Chair Report

As new Chairman of the CIB, I’d like to begin by thanking Cathy Gislason, our past chair, for her commitment and energy over the past 2 years. I’d also like to thank past executive mem-bers for their willingness to play a supportive role and volunteerism for the club, namely: Mel-ba Nelson (Membership Chair) and Doug Unia (Presentation Coordinator). The remaining peo-ple in executive positions have agreed to stand for another term. We rounded out 2015 with our annual Christmas Banquet, organized by Peter and Sylvia Sparke, Bob and Melba Nelson and Malcolm and Robyn Arnold (also now famously known as the Sparke Plugs). They not only managed to completely change venues at very short notice to Fairwinds Golf Club, but put on a song (their lyrics to the tune of Doo-Wah Diddy) to the delight of the party-goers! Thank you very much guys, and to our DJs for the evening Doug Unia and Graeme Cook the music even met with Elaine’s approval, it was a fun night. Our Annual Trophy Awards were:

Terry and Jerrie MacFarlane received the Member of the Year Award, they must have reached their Platinum BC Ferries Frequent Sailing level by now!

Dave Harris received the Piston Broke Award, his treasured car had braking issues during the 2015 BATS trip. Apparently it was hard work watching his brakes being serviced by fellow club mem-bers in such heat, even the hotel owner felt sorry and erected a canopy to provide a little shade.

Plans are now underway for our 2016 run calendar, the first being the Polar Bear Run at Moorecroft Park, Nanoose Bay which took place January 17th, during a break in the rain, perfect timing. 42 walkers attend-ed, one of the largest crowds on this annual event. We noticed some seals in the cove by Vesper Point, but they quickly disappeared, probably our Polar Bear outfits scared them off. Our first General Meeting of 2016 was on January 21st, Bill and Valerie Grace won their 2016 member-ship dues. Following the meeting Brian Collings put on a presentation on tires for classic cars and oil in classic engines. Great attendance and material discussed. Our next General Meeting is on February 18th at the Lantzville Legion, hope to see you there. Our next club event is bowling on February 28th, 2016 at 2:00 PM, thank you Marilyn Tarry for organiz-ing. More events are in the works along with Brits On The Beach and Brits ‘Round BC. Hopefully drivers have already completed their registration for the Long Distance Award, this year should see some high miles recorded. Drive safe and enjoy! Thank you to all the branch volunteers for your time and commitment to our club community and success-es! Regards, Steve Roebuck - CIB Chair.

Polar Bear Walk, Sunday, January 17th 2016

7th Annual Polar Bear Walk We were very blessed by the weather for our walk around Moorecroft Regional Park on Sunday, January 17th, because it changed from heavy rain in the early morning to patch-es of blue sky by the time we set off towards Vesper Point. There were 42 members who braved the somewhat inclement weather and almost eve-ryone did the 30 to 45 minute walk around the trails. After the walk we headed off to Fairwinds Golf and Country Club Restaurant and had our lunch. The food was very good, but service a little on the slow side for some. All in all it was a good day and lots of fun was had by all. The prize winners: 1st Prize - Marilyn Tarry. Adoption of "O-ECC" polar bear for one year, plus CFW Cal-endar and Tim Horton's card. 2nd Prize - Howard Lockhart. Greenpeace Calendar and Tim Horton's card 3rd Prize - Marge Sabourin. Magnificent polar bear-skin rug. In all, we raised $105.00 towards Canadian Federation of Wildlife Arctic Campaign. Malcolm & Janet Hargrave

On a suggestion from our past Chairperson at the January 2016 Executive meeting I have been busy working on a historical archive of past club minutes on our website. These are now available to all of the current membership to see and enjoy by going to the Gallery Page, then clicking on the Members Gallery link. You will need the username and password, which will be renewed on an annual basis in March. I was able to extrapolate minutes going back to the year 2001 and it is so interesting to see the historical story. Prior to 2001 there are almost no useable minutes kept or posted in the BEANO unfortunately. Here are some of the interesting anecdotes:

2001 January meeting held at the Quarterway Pub with 12 members in attendance. February that same year met at the Longwood Brew Pub, but too noisy to hear. March that same year met in the Brew Pubs “luxurious” upstairs Boardroom. The women met separately and called themselves the “BEANO Babes” and they

spent the time playing the lotteries. They also wanted more shopping time on the road trips.

2001 the club produced a calendar with member’s car pictures for $3 each. November 2001 the meetings were moved to the ABC Restaurant N. Nanaimo. 2004 we produced logoed club shirts for sale. July 2004 the ABC restaurant had double booked the space, so being resilient the

club met on the outside patio. The BEANO was PRINTED and available at the meeting to save postage. 2006 January- Club nametags introduced and could be purchased for $4.50 That same month the society Lord Montague of Beaulieu award was introduced for

the best restoration of a British car. And as always, LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS! May 2006 meeting…OOPS! No one took minutes of the meeting, the treasurer and

chairman were out of town so no financial report either. It is interesting to see “New Member” names introduced in the past meeting minutes

since many of these people are still active members. So you get an idea of what and who historically contributed to our interesting and active branch to ensure the continuation of our Central Island club branch. And as always not-ed in the minutes, we need active Volunteers to step up and continue the success of our club going into the future. (What have we learned from the Comox Valley branch de-mise?) Look on the website and have a “Blast from the Past”. Paul Tilroe, Central Island Webmaster.

Club Events – Paul Mansell Paul was unable to attend the meeting tonight, however several suggestions have been proposed. Paul will be informed of same and will contact the individuals concerned to confirm and finalize any details necessary. - However, Marilyn Tarry has arranged, with a local Bowling Alley, for a fun afternoon of Club Bowling. This will take place on Sunday, Feb 28th, and Marilyn is circulating a sign up sheet here tonight. - The Brown Bag Auction will happen again this year and will be held in conjunction with the April General Meeting. Ken Tanguay has kindly volunteered to be our “Grand” auctioneer again this year. - Steve Harris will be pleased to open up “Fawlty Towers” again this year sometime in June, for a Club afternoon of Tea and show and shine. Paul will be in contact with Ste-ve and arrange the final details. - Michael Brocklebank has offered to set up some type of Wine Tour - Steve Wallenben will liaise with the Gabriola Lions Club re our participation with a show and shine again this year in connection with the Gabiola Concert on the Green which is held in August. Paul will get in touch with both the above to arrange times, dates, etc. - Ken Tanguay has advised that he will “NOT” be able to handle the arrangements for the Club to participate in the Seaside Cruisers show and shine for this year, which hap-pens on Fathers Day. He would like to hear from anyone who can take it over for him. Beano – Graeme Cook Graeme was not in attendance at this meeting. Website – Paul Tilroe Paul has now included a “historical’ section on the Web under a privacy clause, so have a look. It was questioned as to whether or not we want a Classified section on the Club Website. A suggestion was made that we contact Gerry Parkinson who handles the main site and Gerry asked that we forward all ads to him for inclusion on the main site. Steve asked for approval from our club members and all approved. Regalia – Marilyn Tarry Marilyn advised that at this time unfortunately we cannot order any Regalia merchan-dise for our own Club’s stock to have on hand at meetings and other events. The main Club is looking for a new person to handle the Regalia merchandise from the main club

and once this person has been elected, things will change. However, in the meantime, you can order direct from the Website, as all the merchandise is listed there. Brits on the Beach: As we are all aware, Steve Wareing and Adrian Rice will be retiring from heading up this event next year. They have suggested we get down to business and elect a “Project Manager” to be installed this year and work with them to get them up to speed before this year’s event and to be able to handle the next event on their own. New Business: A motion is being requested for the purchase of a new Club Laptop for use in the Club presentations. Motion made by Steve Harris, that the Club purchase a new Laptop for the cost of some-thing from $500.00, to a maximum of $600.00. Seconded by Bob Thompson. All in favor, motion carried. Steve Harris would like to propose that we increase our rental fee to the Legion, or to leave the rental amount where its at and make a donation to the Legion from the Club. Steve suggested a $300.00 donation be made. This item will be put on the table to be handled at the next Executive meeting. Merv’s Car of the Month Merv’s car this month was the MGB Burlineette. Doug Unia had the correct guess. 50/50 Draw: Brian Collings won the draw of $51.50. He did not win the extra $5.00 as he was not wearing his name tag. Cathy Gislason made a motion that the Business Part of the meeting be concluded. Se-conded by Al Ramsay. Break Presentation: Brian Collings Choosing the right tires and Classic Car Tires Engine Oil Bible Thanks: Jerrie MacFarlane Club Secretary.
