INTRODUCTION

Myfilegeodatabasedesignisabasedonpracticalworkexperienceasan

archaeologistfortheNationalParksService.OriginallyIwasgoingtodesigna

geodatabasespecificallyforhistoricstructuresbutthatisnotpracticaleventhough

anumberofpeoplethatworkforDeathValleyNationalParkcouldbenefitform

havingthatdataaccessibleviaageodatabase,butdonothaveclearancetoall

sensitivearchaeologicaldatasocannotaccessthisgeodatabase.Iconcludedthatin

therealworldsituation,withtheparknowhavinganewsevereupandrunning

ArcGIS10,themostpracticalwaytosolvethisproblemwouldbetocreatean

ArcSDEsothatallthedatacouldbestoredinonelocationandpermissionscouldbegrantedfordifferentlevelsofaccess.Thehydrologistandthebotanistandthe

archaeologistcouldallhavelevelsofdataaccesssetsothattherewouldbesomedata,non-sensitivedata,availabletootheremployees.Soindesigningthisproject

geodatabaseIkeptthisinmind.ThenetworkdoescrashalotinDeathValleysoI

knoweveryonewouldwantafilegeodatabasetoworkinlocallybutthenthedatacouldbeuploadeddailytotheArcSDEgeodatabaserunningonthenewserver.

DESIGN

Mygeodatabasedesigntakesintoaccountthefactthatanythingwerecordinthe

fieldcanberecordedasapointlineorpolygon.Therecanbeapointonabuilding,a

lineorapolygonsoeachdatasetcontainsafeatureclassforeachgeometry.Because

theNationalParksServicehasastandardizedcodesystemforrecordkeepingsuch

asassigninganASMIS(archaeologicalsitemanagementinformationsystem)IDto

eachsite,andassigningaWACCNumber(WesternArchaeologicalConservation

Center)numberorIDtomostsitesand,thateverysitewillbegiveastatePrimary

numbertheseattributeswerecreatedasdomainswithaTEXTvalueassignedto

them.

IcreatedfarmorethantheassignmentaskedforbutIfeltIneededtocompleteornearlycompletethegeodatabaseIthoughtwouldbemostfunctionalfortheworkI

didatDeathValleyNP.Inearlycompletedalltheconceptualdomainsandsubtypes

thatIwantedtoincludeacceptIdidnotaddtheNationalRegisterEligiblycodeddomainandsubtype(yet)thatImentionedinmyPowerpoint.Withsometime,in

thenearfuture,Iwilladdthisdomainandthecodes.

thedesignofmyfeaturedatasetsaretogiveapersonworkingIthefieldaquick

guidetorecordingtheresourcesasperthestatesrequirementswithouthavingto

typeintextoneachandeverythingrecorded.ThedropdownmenuscreateconsistencyandIknowforafactthatmyformerco-workerswouldappreciatethis

designgreatlyasmostofthemhatetousethetechnologybecauseitssotimeconsumingandcomplicated-anditshouldnthavetobe!

CONCLUSION

IttookmeawhiletosynthesizethedesignofmygeodatabasebutonceIfiguredit

outIwasabletodesignageodatabasethatIfeelisveryuserfriendlyandwillonlyafewdomainmodificationshereandthere,itsageodatabasedesignthatcouldbe

usedasastandardizeddesignforalltheNationalParksinCalifornia.
