially useful if you get a good deal on a can of coffee that’s not your normal brand.” -- P.L. in New Jersey

• You can easily extend the amount of ground meat you have with lentils or oatmeal. They maintain a meaty texture and take up some of the flavor of the meat. There’s a reason Grandma used oatmeal in her meat-balls, too: It helps the meat retain moisture.

• “If you stick the end of your celery stalks in a cup of water and rocks (or in some very damp dirt), they will begin to regrow. This is

a great way to have a never-ending supply of celery. You also can regrow scallions from the root end.” -- Y.L.J. in Missouri

Getting out the door for fresh air and exercise during a cold Minnesota winter is a big challenge. No wonder I’m jealous when my friend in Florida emails cheery news about playing tennis in 74-degree weather.

To console me, she offered to share the warmth. In her playful manner she said, “If only the weather could be more evenly distributed across the country -- as if getting a good shake, like an upside-down Etch-a-Sketch, could even things out a bit.”

She wouldn’t even mind sharing some Florida sunshine

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our guinea pig, “Trixie,” died suddenly yesterday. She was fine, then she took short and deep breaths, and wouldn’t eat or come out of her igloo. A couple hours later we found her passed away, lying on her side. We don’t understand what happened. Unfortunately it was Sunday, and we have no small-animal vet in our town. Just curious if you have any idea what may have happened.

-- Diana, via email

DEAR DIANA: I’m sorry to hear about the death of your pet. Sadly, guinea pigs can fall victim to a number of different illnesses, and can do so shockingly fast. Sometimes, they show few to no outward symptoms. Respiratory illnesses, especially pneumonia, strike guinea pigs hard.

Guinea Pig’s Sudden Death a Mystery

Adenovirus, an illness that doesn’t always directly cause death, can lead to pneumonia as the guinea pig’s immune system weakens.

Guinea pigs also can suffer a stroke or heart attack at any age, often for no apparent reason.

When a guinea pig (or hamster, or other pet rodent) begins to show signs of distress -- such as weight loss (more than 2 ounces is cause for an immediate vet visit), hiding away in her igloo or refusing to eat -- get-ting help quickly is important, and that means getting your pet to the vet within hours or even minutes to give it the best chance.

In this case, a veterinarian wasn’t available right away. Wheek Care Guinea Pig Rescue lists a few first-aid items to keep on hand here: http://www.wheekcare.org/first-aid.html, as well as extensive tips on health signs to watch for. Daily monitoring of your pet is your best bet to combat the threat of sudden death.

and warm breezes to help us through these brutal winter days in the Midwest. Come summertime, I could reciprocate the favor. If only ...

Whether it’s hot or cold, or somewhere quite perfect in between, getting motivated to exercise is always the same. It’s the mat-ter of taking those first steps.

So, the bottom line is, wherever you live, getting out and getting moving is important all year round, even if you have to wear snowshoes instead of running shoes.

Here are quick start ideas:Give me five! Get muscles moving for

five easy minutes. Set the timer and arm-wrestle, jump rope or run and up down the stairs. Squeezing in a few minutes of playing in the snow will burn calories and give you a workout. Make snowballs, a fort, a tall snowman or a chorus of snow angels. If you lose track of time, remember that in family life, there doesn’t have to be a clock or a finish line.

Fun and games. Challenge your family with activities that

inspire healthy play both indoors and out. Have a ball playing basketball and football. Make it “tag” or “touch football”

for all ages to be part of the workout. When you come indoors, play ping-pong, set up plastic bottles for bowling pins or enjoy a floor hockey competition on the basement carpet.

Take a walk. Enjoy this year-round ex-ercise anytime of day. At 3 mph, you can burn 112 calories in a half hour. Increase your pace to a jog with older kids for an extra challenge. Or visit a nearby park or nature center for a long adventure hike. Climb rocks, inhale the aromas of the natu-ral world around you and take pictures to

capture the visual memories.• • •

the better doll books is the “Blue Book: Dolls & Values” by Jan Foulke and published by Holly House Books. This reference has been called the bible of doll collecting, and you might be able to find your doll referenced in it. If that fails, perhaps you might want to contact an expert. Sara Bernstein might be able to help you. Her contact is 732-536-4101, and www.sarabernsteindolls.com. There are more than 2,000 dolls referenced at this website.

• • •Q: I have a salesman sample of a Kerr blue enamel wood-

burning range. It is in good condition except that the temperature gauge is missing. How much is it worth, and where can I sell it? -- Marvis, Albuquerque, New Mexico

A: Have you contacted antiques dealers in your area? That would be my first thing to do. Richard Richardson also might be able to help you, since he is an expert in stoves and related items. His address is Good Time Stove Company, P.O. Box 306, Goshen, MA 01032. When contacting dealers and experts referenced in this column, it is always good manners to enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Be patient when waiting for a reply.

• • •Q: I bought a 6-inch ruler with a black velvet sleeve at a yard

sale about 20 years ago. It was made by Tiffany & Company and is sterling. I think it might be part of a set. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. -- Cliff, Hartford, Illinois

A: Throughout the 1940s and ‘50s, Tiffany & Company offered desk sets in their catalogs, and I think you are probably correct when you suggest it is part of a set. It is impossible for me to place a value on it. My suggestion is to show it to several dealers for their opinion.

• When the wildly successful 1965 film “The Sound of Music” was released in South Korea, one theater owner felt that the movie was too long. He took it upon himself to remedy the situ-ation -- by cutting out all the musical numbers.

• If you’re planning a trip to the Canadian province of New Brunswick, you might want to include a stop to see the Revers-ing Falls of St. John. While the St. John River flows into the Bay of Fundy at low tide, high tide in the bay is so extreme that it causes the water to reverse itself and flow from the bay back into the river.
