156 RPM - Robotics Plus Mayhem

Revving into our 2018-2019 season, 156 RPM is moving faster than ever and growing stronger as a team every day! Our team was lucky enough to help the

Fairview Middle School’s FIRST Lego League team during their season. Two of our members, TreyBlystone and Daniel Rutkowski, spent time withthe younger team members, helping themdevelop skills in presenting and basic robotics.

During the fall preseason, our team begantraining new members with the essential skillsfor success. 156 RPM consists of well-seasoned veterans as well as numerous rookies this year.Due to the addition of so many new members, weimplemented a STEAM-based team bondingexercise. We first broke into one mentor group

and three student groups. This decisionproved to be effective at bringing newmembers and veterans together to takeon new roles and develop essentialskills. We coordinated an activity thatchallenged these groups to design, document, build, test, and present amechanism that works with othergroups to transport a golf ball.

This year, Gannon Universitygraciously offered their space for allthe teams in the area to watch thisyear’s international release of theFIRST Robotics Competition in their Waldron Campus Center. Fairview, Collegiate,McDowell, and Harbor Creek attended the event. Students were given the opportunity to

tour some of the engineering majors thatthe University offers. Likewise, teamswere able to intermingle and enjoyrefreshments while watching the FIRSTkick-off event, revealing this year’scompetition theme, Destination: DeepSpace!

156 RPM is excited for this season’scompetitions and we are working hard, since end build is only 4 weeks away!

Senior English Classes Practice Teamwork and Communication

In channeling the ideas presented by Randy Pausch in the book, The Last Lecture, the seniors recently took a day to work on teamwork and communication skills. The students completed the following tasks: a large group game of “survival,” a one on one drawing activity and a mini-group challenge of marshmallow tower construction. Upon completion of the activities, the seniors then reflected on their strengths and weaknesses that they “brought to the table” and how these, can make them marketable employees in the future.

Shakespeare's Othello The AP English Language and Composition students ended the semester with a study of Shakespeare's Othello, the tragic tale of the jealous Moor of Venice. They applied their knowledge of rhetoric gained throughout the course as they analyzed the character Iago's use of rhetoric to manipulate others throughout the play. Additionally, the students brought the play to life by acting out the scenes for their peers in very entertaining skits. It has been a very successful semester!

Photo Club: Zoo Trip

On December 19, Fairview’s Photo Club traveled to the Erie Zoo on a field trip for an up close photo shoot of the zoo’s array of education animals. Photo Club took pictures of these animals in studios and walked around the Zoo for images of the other animals. Students have the opportunity to submit their best photos to the Zoo and potentially be used for advertisements and prints.

Eating on A BudgetEating on a budget is a very important aspect of daily life and is something thateverybody needs to do. It is useful that you evaluate your budget before going grocery

shopping because every dollar in your budget counts. What will help you stay in budget

is looking at what you want to purchase at the grocery store and make a list. This will

allow you to have a good idea or rough estimate of how expensive what you want to buy

will cost. This plan will ultimately help you stay within your budget when grocery

shopping and will allow you to use your money on other expenses that you have which

includes necessities and luxuries.

Do Your ResearchUltimately when shopping for food and groceries, it is important you do your research before

going shopping. Utilize things like flyers, online websites for the stores so you can look for

things like sales, promotions and deals. It’s also good so you can compare grocery stores and

see who has the better prices. In saying this you do not want to get worse products if their

cheaper but it is always good to look at who has the better deals.

Reduce Eating OutAt the end of the day everybody loves eating out, realistically though there are not manybenefits. Financially, eating out can cost you a lot of money because restaurants are

expensive and charge a lot for meals. Also fast food places are expensive in a different

way. Although meals might not be expensive at fast food places like McDonalds, Burger

King and others, it is important that you do not find yourself going to fast food places

excessively because it will cost a lot and you don't even know it. A good amount to eat

out a week is 1 or 2 times maximum. This will allow you to spend less money eating out

and saving money. Not only is eating fast food financially non-beneficial but it is also

not healthy for you. If people spend more time eating at home and making dinner it will

cost them and less and also be way more nutritional for them.

Eating on a Budget

Here’s how to save big on your next grocery store visit.

How-To Eat on a Budget! by Georgia Nicewonger on January 8

Healthy food is often times synonymous with expensive habits--but it doesn’t have to be. Itis no secret that one of the hardest downfalls to healthy eating is the cost and time, butwith the right planning and the right budget, it does not have to be a hassle. Below, I’vecompiled a list of some of the best tips to help aid in your tight grocery budgets:

1. Plan Your Meals

When it comes to saving money at the grocery store, planning is essential. Chooseone day to plan a meals for the upcoming week. Also, be sure to scan your fridge andcabinets for food you already have--some items are like hidden gems when you'reon a budget. When you're at the grocery store, only buy what you know you're goingto use.

Page 21: Jan Tiger Pride - fairviewschools.org · compiled a list of some of the best tips to help aid in your tight grocery budgets: 1. Plan Your Meals à When it comes to saving money at

Here’s the bottom line: Plan your meals for the week and make a grocery list.Only buy what you're sure you will use, and check out what you already havein your cupboards first.

2. Stick to Your Grocery List

Once you have planned your meals for the week, make a list and stick to it. Itcan be very easy to get sidetracked in stores and purchase unnecessaryitems which can lead to an expensive check when you hit the registers. As agood rule of thumb, stick to the perimeter of the store you are in becausethis is where the most wholesome foods are located. In addition, there arenow many apps available to make shopping on your list much simpler.

Here’s the bottom line: Make a list and stick to it. Shop the perimeter of thestore first and maybe even try to use an app to keep your list handy.

3. Cook At Home

If you are fortunate enough to have the resources to cook at home, then doit. Making food at home gives you all the benefits: you’ll be putting extra cashin your pockets, and you will also know exactly what is being put into yourfood.

Here’s the bottom line: If you think that you do not have enough time to cookfor yourself--you're wrong! Some people prepare their meals on theweekend and others cook one meal at a time, but either way, you will havethe satisfaction of saving money by cooking at home rather than eating outevery single night.

4. Cook Large Portions and Use Your Leftovers

Cooking larger meals can save you both time and money. Leftovers are agreat benefit to cooking at home because you can use your surplus ofgoodies for lunches or dinners throughout the week.

Page 22: Jan Tiger Pride - fairviewschools.org · compiled a list of some of the best tips to help aid in your tight grocery budgets: 1. Plan Your Meals à When it comes to saving money at

Here’s the bottom line: Cook larger meals from inexpensive ingredients anduse these food throughout the week. Items like stir-fries, salads, and burritosare great options for leftovers.

5. Buy in Bulk

Buying foods in larger quantities can actually save a lot of money. Grainssuch as rice, barley, and oats are all available in bulk and can be kept instorage for a long time. This is also true for beans, lentils and dried fruit.

Here's the bottom line: Several foods are available in bulk for a lower price. They stay fresh for a long time in sealed containers, and can be used in avariety of healthy and inexpensive dishes.

What Do I Do Now?

You do not have to break the bank to eat well. With these tips you now have the tools tocreate a tight budget and know how to stick to it. Junk food costs you twice--think of themedical bills, and yearly checkups that can ensue do to poor health choices. Even if healthyeating seems more expensive, it could be well worth it down the line. After all, you reallycan’t put a price on good health.

TIGER TALK Buying vs Leasing a Vehicle

While considering buying a car, there are many things you have to consider. Do you want to lease a car or buy it? What special features do you want included? Do you want an SUV or a car? How much are the monthly payments going to be? The questions go on and on, but when it comes down to purchasing or leasing a vehicle, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

The whole point of being a salesman is to sell the product. Salesman are able to read customers like a book. They could careless about what anybody says, their main goal is to get you to buy. For example, if a customer is uncertain about purchasing a vehicle, the car salesman may allow them to take it home for a night to get a feel for it. Bringing the new car home will only make the customer realize how much more they want the vehicle, hence why the car salesman encourages the customer to bring it home for a night. Car salesman make commission, which means if you don’t buy, they don’t get money. They will do everything in their power to get you to purchase a vehicle before leaving the lot.

What is leasing?

Leasing is paying money each month for a car that you are basically “renting.” While leasing a car, the car is still in the lenders name. You pay the depreciation over the time you are leasing the car as well as other fees and interests. Most people will lease a car for two to three years, but you may also be able to negotiate contracts with the dealer. Once your lease is up, you have the option to buy out the car or turn around and lease another. Often times, people will jump into another lease into a newer car but if you have the chance to buy out the car you leased first for a good price, then do so.

What is Buying/Financing?

While buying a car, you are paying the entire cost of the car using cash, financing, or the value of your trade-off. Along with the full cost of the car, that will also include a down payment and an auto loan. After purchasing or financing a car, until the car is completely paid off, the lender holds on to the title of the car until you completely pay off the final cost. After that, you will officially own the vehicle. Buying a car always seems like the right thing to do but it all depends on what suits you best. If you want to save money in the long run, buying a car and getting it all paid off as soon as possible will help you save. You can then keep the car for as many years as possible before having to purchase a new car.

Pros of Leasing a Car: - Lower Monthly Payments - Warranty Coverage - Maintenance Coverage - Smaller Down Payment

Cons of Leasing A Car - No Ownership - Limited mileage - No cash towards next vehicle purchase - End costs of lease can be expensive - Gap insurance might be required

Pros of Buying a Car - Ownership - Unlimited mileage - Trade in for cash towards the next car - No payments once loan is paid off

Cons of Buying a Car - Paying interest on the

entire loan balance - Pay more in sales tax - Requires a down payment - Warranty will run out eventually
