Historical development of the Central Statistical Office (ZIMSTAT) The Central statistical office was established in 1894 when the British South African Company (BSAC) fi rst establ ishe d a record and st at isti cal depa rt me nt Th e department was under the control of !ebert !ar"ey upon its establishment !erbet then died in #atopos area$ and the Ci"il Commissioner based in !arare (the then Salisbury) too% o"er his functions The first censuses were carried out in 189& in Bulawayo for which the #inin' and ci"il commissioners supplied estimates of the minin' and urban population respecti"ely n 189$ another census was conducted throu'h the office of the actin' ma'istrate By 19*4 a "ariety of independent sections was set up to en'a'e in the collection of statistics A recommendation was made that 'reater efficiency would be achie"ed if these duties were centrali+ed in a department under ,ualified statisticians A monetary  pro"ision was made$ upon recommendations for the establishment of a Statistical Bureau under the #inistry of !ome Affairs The Bureau was tas%ed with • Carryin' out any census • Coll ect in' $ compi lin ' and analy sis of sta ti sti cal inf ormat ion for the commercial$ industrial$ a'ricultural$ minin'$ social spheres of the economy • Col labo rati n' wit h -o"ernment in coll ect ion$ compili n'$ coor dina tin'$ analysis and publication of statistical records of administration n 19./$ the office came under the #inistry of economic Affairs and subse,uently chan'ed its name to Central Statistical 0ffice (CS0) n 1981 it was transferred to the #inistry of inance and 2conomic 3e"e lopment ollowin' the splittin' of the #inistry in April *//&$ the department was transferred to the #inistry of 2conomic 3e"elopment  Bindura Univer sity of Science Edu cation  Janet Chido Mutanh a B0!!"#$  Bachelor of Co%%e rce in &inancial Intelli'ence onou rs )e'ree 1
