Pastor’s Corner

Through the church the wisdom of

God in its rich variety might now be

made known…Ephesians 3:10

(from the reading for Epiphany)

On January 25, St. Francis’ will hold its annual meet-

ing. That doesn’t sound particularly exciting, does it? It

is, however, an event to look forward to. Yes, we will

conduct church business – we will adopt a budget for

2015, elect Bishop’s Committee members and Diocesan

delegates. But more than that, we will celebrate the ac-

complishments of 2014.

We will look back and review what we have done on

behalf of God’s people, thanks to God working in our

lives. We will rejoice at what is giving us new life and

strength, laugh at our missteps, and describe what we per-

ceive as God’s path for us in 2015. We will (to use St.

Paul’s words, above) look at how through St. Francis’

Church the wisdom of God in its rich variety has been

made known.

The annual meeting is a celebration of our common

life, past, present, and future. And, of course, since we

are the people of St. Francis’ there will also be plenty of

good food. You won’t want to miss it.

Upcoming Events

Y’All Come!

The weekend of January 17th and 18th is going to be a great one for St. Francis’.

SOUPER BOWL Sunday at the Lodge on Sunday after 10:15 a.m. worship. For this

youth-group sponsored event, delicious soup and bread are served and a free will offering is

asked, but not required. We have very few fund-raising events at St. Francis’ and are fond of this

one. The youth have chosen for the money to be given to Heifer International and Project Peanut

Butter Project.

Wait, there’s more! While we are eating delicious, simple soups, Michael Booker will teach Adult Forum on the topic of Food in the Bible. Sounds like a great day!

worship. It’s a time to celebrate our accomplishments in 2014 and look ahead to

2015.

We’ll elect the following people to serve as Diocesan delegates:

Rich Mayfield Arlene Underwood Kyra Jordan (alternate)

We’ll also adopt the 2015 budget; see the article about the budget in this issue

of The Chalice. Please plan on attending the meeting. The canons require a quor-

um to conduct our business.

Request for Reports, Please

As noted, St. Francis’ Annual Meeting will take place on January 25th. In part,

this is a celebration of all that we accomplished in 2014, especially within our minis-

tries. This is the time to thank, to recognize, and list the accomplishments of differ-

ent ministries in our parish. If you are in charge of a ministry group, a committee,

etc., please write a report from your committee and send to Pastor Sally by January

16th. The Annual Meeting booklet takes quite a while to prepare and we need those

reports! Whether your committee is one that focuses on worship, community ser-

vice, or social groups, we need to hear from you. Please be sure to submit your re-

port to Pastor Sally or to Barbi Click by the 16th.

From the Deacon

It has been a month since I was first welcomed to St. Francis’ to serve as your

Deacon. These past few weeks have gone by very quickly. I appreciate for the

warm and hearty welcome that all have shown me.

One of the first things that attracted me to St. Francis’ was the people. I am so

happy that I was led to this congregation. I have listened as you expressed concern

for one anther and also for those whom you serve in your outreach ministries.

You’ve shown love beyond yourselves by welcoming and feeding the stranger at the

Trinity hot lunch ministry, extending compassion to the lonely as you sang Christ-

mas carols and songs at Marymount Manor Senior Living facility, and caring for the

sick through prayers, your cards, calls and visits. This is just a portion of the many,

many ways in which your actions bring the love of Christ into the lives of those

around you. Being the hands and feet of Christ in the community of Eureka, this di-

ocese and the world is clearly important to you for I have observed the spirit and sin-

cerity with which you approach your ministries. Yes, the month has gone by quickly

and you all have been very, very busy!

I look forward to continuing to get to know each of you, hearing your stories,

working along side of you in your ministries and sharing with you as we together

study scripture and worship God with praise and thanksgiving. This is a new and

exciting journey for all of us and I am grateful for the opportunity to be traveling on

this adventure alongside each one of you.

Yours in Christ,

Deacon Rebecca

Eureka Food

Pantry Needs

Because of your generosity, the red wagon for the local Food Pantry continues to be full-to-overflowing. Many of our neigh-bors continue to need assistance getting through each month with enough food for their families. Items that are filling and nourish-ing along with fresh foods that our abundant St. Francis’ garden could provide in the summer are primary needs.

However, with the holiday sea-son upon us and our thoughts turn to traditional foods, special good-ies, "comfort foods" in the cold months......let’s also consider some of the following: canned pumpkin for pies, cookie mixes, chocolates, packaged cookies, cake mixes, col-orful holiday candies, etc. And to go with these...... hot chocolate pack-ages, coffee, teas. These may be items just not pos-sible to enjoy while on a tight budget.

As always, all non-perishable foods are welcomed and distrib-uted - from one small can to large packages. Paper items (tissues, TP, etc.) and toiletries (soaps, shampoos, sanitary supplies) are so helpful as food stamps do not apply to these. Thank you for your continued kindness and car-ing to our community.

Recipe of the Month

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups cooked cauliflower (I use frozen, cooked until tender, in the microwave)

1 cup sour cream (low fat works here, too)

3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (full-fat works best)

3 green onions, finely chopped

3 -6 slices crumpled cooked bacon or 3 -6 slices turkey bacon

Salt and pepper

Directions:

Pre-heat oven to 350.

Chop cooked cauliflower into very small pieces.

Mix sour cream, 1/2 of the green onions, 1/2 of the cheese, 1/2 of the bacon, and salt

and pepper to taste in medium bowl.

Stir in the cauliflower.

Place in medium baking dish and sprinkle remaining cheese and bacon on top.

Bake for 20 minutes.

Sprinkle the remaining green onions on top just before serving.
