Winter Weather ManEmory Pence is everywhere at Green Turtle Bay. Sometimes you’ll see him at our Welcome Center at the entrance to the resort, or cleaning the indoor and outdoor pools in the morning, or just he and wife Suzy hanging out of Pier 6, the home of “Station 10”, named after the Indianapolis fire station where he spent much of his career. Along with being “everywhere,” Emory also pens a weather report during the off-season. It started as a personal email to a few friends on Pier 6. But, others became aware of it, and wanted their morning dose of GTB waterfront weather as both boat oriented update as well as a reminder that dock-life relaxation beckons us boat-ward as soon as temperatures rise to a consistent comfort level. Along with current air and water temperatures, Emory always adds a tidbit of interesting information to his report, sometimes with colorful language, such as when describing that atrocity of nature… snow.
Here’s a recent Emory report from December 20th: “It is 59 out front, and windy out of the south at about 13 and gusting to 22. The water temp. is 49 out here and the lake level is 355.36 and is dropping back down to winter pool (354.00). Their forecast is for the temp. to get up to about 60 and then start dropping about midday to around 33 tonight, with the high to be about 36 for a high tomorrow. The lead singer of Iron Maiden has a day job as a Boeing 757 pilot. Stay dry and warm, Em.”

Happy New Year. Welcome 2020. So, I am sitting here at my computer counting the days to Spring. According to my calculations, there are a mere 79 days, or around 10½ weeks, left until Spring. Let’s all try to avoid SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder, this winter. SAD makes us feel bummed out, grumpy, in a funk, feeling blue, & depressed. We can lift our funky mood by going outside, moving, & embracing winter. Exposure to outdoor light, even when it’s cloudy, helps to balance serotonin & melatonin which lifts our mood & spirit. So, get outside & embrace winter.
The annual CYC Christmas & New Year’s Eve parties were loads of fun. It is always great to see & visit with all our fellow CYC members, fellow boaters, & neighbors at these annual events. Pictures from the Christmas party can be found on the VUE Magazines Facebook page. Our CYC is closed in January for its annual face lift so NOTHING is going on in January! I keep wanting to say “Ugh” but I am not! Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina is open, so you could always rent a condo & enjoy all that nature has to offer this winter.
On to our calendar of events for February & March, although exact dates are not finalized yet. The next Board meeting will be February 8th at 9am at the Commonwealth Yacht Club. If you have any event suggestions contact Commodore Sally West. The annual Mid Winter’s Blues party is scheduled for February 8th at CYC. I can’t wait. The Valentine’s party will be on February 15th. Treat your sweetheart to a romantic weekend by renting a Green Turtle Bay condo & attend the Valentine’s party enjoying a delicious dinner & dance the evening away. March 2nd begins the Spring Spa hours & I did say Spring! March 7th is the CYC Board meeting at 9am at the CYC. March 14th is the LBL Ultra Run in Grand Rivers. March 14th is also CYC’s annual St. Patrick’s Day party. Shelby Sparks has scheduled the first Spring Sailing Series race for April 11th, which is something to look forward to.

Well, no offense to Mr. Curtis, but years do matter especially this time of the year. Feeling one’s age is quite relevant especially with “little ones” who come to visit Nana and Papa for Christmas. As for the wrinkles, well, more seem to creep up each year. Victoria, my four year old granddaughter, reminded me of those elements of time when she asked me this week WHY I had those “cracks” around by eyes.
As for the “Spirit” concept, Mr. Garfield was certainly referring to that part of us that appreciates each day and finds a daily element of excitement as when seen through the eyes of a child. However, in my case with a house full of family, the other type of “Spirits” have sometimes enabled me to complete multi tasks of washing clothes, giving baths, answering numerous questions, changing diapers, finding lost toys, etc., at a crazy pace.
Anyway, as Father Time continues to march on and issue in a New Year, always remember that our Heavenly Father loves all of His children regardless of their ages or wrinkles. Further, His Guiding Spirit will certainly watch over all of us here in Green Turtle Bay during this next year. Best Wishes Always for a happy and safe 2020
