Welcome to the January/February edition of Family Go Live Magazine. In this issue…

Dr Pixie McKenna: When not furrowingher eyebrows at people’s unmentionables on ChannelFour’s Embarrassing Bodies, she’s going to her mumfor parenting advice. She tells us why.

If you’re appy and you know it: Was your child lucky enough to receive a tablet from Santa? We find out which apps are the best for helping children develop skills through play.

What’s hot The Very Hungry Caterpillar - Everyone’s favourite ravenous larvae turns 45 this year. Let’s hope someone gets a decent scran down him for his 50th.

The oh-god-will-you-ever-shut-up journey. A survey for National Teething Week showed tht the average UK parent clocks up around 432 miles in their baby’s first year on journeys purely aimed at getting their baby to stop crying. That’s the equivalent of a journey from Exeter to Edinburgh!

Canine couture. A survey from Vetsure pet insurance showed that 57% of us buy luxury products for our four legged friends at least once a month. But does a schnauzer need a Dior jumper? Really?

What’s not Your conversation, apparently. According to a survey by children’s newspaper First News, 77% of British children admit to running out of things to talk about when conversing with family over the breakfast and dinner table. Thanks guys.

Frozen. Come on guys, we’ve been watching the adventures of Elsa, Sven et al for what feels like an eternity now. It’s time to Let. It. Go.

The school run. A new survey by Allianz revealed that parents’ stress levels were 30% higher in the morning as they wake up and anticipate the horrors of the school run - with the peak time for stress being 8.15am.

Sick of people judging your parenting choices? You’re not alone.

Ever experienced your mum getting huffy over your dedication baby-lead weaning? You’re not alone! New research from Nurufen reveals that 68% of parents feel judged on the decisions they make for their child, with the ‘most-judged’ areas being diet and nutrition (50%), parenting style (43%) and their child’s behaviour (33%).

And perhaps unsurprisingly, when it comes to being given guidance without asking for it, parents found they got the most guidance

People judgingyour parentingchoices?

from their own mothers (36%), closely followed by partners (26%) and friends (23%). Commenting on the findings, Dr Pixie McKenna, TV GP and a mum of one, commented: “Being a parent can be one of the hardest but most rewarding of jobs and one that causes plenty of second-guessing.

Whilst these results show that many parents feel judged on their parenting choices by others - there are also positive signs that parents are looking to each other, whether family and friends in person, or online support groups - for advice and support. Even as a GP, I still turn to my family and friends for their top-tips when it comes to making choices for my child.”

With drowning the third biggest cause of accidental death among children under five in the UK, baby swimming isn’t just an opportunity for a splash about and some mummy-baby bonding, it could also help save your child’s life one day.

Alison Ogden, who runs baby swimming class Water Babies at locations across Liverpool, explains why: “It may sound strange but the reason for many children drowning or getting into trouble in water is panic. They tend to tumble in face first, and when the water hits their chest they get a fright and don’t know how to get themselves out of the situation.

“The good news is that children are capable of learning the skills they will need to rescue themselves from birth, and that’s exactly what we teach them. So they know that the first thing they should do is flip onto their back so their lungs don’t fill up with water. They also learn how they can get themselves to the side of the pool and to safety. It’s not just about giving them the physical skills they need to be safe around water, it’s about honing their mental abilities too.”

And this is far from theoretical. Alison knows of at least five children from her class who have been saved thanks to the skills they learned at her Waterbabies classes. It’s not all about the serious stuff though, for Alison, one of the biggest benefits for parents is the chance to bond one-on-one in what can be a truly - pardon the pun - immersive experience.

Alison continues: “Of course, we all do our best to spend as much time as possible with our babies, but technology, siblings and the allure of the TV can mean that giving them our truly undivided attention can be something of a challenge.

“In the water, all that changes. You can’t take your smartphone in the pool with you, so you can really focus on your baby - that’s what makes it so special. We find dads especially love the classes. Many baby-focussed activities only run throughout the week, but we run at weekends too, meaning working fathers can get involved too. What’s not to like?”

Co-sleeping - the name given to sharing the same bed as your baby - is a popular practice, with the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) estimating that around half of UK mums co-sleep.

It’s not hard to see why. As well as enabling closeness and bonding between mother and baby easier, it can also help combat the stress of sleepless nights, as your baby can quite easily breastfeed while you doze or sleep.

However, it’s not without its dangers, and new guidance from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) is aiming to make parents aware of the link between co-sleeping and Sudden Infant Death syndrome (SIDS).

The updated recommendations say that parents should be made aware of the link between SIDS and co-sleeping, especially in instances in which one or both partners smoke or have been drinking alcohol, where the baby was premature or had a low birth weight, or where one or both partners are drug users. Conditions such as sleep apnoea can also make co-sleeping unsafe.

Discussing NICE’s new co-sleeping recommendations, Elaine McInnes, a practice teacher of health visiting and professional development officer from the Institute of Health Visiting, and who also helped to develop the new NICE co-sleeping recommendations, said: “Being a new parent is exhausting. We know that many new mothers and fathers will, at

some point or another, fall asleep with their newborn and parents should not feel guilty or embarrassed. Sharing a bed with your baby at night can aid breastfeeding and in some cultures, co-sleeping is seen as perfectly normal. However, the Department of Health advises that the safest place for a baby to sleep is in a cot, and if that cot is beside the bed it need not interfere with breast feeding.

“It’s important that parents are given the most current evidence-based information as far as possible, are comfortable and happy in the decision they make with regard to sleeping arrangements and are supported in making the safest choices for sleeping arrangements.”

For those parents who would still like to try co-sleeping with their baby, there are several ways to minimise the risks. For example, keeping bedding light can help prevent overheating and suffocation, and babies should never be left alone in an adult bed in case they accidentally roll off the side.

The new Kumon Aigburth Study Centre has opened, and will offer Kumon’s unique maths and English programmes to children of all ages and abilities. Established for over 50 years, the programmes enable children to develop their study skills and confidently tackle advanced work.

Kumon develops children through the acquisition of independent learning skills, rather than teaching in the conventional sense. Your child will therefore be equipped with the ability to learn for themselves so they do not become dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

Kumon Educational is the UK’s largest supplementary education provider, with over 69,000 students studying at more than 640 study centres.

The Aigburth Study Centre is located at St Mary’s Church hall annex on Aigburth Road close to Cressington train station, with classes running on Tuesday and Thursday 3:30-5:30pm.

and you know it

Want to make sure your child is getting the most out of their tablet? Lucy Gill, Director of Apps and Technology at Fundamentally Children, an organisation dedicated to helping children develop skills through play, tells us what’s on her ‘must download’ list for kids of all ages.

“At Fundamentally Children we encourage you to choose apps (we have a wide range reviewed on our website) that are fun whilst helping your child to learn and develop while they play. Here are some ideas.”

Apps for 0 - 3 year olds“Prior to their 4th birthday, children develop at an enormous rate. We recommend finding apps that support development of skills. For example, if they are learning to recognise colours, shapes, patterns then apps like Busy Shapes from Seven Academy and TinyHands apps are a good choice, and also help with fine motor skills. Or if they are learning letters or numbers, consider apps like Justin’s Lettersounds, Farm 123 and interactive books by Nosy Crow. It’s particularly important to encourage creative, imaginative and social skills - try apps like My Playhome, Duckie Deck Sharing, Mister Maker, Bug Art and Louie Teach Me.”

Apps for 4 - 7 year olds“As children start their first years of school, apps can be fabulous to support their education, helping to develop their strengths further or making harder areas more fun. There are apps like Jolly Phonics Lettersounds to encourage literacy in line with the national curriculum, great maths apps like those from Squeebles, wonderfully creative apps like Toca Builders, and if you are looking to inspire a future scientist try Toca Lab, Piiig Labs or My Incredible Body.”

Apps for 8 - 12 year olds“As children reach 8 years old or beyond you’re likely to find them suggesting apps themselves. Games like Minecraft are current favourites and do have developmental benefits. However, suggesting

good developmentally sound apps is a great idea. A few include: Brain pop (a fun video resource), Brains my body, Geochallenge, Monster Physics and Dinorama.

“Our main tip is to do your research. Once you’ve chosen, don’t forget to manage the amount of time your child spends using screens, ensuring a balanced play diet - with active, social and imaginative activities off-screen taking up the majority of their play time.”

Parent Review

Rock-climbing is a popular hobby! We hear from a couple of parents who visited Awesome Walls climbing wall, as they tell of their experiences…

“We chose this venue because we wanted something different to the usual play centres. We invited 8 children aged 6-8years and they all had amazing fun!

We had 1 hour climbing, starting with the smaller walls and working up to the bigger ones. All of the children gained confidence and it was lovely to hear them all cheering each other on.

We then went into the room upstairs for a party which was great! We brought our own balloons and party food. The staff were amazing with the kids and very helpful. We would thoroughly recommend it to anyone thinking of having a party here!”

Dad, Keith, also said that Awesome Walls was a great place to take the kids on a rainy day! “My children had visited previously with their school and when doing my research I was able to find out a great deal about the centre

from their web site which included a three for two offer which in itself was a great deal.

When I phoned the centre to ask for advice on what would work best for me and my boys, I was advised that a taster session would be best.

We went and had an excellent time - the instruction was clear and friendly and we were shown great patience.

Shortly after we got home, I was asked “what can you do when it rains and you’ve got two children to entertain?”- it was one of the easiest questions I’ve been asked in ages. I just wished I’d had the presence of mind to work in a pun about climbing the walls!

Exceedingly friendly, great exercise and very different to most other activities children do. My boys enjoyed it, I enjoyed it, and we’ll be back in a few days, raining or not.”

Classes forkids of allabilities

Play is a central part of most happy childhoods. It helps children to build their social skills, make friends and improve their physical strength. However, finding clubs and classes to suit kids with disabilities or additional needs can often be a struggle, disappointing when you consider that some 770,000 children in the UK have a disability of some kind - that’s 6% of the child population. In finding activities that children can enjoy, the primary focus should of course be on activities they’ll love, and be able to achieve in. We take a look at some great activities to consider:

Trampolining Because trampolining is so exhilarating, trampoline is a class that all children are guaranteed to enjoy. It’s also an excellent way to build co-ordination, spatial awareness, confidence, fitness levels and stamina.

Arts classes Because the focus is on solo work, while still working together in a group, art classes can be excellent for children with additional needs. Class leaders quite easily able to differentiate the tasks set so all children can achieve and arts and crafts can be excellent way for children to express themselves and refine motor skills.

Riding lessonsHorse riding has long been a popular activity for children with either developmental or physical disabilities, largely through the work of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). According to the RDA, medical professionals have long recognised the therapeutic benefits for the rider with “the warmth and three dimensional movement of the horse is transmitted through the rider’s body, gradually making it more relaxed and supple, strengthening core stability, reducing spasms and improving balance, posture and co-ordination.”

A TASTE OF INDIAN SPICE AT HOLDI

On a blustery winter’s evening, my friend and I headed to Holdi in Woolton Village for some spicy delights. Our expectations were high as the stylish Indian was awarded ‘Best Restaurant’ at the Liverpool Food and Drink Festival Awards in 2013.

Impressed by the sleek modern interiors and friendly atmosphere, we were seated in a comfortable booth, while we perused the menu.

We were soon served poppadoms, which came with a fantastic selection of dips (red onion, mango chutney, mint yoghurt and lime pickle).

The menu featured some tempting specialities, such as Holdi Thawa (chicken or lamb tikka, garlic chicken and lamb chops prepared with herbs and spices, fried peppers and onions). All the classic dishes you would expect from any good Indian restaurant were on offer too, from Madras and Rogan Josh to Korma and Dupiaza.

We opted to share the Chicken Raj Shahi, which was recommended by our waiter for the evening, and the Chicken Karahi with Chana Pilau Rice, a Garlic Nan and a Peshwari Nan.

The Chicken Raj Shahi was a really tasty medium hot dish, which I had never tried before but I would definitely order again. It went very well alongside the Chicken Karahi, which was equally as delicious with a slightly hotter kick.

The nan breads and rice were cooked perfectly and were a great accompaniment to our main dishes.

With such a varied menu and welcoming atmosphere, Holdi would make a great venue for a night out or a family meal with the kids. My four year old loves the taste of Chicken Korma and nan bread but Holdi also offers English dishes, such as fish fingers and chips, for the less adventurous.

Bringing a touch of spice to such a cold evening, Holdi certainly lived up to its great reputation; our entire meal was first class.

In the mood for some foodie fun this spring? You’re in luck. Organisers of Liverpool Food and Drink Festival, SK Events & PR, have announced the launch of an additional more family focused festival, ‘Liverpool Food and Drink Spring Festival’, taking place over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, 5th-6th April 2015.

Following the continued success in organising Liverpool Food and Drink Festival for the past seven years, SK Events & PR will provide people across Merseyside with a second helping of foodie fun at the spring festival that will once again return to the city’s picturesque Sefton Park, this time with a much greater focus on families and children.

Liverpool Food and Drink Spring Festival will transform the park into a fun-filled Easter playground, offering an array of interactive activities and elements of ‘grow your own’ with an edible garden and fresh flower market. There will be plenty to keep the children entertained, with everything from a classic egg and spoon race and Easter egg decorating, to a live petting farm and egg hunt with hidden clues and Easter surprises hidden around the park.

Not forgetting the food and drink element to the festival, there will be an abundance of treats on offer from over 50 producers located in the themed areas across the field. Little ones can enjoy the fun and games on offer, adults can take part in one of the wine tasting sessions, relax at the champagne bar, or head over to the on-site pop-up restaurant to enjoy a specially prepared Easter roast dinner with the family.

Denise Harris, Managing Director at SK Events & PR, said: “With the success of Liverpool Food and Drink Festival over the past seven years, expanding our offering and targeting a family market felt like the perfect next step for us. Merseyside has been screaming out for an event of this type, and with our brand new festival being very family orientated, there seemed like no better time for us to stage the event than over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend.

“We have hand-picked the producers and carefully planned each and every activity to guarantee visitors an exciting and fun-filled Easter day out for the entire family.”

Along with the activities, food, drink and shopping at Liverpool food and Drink Spring Festival, visitors can also enjoy live music, performances and themed demonstrations over the two days.

Is your carready for winter?

Frosty weather, cold nights, freezing roads - is your car ready to deal with the winter months ahead? Here are a few winter driving tips from Renault Liverpool - it’s important to keep your car maintained, but even more so in the coming winter months.

Coolant and Antifreeze is a fairly cheap to maintain, but a frozen and cracked engine will be expensive and keep you off the road. Check your antifreeze is topped up; it’s important not to mix different types, refer to your vehicle handbook or your local Renault dealer for advice.

How old is your battery? Most last around five years but with winter driving, heaters on full, and wipers & lights on in the dark mornings, the demand is high for your vehicle battery.

To prolong your battery life, turn down your heater and switch off heated screens once your journey is under way.

Make sure your windscreen and windows are all clear, top up your screen wash with a de-icer washer fluid and keep your car clean from grit and salt, which also prevents scratching that paintwork.

Cover up your windscreen at night to prevent ice building up and give you a few more precious minutes in the morning when trying to leave the house for the school run and work.

Slow down! Black ice and snow make driving treacherous in the best of times. Approximately 25% of accidents are caused by the driver incorrectly estimating the speed of his or her vehicle? ( source: Lab*)

And finally, fuel! Make sure you keep your tank topped up, but just in case you do get stuck, plan your journey before you set off. Check local weather reports and traffic bulletins, and if driving far, make sure you have a few essentials from our winter driving checklist to keep in your car:

Ice scraper and de-icer, torch and batteries, a blanket or two, first aid kit, mobile phone charger, reflective warning triangle, a road map (you can’t always rely on smart phones!), a snack and a hot drink in a thermos flask, small shovel for digging out of snow in the worst of conditions.

Use the voucher at the back of the magazine to get your free winter check at Renault Liverpool and take the worry out of driving this winter.

A big change on the legal scene is that the public can now engage a barrister directly, without having to go through a solicitor or another intermediary. We talk to Atlantic Chambers to find out more about the Public Access Scheme.

What are the benefits of the Public Access Scheme?“Ideally, it should save the public money. Now, instead of engaging a solicitor and a barrister, clients who feel able to deal with some aspects of the case themselves can just pay for a barrister to undertake specific work on your case, such as advising you in conference and representing you in court.”

What is the difference between a barrister and a solicitor?“Solicitors tend to be experts in the processes of taking legal action, or, as it is better known, litigation. This will generally mean client meetings, arranging paperwork, liaison with third parties etc. Whereas, a lot of a barrister’s work is court based, particularly those practising family law.”

What sort of case is suitable for public access?“Generally, it cannot be used for cases where legal aid has been granted but it will often be appropriate for divorce cases, disputes about money and property, and cases involving arrangements for children where parents or grandparents are in dispute.”

So how can people find out if using the Public Access Scheme is right for them?“Call up the chambers of your choice, and speak to either the barrister or their clerk. They will ask you questions about your case, what you hope your barrister will do and advise what they think the best course of action is.”

Barristers and the Public Access Scheme: What does it mean for you?

Doggy daycare onyour doorstep

With new research from Vetsure pet insurance revealing that 72% of pet owners in Liverpool say their pet is equally, if not more, important than other family members, it’s no wonder that more and more people are looking for high quality doggy daycare to ensure that their pooches aren’t left pining while they’re at work.

That’s where Tails in the City comes in. Fully licenced by Liverpool City Council, it’s a dog crèche offering professional day care for dogs. And they’re not just left in kennels all day either. Tails in the City provides a modern, multi-environment setting which includes play areas, trees for relaxing under, log cabins, sand pits, pool areas and agility space. To make life easier for pet owners, they also offer a pick-up and drop-off service for pets.

Talking about the services they offer, Julia of Tails in the City said: “So many people feel that their lives could be enhanced by owning a dog, but dogs are social creatures, and if you work full time, it’s simply not fair to leave them on their own all day.

Doggy daycare isn’t the only service they offer either. Tails in the City also offers dog walking, cat sitting, holiday boarding, and a puppy foundation course. Running on Sunday afternoons over seven weeks, the course covers house training and socialisation, as well as teaching of all the basic commands such as sit, down, wait, stay, heel and recall.

Julia continues: “We’re basically a one-stop shop for pet owners in the city. We know that while owning a pet is great fun, and unbelievably rewarding, it also comes with a great deal of responsibility. We’re here to make those responsibilities a little easier to manage.”

Harnessing

plant power with

Forever Living

Aloe vera has been a staple of many beauty products for some years now, but what is it about this little succulent plant that makes it so prized by the cosmetics and health industries? We talk to Sara Greenlees, of Forever Living about how plant power helped her so much, she decided to make a business out of it.

How did you get involved with the company? “I am an independent distributor with Forever Living Products and have been building my business since May this year. Before this, I was a primary school teacher for 24 years, and was looking for something different that I could do to earn a living, and that would give me more time to spend with my daughter and my elderly Mum.”

How has Aloe Vera helped you? “I started drinking aloe vera nearly four years ago, having been recommended to drink it to help with my joint mobility by my Tai Chi teacher.

Did it work?“Within 2 months of drinking the aloe vera, I found that I was much more supple which made the Tai Chi movements much easier to do. Over time, I’ve also found that I have more energy, my skin is clearer, my hair is stronger and I very rarely have stomach upsets.”

We’ve heard a lot about the ‘Clean 9’. Tell us more about your experiences with that. “In May this year, I completed the Clean 9, which is a nine day cleanse. It involved drinking a lot of aloe vera gel to flush the toxins out of my body, and taking a protein shake for two days, then

introducing only healthy foods back into your diet over the next seven. Whilst doing the cleanse I felt amazing, and I lost 10 lbs in 9 days.”

To find out more about the Clean 9, or find out more about opportunities as a Forever Living distributer, call Sara on 0778 428 9388 or email on [email protected].

If, like so many of us, you’ve spent the last month mainlining Baileys and kidding yourself that the fruit in mince pies contributes to some of your five a day, getting fit and healthy again is likely to be top of your list of priorities for 2015. But could a personal trainer help you achieve your goals?

To many, it seems like a needless expense. Surely we all know what we need to do, it’s just a matter of motivating ourselves to actually get down the gym and do it? However, a personal trainer can help with not just getting you to do the exercise you need to do, but with overhauling your whole lifestyle for the better. Kerry Russell of Kerry’s Fitness Studios in Childwall, explains:

“It’s all too easy to become complacent about your own health and fitness. We all lead busy lifestyles, and the demands placed on us by family, hectic careers and our social lives can mean that many people find motivating themselves hard work, or impossible at worst.

This is where a good personal trainer can help. They can assess your current levels of fitness, consider your goals, and then work with you to create an individually tailored regime to help you to achieve those goals quickly and safely.

“You’d be amazed by how many people simply do the wrong type of exercise. One of the first things I tell my clients is that your diet is what helps you lose weight, and resistance training is what changes your body composition.

Doing cardio does help with fat loss, but it only breaks down your existing tissue – leaving you with a soft, skinny fat look. To get that coveted ‘toned’ look, you need to lift heavy weights, but many people just don’t realise what sort of exercise their body needs. It’s these sort of issues that a personal trainer can help you with.”
