The Arrangers Janice L. McAllister, graduate of the University of Utah, is a co-author of Strings Extraordinaire, Holidays Extraordinaire! and More Strings Extraordinaire! She is part of the award-winning orchestra teaching team in the Logan City School District as well as a private teacher and frequent performer. She was named the “Secondary Teacher of the Year” in 1998 by the Utah Chapter of the American String Teachers Association and honored by the Utah Music Educators Association with their “Superior Accomplishment Award” for the 2002–2003 year. She is a past president of the Utah State Chapter of ASTA and was selected to be a participant in the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program for 2006.

Robert S. Frost earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Music Education from Utah State University and his doctorate in Music Education from the University of Northern Colorado. He has held leadership positions in state and national organizations, most recently as President of the Utah State Chapter of the American String Teachers Association (2000–2002). He has served as guest lecturer and clinician, and has conducted honor and clinic orchestras at many state, national, and international music educators conferences.

Dr. Frost is retired from the Cache County School District (Utah) after dedicating 30 years as a string specialist, having taught strings and orchestras at all levels. He directs the Cache Symphony Orchestra, maintains a private studio, and is active as a composer, arranger, author, clinician, and adjudicator. He holds membership in NAfME, ASTA, ESTA, and ASCAP.

Dr. Frost is the co-author of the All For Strings, Artistry in Strings and Viva Vibrato. Additionally, he has over 250 published works to his credit, including most recently String Techniques for Superior Musical Performance and Rhythm Techniques for Superior Musical Performance.

Dr. Frost and his wife, Dona, reside in Smithfield, Utah, and are the parents of five children.

The Arrangements Vive la Canadienne! (“Long Live the Canadian Girl”) was the Canadian national anthem in the nineteenth century until it was supplanted by “O Canada.” In 1939 it became the official march of the Royal 22nd Regiment Band, Canada’s French-speaking military regiment in Quebec. The melody consists of two contrasting themes: the first, a march theme supported by strong-short after-beats, and the second, lyrically played with more connected, legato bow strokes. Both themes provide strong cadences for appropriate phrasing. A dramatic change in dynamics is essential at m. 68 on the repeat in order to allow for the crescendo that brings the march to a rousing conclusion. An Emigrant’s Daughter is said to be the true and tragic tale of an Irish immigrant in the 1840s. The original tune was the old English song, “The Grenadier and the Lady.” This haunting melody calls for well-developed right and left hand techniques, a rich, expressive vibrato in the left hand, and a sensitive and controlled bow stroke to gently shape phrases. Melodic lines need beautiful legato bowing. Pizzicatos should be vibrated (m. 30) with a feeling of “strong/weak” or “phrase off ” typical in 34 meter. Harmonics require a very light LH finger touch with controlled bow weight and moderate bow speed.

Northland Frolic consists of two Canadian folk tunes. “I’se the Bye” is a raucous Newfoundland song about a braggart who builds his boat, then sails off to catch fish and a girl. It’s set in an era when cod was king, boats were necessary for travel, and “maggoty butter” was a fact of life. The brisk 68 meter with hooked bowings requires a fast bow stroke (“shoot the bow”). Grace notes moving to open string chords imitate bagpipes, part of the Canadian heritage. Make a real style contrast at m. 33 with expressive, legato bow strokes. Isolating the scale-like movement at m. 78 beginning with the bass/cello will help students master the technical demands of this fast section.

“The Mouth of the Tobique” (pronounced “toe-beek”) is a French-Canadian reel, the most popular tune type in the Irish dance music tradition. Reels are found in much of the music of Québec. Reels generally have the same two-part structure, an A and B part consisting largely of eighth note movement with accents on the first and third beats of the bar. This reel is different. It has an A, B and C part structure with strong syncopation in the C section. Teach the first melody together: Cello/Bass beginning at m. 93, 2nd Violin/Viola at m. 101. In any fast, “fingery” section, practicing with different rhythms (ex: long/short, short/long, etc.) will clean up technical passages far faster than many repetitions “as is.” Students need to be at the frog for each triplet pickup (ex: 2nd Vln./Vla. at m. 100.) “Phrase off” each of the couplets at m. 101. The biggest challenge will be the syncopation beginning at m. 117. Strong accents bowed near the frog are vital! Cues are given for technically advanced basses at m. 159. A foundation of strong, articulate notes on the beat will propel the piece bouncing and rollicking to the final bar.

Learning Bank: Canada Canada is a North American country consisting of ten provinces and three territories. It is located in the northern part of the continent and extends from the Atlantic Ocean on the east to the Pacific Ocean on the west. This vast territory makes it the world’s second largest country in area. Its common border with the United States is the longest in the world. Canada is similar to Great Britain in that it is a parliamentary democracy as well as a constitutional monarchy. Queen Elizabeth II is its head of state. It is a bilingual nation with both English and French as official languages. It has a highly diversified economy with an abundance of natural resources making it one of the most highly developed countries in the world.

Aboriginal peoples have inhabited this great northern land for thousands of years. Europeans Leif Ericsson (c. 1000 AD) and his fellow Norsemen were followed by Venetian explorer John Cabot (c. 1450–98), who is credited as being the first European to “discover” what is now Canada in 1495. Hired by the English, Cabot and his crew were looking for a new route to Asia. Thinking he had landed in northwestern Asia instead of Cape Breton Island or Newfoundland, he formally claimed the land for England’s King Henry VII. Various other European explorers followed, also searching for the elusive Northwest Passage to Asia with dreams of untold wealth, treasure, and trade.

The French were the first Europeans to actually settle in Canada. The French settlements were founded on the beaver-fur trade, sending their furs back to Europe. Trading settlements were established in Acadia (Nova Scotia) in 1603, and Québec in 1609. French settlement grew from these early beginnings to become New France, ruled from 1627 to 1763, when under the Treaty of Paris following the various Anglo-French-Indian wars, New France came under British rule. Thus, much of Canadian folk music can be traced to France and the British Isles.
