The first"source is a series of inscriptions which were copied in November 1934 by Mrs. Frank A. Suter, Mrs. W. H. Pearce, and Mrs. A. L. Latham of the General Mordecai Gist Chapter, N.S.D.A.R. The typescript was placed in filing Case A at the Maryland Historical Society. They copied all of the inscriptions they could read because the cemetery was to be moved since a new highway to Philadelphia might be built over the land. Entries from this source are entered with no other indication of source. The second source is William N. Wilkins' "Early Baltimore City Burial grounds and Their Interment Records, 1834-1840," found at the Maryland Historical Society. A typical entry gives name, sex, age, cause of death, burial in the week ending a given date, and the cemetery where buried. Entries from this source are indicated by (W). The symbol "b/w/e" means "buried week ending." In transcribing these inscriptions, the names have been alphabetized, except for grouping husbands and wives together, and the data has been presented in a condensed format that does not omit any relevant details. Wilkins indicates that in 1822 St. Patrick's Cemetery was at Wolfe & Lombard. In 1850 the cemetery was on Philadelphia Road. Immigrant Ancestors of Marylanders , as Found in Local Histories .By Bill and Martha Reamy. Pipe Creek Press (358 pp., indexed, paper; $40.00), the book has several purposes: The first was tohelp researchers specifically pinpoint immigrant ancestors.

The second purpose of the book was to provide a partialindex to many worthy, out-of-print, unindexed Maryland sourcerecords. Although the entries are undocumented, they are briefand researchers should follow up by obtaining a print of theoriginal article. Most contain extensive additional data on thefamily.

A typical entry reads: JOHN JACOB BALTZELL, from Alsace,Germany in middle of last century, during the Seven Years' Warthere. He settled at Philadelphia and c.1750 located inFrederick, MD. He came with his brother Charles, who served inthe Revolutionary War, a major in the German regiment of MD line.6TH:317— 18. Of course, many entries are longer.

This reviewer has already found in the book a helpful clueto one of the families he has been researching.

This book is a continuation of several other books ofnewspaper abstracts, and fills the gap between similar books ofabstracts for the years 1786 to 1815 and 1820 to 1840. Marriagesand deaths, legal notices, business advertisements, and noticesof insolvent debtors create a picture of life on what used to bethe frontier of Maryland, but by this time was becoming wellsettled. As with other books in this series, the numbers in theindex refer to issues of newspapers, and not to pages. If yourancestors ventured west of the branches of the Patapsco, you willwant to have this book. /s/ Robert Barnes

THE VACATION:TRAVELING FOR RESEARCH OR JUST VISITING RELATIVES

by Eleanor Lukanich

The vacation can be a golden opportunity or a disaster; itwill be what you make of it.

First and foremost is preparation. Don't wait until you getto your destination to decide where to go and what to look for.Have a plan.

If you are traveling strictly for research, travel light. You are going to gather information. There is no need to take allof your genealogical data, notes, records, forms, and charts.Evaluating and sorting out the data you gather can be done whenyou come home. If you are really travelling light, don't take atypewriter or computer, especially if you will be researching insmall towns. Most libraries don't have the room for you to usethis equipment.... Many small town libraries do not have copy

Page 24: Jan. 1834 (W). 1839 (W). - Baltimore County Genealogy ...baltimoregenealogysociety.org/notebook_archive/1994.pdf · City Burial grounds and Their Interment Records, 1834-1840," found

machines for public use, but if you need to have copiesreproduced, they will take an order and mail the materials toyou. Place your order while you are there and pay for the copiesand postage.

Study maps in connection with your itinerary.. Find yourdestinations in specific towns, and mark them on a map. If youare not driving your own car to your destination, plan to rent acar when you get there. It will be cheaper and will save time.

Find out where the record centers are before you leave home.Is there a local historical or genealogical society? Libraries(and even college libraries) may contain a lot of information onlocal history.

Find out the hours and days the research centers are open soyou can avoid arriving in a town on the day the repository isclosed. Try to make your route a continuous line, avoiding back-tracking, so that you begin and end at the same place.

Identify all sources of information used. Keep all datagathered at a particular library or repository together in anenvelope with the name and address of the library on it.

Be sure to take plenty of pencils. You do not need to travel First Class. Stay at a Bed and

Breakfast or Motel. Keep your costs down as much as possible.Spend some time in the towns where your forebears lived, and soakup the atmosphere. If you can find the schools or churches theyattended take pictures; if you locate an ancestral home, be sureto get the present owner's permission before photographing it.

Remember that not everyone cares about genealogy. Becourteous, patient, and friendly. Don't demand service orinformation. You are an outsider and a guest.

If you are visiting relatives take a notebook. Always writedown who told you anything, and try to visit the older relatives.Write down everything you are told, and if people are mentionedof whom you are never heard, write their names down and try tofind out more about them.

Carry your notebook everywhere. Who cares if you areremembered as "Crazy Aunt Nellie or Uncle Joe with theNotebook." At least you will be remembered.

Bibliographies

Maryland and Delaware Genealogies; A Bibliography of Books AboutMaryland and Delaware Families. By Donald Odell Virdin. Bowie:Heritage Books, Inc. 1993. Pp. 114. Indexed. $20.00Pennsylvania Genealogies and Family Histories; A Bibliography ofBooks About Pennsylvania Families. By Donald Odell Virdin.Bowie: Heritage Books, Inc. 1992. Pp. 269. Indexed. $33.00

Mr. Virdin has compiled two bibliographies that should beof some value to family history researchers. The Maryland andDelaware bibliography contains names and addresses of historicaland genealogical organizations for the two states. The Pennsyl-vania bibliography gives names and addresses of major repositor-ies where the books can be found.

The Maryland and Delaware volume lists about 800 titles, while the Pennsylvania book contains about 2800 titles. Eachvolume contains an index of family names mentioned in titles thatare not listed in the text under that name.

Perhaps no bibliography can ever be truly complete, but asurvey of the Maryland volume reveals some omissions: The Dorsey,Dorsey and Nimmo study of The Dorsey Family is not listed.Newman's original volume of Anne Arundel Gentry (1933) islisted, but the three volumes of Anne Arundel Gentry: Revisedand Augmented are missing.

Nevertheless both volumes should be helpful for locating newsources to be checked.

Guide to Research in Baltimore City and County, 2nd ed. By RobertBarnes. Westminster: Family Line Publications, 1993. Pp. 151.Softcover; Indexed; Illus. $18.00.

Baltimore City and County researchers who purchased thefirst edition of this guide know how useful it is; this reviewerpurchased a copy and it is one of just a few books that is usedagain and again to located everything from maps to manuscriptcollections. Mr. Barnes has revised his 1989 best seller andadded many new features to coordinate the wealth of genealogicalinformation that has been produced in the past several years. Newsections include funeral home records, computers in genealogy, anupdated bibliography of sources and a section on note taking andassessing records.

Anyone with an interest in doing genealogical research inBaltimore City and County should add this book to his or hercollection. Mr. Barnes has been researching both personally andprofessionally in these areas for over thirty years, and his

knowledge of the records and sources is unrivaled. Many localresearchers (including this reviewer1) have benefitted from Mr.Barnes" advice and experience, and now, with this book, manyother genealogists will have success in the records ofBaltimore. /s/ Patricia Dockman Anderson

Marylanders to Carolina; Migration of Marylanders to NorthCarolina and South Carolina Prior to 1800. By Henry C. Peden, Jr.Westminster: Family Line Publications, 1994. Pp. vi, 225.Indexed. $15.00.

Migrations of early families are hard to trace, especiallysince they often lived in several counties or states beforesettling down. Nicodemus Barnes was born not 20 miles frombaltimore. He claimed to have served in the Revolution, and thenmoved to NC, then to Chester'Co., SC. He moved on to Roan Co.,TN, and by 1843 was in Clinton Co., KY.

Genealogists will be happy to have this volume to help themtrace those members of their families who "went to Carolina."Land records, pension applications, Quaker records, and state andcounty histories were combed to find the names of those who wentsouth, whether for religious, political, economic or otherreasons.

Passengers and Ships Prior to 1684; Penn's Colony; Volume I. ByWalter Lee Sheppard, Jr. (Publications of the Welcome Society ofPennsylvania, Number 1, 1985). Repr.: Bowie: Heritage Books,1992. Pp. 245, Indexed, Maps. $21.00.

Immigration books are always welcome, and Mr. Sheppard'svolume is a scholarly examination of a number of lists originallycompiled by Marion R. Balderston, Francis James Dallett, HannahBenner Roach, Marion Bunting, and Mr. Sheppard. The passengerlists are extensively annotated making them invaluable forreconstructing the lives of early Pennsylvania settlers. So manyMarylanders trace their ancestry to these early arrivals that thebook is an important addition to libraries.

Hiaht-Hite Families of Sussex and Surry Counties, VA. from about1634. By Robert E. Wallace. Bowie: Heritage Books, Inc., 1993.Pp. vi, 182.

This book deals with the over 1300 descendants of John Hitewho came to VA in 1656, and includes information of relatedfamilies of Acres, Augusta, Bacon, Chambly, Cotton, Demastus,Duffer, Gee, Hopkins, Hudson, Hurlow, Johnson, Jones, Maben,McDaniel, Neblett, Sheffield, Simmons, Smith, Thompson, Wallace,Wells, Wilkensons, Willhites, and Ystrom. There is an index tothe material on pp. 1-60, but beginning on p. 115 is a Chronologyof early Rights containing information from land records, taxlists, census records, parish records, and wills not only fromVirginia, but from georgia, and North Carolina as well. It isunfortunate that this material is not indexed, because the book

A typical entry gives the lineof descent followed by the sources. Although the descent containsfew dates or places, interested descendants can reconstruct thepedigree from the sources given. Although only 13 immigrants toMaryland are included, a number of the settlers in Virginia andPennsylvania had children or grandchildren who came to Maryland. This reviewer has been working on the Mauduit family that settledin Prince George's County in the early 18th century. He wasdelighted to see that a collateral branch of the family containedthe progenitors of actor Peter Lawford. Other families withMaryland connections discussed are: Arundell, Bladen, Boteler,Brent, Calvert, Codd, Digges, Ellicott, Fowke, Gerard, Gill,Gorsuch, Lovelace, Magruder, Mainwaring, Neale, Sewall,Tilghman, Wolseley and Wynne. The royal descents of MarmadukeWyvill, Mary Johanna Somerset, and Frances White Wells are notincluded. This book is a definite "must have" for anyoneinterested in European ancestry. .

The second title, or rather group of titles, is a reprintof the Marquis of Ruvigny and Raineval's The Blood Royal ofBritain (The Tudor Roll) and The Plantaqenet Roll of the BloodRoyal (The Clarence, Exeter, Essex, and Mortimer-Percy Volumes).Balto.: GPC, 1994. 5 vols. Pp. 632, 730, 842, 698, and 650.Indexed. $230.00 until 30 June; $235.00 thereafter. ($7.00 p/h).[Each volume can be purchased separately].

The compiler brought out his first volume in 1903. The lastappeared in 1911, and contains information on 50,000 descendantsof Edward III, with over 300,000 lines of descent. The projectedseries was never completed, but the five volumes that did appearare probably the "most extensive of the various attempts to traceall of the lines of descent of any portion of English royalty..."Among the Maryland families included are Digges, Jerningham,Markland, Somerset, and Wyvill. In each volume the lines ofdescent are traced first in a series of pedigree charts bringingthe descents down to the early or mid 19th century, and then in aseries of narratives giving full particulars of the families.

Persons interested in royal genealogy and libraries willwant to have these books.

JOTTINGS FROM THE EDITOR'S OWN NOTEBOOK

The Maryland State Archives has a new index on the "WordCruncher:" an index of heads of families in the 1870 census ofBaltimore City and County. This index was made available to theArchives by the publishers of a forthcoming book, Index to the1870 Census of Maryland. The index shows the full name, age, birthplace, ward or district of residence, page number andmicrofilm number where the full family entry can be examined.

Like most researchers, the editor quickly punched in thelast names of families he was searching. In a few cases he couldnot find the individual sought. One problem was solved by keyingin the first name of the person sought — a native of Portugal.Sure enough the name was found: not Anthony Fratis, but AnthonyFraley, birthplace Portugal.

Another missing ancestor, William Swam, was found by typingin Wiseburg, the Post Office of the 6th District, and thereappeared the name: William "Swim." (Swim was one of the newspelling variations not checked) .

Using this remarkable index, it would be possible to call upall the people who lived in a certain district, who were born ina particular place, or who had a certain first name.

The genealogical books sent to the Maryland HistoricalSociety by the George Peabody Library are being catalogued andstored temporarily on new shelving of the MHS. It is hoped thatwithin a few months these books will all be catalogued andbrought down to the main floor to be merged with the collection. These new books include many titles dealing with Southern and NewEngland source records.

The editor has found a way to combine an old love(genealogy) with a new one (post card collecting) . For some timehe has been collecting post cards with flags and coats of arms.Recently however, he has expanded his collection to include postcards of English parish churches, so that if he finds one of theparish of origin for one of his own, or a client's, family, hecan xerox it for his genealogy files. Perhaps surprisingly, black and white photographs of the early 1920 's and 1930 's aremore suitable for this purpose than modern color photographs.

to the Commissioners of Tax of Baltimore County:Gentlemen: These few lines is to inform you of the losses I

have sustained since the last assessment of my own property - andthe property I have under my care as Guardian to. the heir ofElisha Sellers (deceased) lying in Patapsco Neck. As for my ownis a negro man who died a few months past, between 14 and 45years of age. The loss of the Estate of Elisha Sellers is veryconsiderably destroyed by the Enemy, they have burnt all theImprovements that was of any value, they destroyed by fire alarge brick dwelling house, a large brick barn, and shed, a brickstable, a granary, corn house & injured several small houses. From the [least?] calculation I do not think can be replaced forsix thousand dollars at the present time.

Gentlemen, I hope you will take this in consideration as ithas rendered the plantation Entire useless.

Yrs. with respect, Bickman Johnson.

Abstracts of the Inventories and Accounts of the PrerogativeCourt of Maryland: Libers 37A, 37B, 37C, 38A, 38B, 39A, 39B, 39C:1715-1718. Compiled by V. L. Skinner, Jr. Westminster: FamilyLine Publications, 1994. Pp. iv, 103. Indexed. $11.00.

This is another in the continuing series of abstracts ofearly probate records made available to researchers by thecompiler. Although it is always best to* consult the originalrecords, these abstracts contain an every name index to all thosewho appear in the originals, making it easy to trace individualsin this time period. Marriage references are frequently found, not only among the executrices or administratrices of thedeceased, but in the list of debtors or creditors also. In the1716 account of the estate of William Cotter of Anne ArundelCounty, payment was made David Gray, husband of a PenelopePersons. This would not have been found if Skinner had onlyabstracted the names of the deceased, and those who settled hisestate. The book is well worth the price.

Parceling Out Land in Baltimore, 1632-1796. By Garrett Power.(Reprinted from the Maryland Historical Magazine, 87 (1992): 453-66, 88 (1993): 151-80. Baltimore: The Maryland HistoricalSociety, n.d. Pp. 56. Illus. $5.00.

This well researched narrative te ls the story of theparceling out of the land grants in the original Baltimore Townfrom survey to the first building. The narrative is carried downto 1796 when Baltimore Town was incorporated as a city, andincludes biographical sketches of the early settlers andspeculators. If the book has a fault it is the lack of an index, but students of Baltimore history will <find it an excellentaddition to their libraries.

Inhabitants of Kent County, Maryland, 1637-1787. By Henry C.Peden, Jr. Westminster: Family Line Publications, 1994. Pp. vi,272. Indexed. $19.50.

Like Mr. Peden's earlier works on the inhabitants ofBaltimore and Cecil Counties, this book is made up of lists ofnames drawn from list of patentees, tax lists, court proceedings, vestry proceedings, revolutionary war records, and other sources, resulting in a volume containing hundreds (if not thousands) ofnames. The Assessment List of 1783 is included, with entriesarranged by tract names with names of owners following, like allof the compiler's books, this is highly recommended.

Hisfirst wife was Miss Blackston of Baltimore who died childless. His second wife was Miss Mary Greenland of Harford [Co.] who borehim 19 children - two sets of twins and one of triplets. Of the19 only six are living: Mrs. George Cullum, Mrs. D. Spencer, Mrs.Henry Lackey, Mrs. J. T. Mitchell, Mrs. James McCommons ofHarford Co., and Mrs. Alex. McNeill of Philadelphia. Mr. Bunce, when quiteyoung, learned the coopering trade in Baltimore after which hecame to Harford and had lived in the same neighborhood for over52 years. He was a man of iron constitution and of more thanordinary ability. He was noted for his strict integrity andunvarying truthfulness. He had received merely an ordinary schooleducation, but was a great reader and thinker and was possessedof a prodigious memory. It was often remarked that he had neverattempted to talk upon a subject unless he understood it.

About six years ago, Mr. bunce joined the Trinity Episcopalchurch at Churchville, and in his zeal shamed many a youngerChristian. He would walk all the way to church as long as he wasable and he died the death of the righteous - a beautifuldeathbed. Mr. Bunce left numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Like the preceding volumes in Mr. Skinners' most excellentseries, this volume helps to create a fuller picture of theestate records left by Maryland decedents — whether or not theydied testate. The Introduction explains the symbols used and theformat of the text, which includes not only the names of thedeceased and the accountants, but also the names of everyonenamed in the record: indentured servants, debtors, creditors, and next of kin. The West Family Data Base, Vol. 1. By Howard E. West, Jr. 1991,Repr.: Bowie: Heritage Books, Inc., 1994. Pp. 350. Indexed; softcover .

The records of the West family gathered for this data basespan the thirteenth century to the present, and have beencollected from census, military, tax, and probate files, as wellas family Bibles. Mr. West has arranged his work in a clearchronological format with categories for each person that includethe date of record, and, if known, the names of spouses, siblings, parents, the record type and a comment on the type ofrecord and where it was found. If there is a weak area in thiswork, it lies in the fact that the reader is not given a fullcitation to the source of the record. For example, the entry forEdmund West 1784 is a probate record found in Edmond County,Virginia, but the location, book and page number were notincluded. These omissions will cause researchers additional workas they will have to trace the records from the clues in thisvolume to validate these lines.

Aside from this, the compiler has done an admirable job inpulling together all of the information he could find on the Westfamily. His data base also includes fifty-seven family charts, twelve maps, a bibliography, and a full" name index. This bookwill undoubtedly become a well used source of information on theWest family and their migration from England to America.
