MANILA, Philippines — Manny Pacquiao’s camp says there is no economic sense in setting up a bout with Floyd Mayweather on May 5 after the unbeaten American publicly challenged the Filipino cham-pion via Twitter.

Pacquiao’s fi nancial adviser Michael Koncz told The Associ-ated Press on Thursday that a 45,000-seat boxing arena being built in Las Vegas won’t be fi n-

The ThreatBy Cal Thomas

LISBON, Portugal — When the Re-publican presidential candidates tire of bashing each other, perhaps they will start addressing the expansion of radical Islam. Only Rick Santorum raised the issue in last Saturday’s de-bate in New Hampshire.

Next door in Spain, two new satel-lite TV stations recently signed on. They won’t be airing “Judge Judy,” but instead are broadcasting Islamic theology and political propaganda. It was not coincidental that the launch of Islamic TV in Spain coincided with Christmas. One of the early broadcasts featured a story, from Islam’s perspec-tive, on the Virgin Mary and the birth of Jesus. Not surprisingly, it differs signifi cantly from the biblical account with which even secular Americans are familiar.

One channel is called Hispan TV and its program content is produced in Iran. That should be warning enough. One of their shows is called “Debate Abierto,” or “Open Debate.” The Iranian government sponsors the program, which, according to Soeren Kern, a senior fellow at the Strategic Studies Group in Madrid, “will focus on spreading Shiite Islam” in Spain and Latin America.

The second channel is Cordoba

ISLAMTHE WORLDWILL DOMINATE

Television, which Kern writes, “is the brainchild of the radical Saudi cleric Abdul Aziz al-Fawzan, the spiritual mentor for one of the Islamists who carried out the terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001.”

Kern notes that al-Fawzan has a reputation for hating Christianity and marginalizing women. He also preach-es against the United States and be-lieves “slavery is a part of Islam; slavery is part of Jihad and Jihad will remain as long as there is Islam.”

For many Muslims, Cordoba, a city in southern Spain, remains an impor-

tant symbol of Islamic conquest. It was once the capital of the Islamic Emirate of al-Andalus, which ruled most of the Iberian Peninsula more than a millen-nium ago. Cordoba TV is owned by the Foundation for the Message of Islam and backed by the Saudi royal family. Its aim, according to Kern, is to propa-gate...” the extremist Wahhabi sect of Islam.” The same right-wing sect that prints textbooks calling Jews descen-dants of apes and pigs and Christians cross worshippers and polytheists.

One might reasonably conclude that the goal of these TV stations is to

establish a presence in post-Christian Spain with political goals that even Spanish secularists won’t like. That Iran is also promoting Spanish broad-casts in Latin American countries is another indication of how radical Is-lam is advancing worldwide, fueled substantially by what the West pays for their oil.

What is the Obama administra-tion’s response to the advance of radical Islam? It seeks negotiations with the Taliban and apparently as a “confi dence-building gesture” is con-templating the release from Guanta-namo Bay prison of Mullah Moham-med Fazl in exchange for promises of peace talks and the chance to open a political offi ce in Qatar. Fazl, a for-mer commander of the Taliban army, is accused of slaughtering thousands of Shiite Muslims, is said to enjoy a close relationship with al-Qaida and other terrorist groups and is involved in drug traffi cking. He is also consid-ered a “high risk” Guantanamo de-tainee and a real threat to American forces and U.S. allies should he be re-leased. This and more can be found in last year’s WikiLeaks document dump called the “Guantanamo Bay Files.”

The administration also wants to reach out to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, which it had previously said would not have a major infl uence in that country’s upcoming elections. It now appears Brotherhood candidates will gain signifi cant power in that election to Israel’s detriment.

No gesture will deter the radicals. U.S. gestures demonstrate to radical Islamists America’s weakness and lack of resolve, which they are eager to exploit.

During the Cold War, the United States made effective use of the Voice of America and Radio Liberty to tell the truth to “captive nations.” There are no broadcasting counterweights to what radical Islamists are doing in Spain and Latin America. While America retreats, announcing cuts in defense spending, Islamists advance.

In the film “The Iron Lady,” Meryl Streep speaks the words of Margaret Thatcher: “One of the great problems of our age is that we’re governed by people who care more about feel-ings than they do about thoughts and ideas.”

Radical Islam challenges every idea in which the West believes. The Republican presidential candidates should start talking about their plans to counter, even defeat, it. We can see what the Obama administration is do-ing: nothing.

U.S. Marine as “Person ofthe Year”

The very first award of the Union-Tribune’s Person of the Year goes to the U.S. Marine. The award honors an indi-vidual or category of in-dividuals with San Diego ties.

The U-T says, “We can think of no better way to begin this tradition than by selecting

as our first winner the Marine. Since Sept. 11, 2001, America ha relied on the Marine to keep us safe from terror at home and to take the fight to our enemies abroad, a task our Marines

have handled with immense courage, professionalism and honor.”

VA Announces Changes toEmergency Care Payment Policy

The Department of Veterans Af-fairs announced today a change in regulations regarding payments for emergency care provided to eligible Veterans in non-VA facilities.

“This provision helps ensure eligi-ble Veterans continue to get the emer-gency care they need when VA facili-ties are not available,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.

The new regulation ex-tends VA’s authority to pay for emergency care provided to eligible Vet-erans at non-VA facilities until the Veterans can be safely transferred to a VA medical facility.

More than 100,000 Veterans are estimated to

be affected by the new rules, at a cost of about $44 million annually.

VA operates 121 emergency de-partments across the country, which provide resuscitative therapy and stabilization in life-threatening situ-ations. They operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. VA also has 46 ur-gent care units, which provide care for patients without scheduled appoint-ments who need immediate medical or psychiatric attention.

For more information about emer-gency care in non-VA facilities, visit www.nonvacare.va.gov.

Registration open for largest wheel chair sports event in the world

Registration is open for the 32nd National Veterans Wheelchair Games, the largest annual wheelchair sports event in the world. More than 500 Vet-erans from across the United States, Puerto Rico and Great Britain are ex-pected to compete in the Games, tak-ing place June 25-30, 2012, in Rich-mond, Va. – the site of the very first National Veterans Wheelchair Games held in 1981.

“The National Veterans Wheel-chair Games are an outstanding event that showcases the abilities and deter-mination of Veterans,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K.Shinseki.

“VA is committed to providing world class care to our wounded heroes.”

China’s carrier getting ready for flight ops?

Well, if we need a hint that China’s first aircraft carrier, the ex-soviet Varyag is getting ready for flight op-erations, this might be it. These pic-tures show ex-Varyag’s crew conduct-ing what looks like a FOD sweep of the ship’s flight deck. Remember, we saw a Z-8 helo operating around her flight deck just before her maiden voyage last August. On her last couple of cruises we saw what appeared to be an aircraft fueling truck sitting on her deck. Speaking of interesting things on her flight deck, check out the cam-ouflage trailer with what looks like some sort of satellite or radar antenna on top of it sitting on the deck just aft of the ship’s island.

Early in 2011 the Dr. Oz Show did a special show that highlight-ed women Veterans that were home-less. Some had Post Traumat-ic Stress Dis-order (PTSD) and had been raped or ex-perienced a military sexu-al trauma (MST). It was the kind of show that presented Veterans in an honorable manner and allowed the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to address the fact that many female Veterans fall through the cracks with normal routine VA care; let alone ex-treme cases such as homelessness and PTSD or MST. A VA representative mentioned the action teams in place in Washington, D.C. to study the problem of women Veterans and how they were establishing hotlines, and outreach programs.

As a combat zone Veteran with fi ve deployments to the Middle East supporting the Persian Gulf War, I receive disability compensation and treatment at VA for PTSD and MST. I can tell you fi rst hand that since my re-tirement in 2007 it has been an uphill battle to get the help I need. But I am getting help. Then I stumbled across a fi lm that is going to be released in January 2012, called, “The Invisible War” that is supposed to address MST in particular. I talked to a few people I know in the industry about this, and discovered that one of the Veterans that was interviewed and may appear as a main character is a man that was raped and claims this rape caused him to become a pedophile—which he served criminal prison time for. I am writing this blog in the hopes to pre-empt the hate mail that the VA will receive after the public sees his inter-

view in this fi lm.Yes, MST is a real issue and needs

to be treated, and yes, the VA could be doing a better job, but I do not feel that linking MST to criminal pe-dophiles will do anything to enhance the medical assistance the veterans receive. If anything it will cause the public to revert to the era of Vietnam when people would spit on veterans in public. I would hope the VA would read this blog and be PRO-ACTIVE with a public affairs campaign for TV ads to advocate for the positive assis-tance for MST survivors to get treat-ment.

I am a Veteran. I am proud of my country. The VA is not perfect by any means, but I do not feel it is necessary to embarrass and degrade Veterans who have already suffered MST to be lumped in the same category as crimi-nals who blame MST for their criminal

Non-surgical way to sculpt your bodyPousti Plastic Sur-

gery is pleased and excited to announce the practice’s adop-tion of the innovative CoolSculpting fat removal technology for patients desiring fat removal without the cost and recovery associated with tra-ditional liposuction. Pousti Plastic Sur-gery is one of the fi rst medical and cosmetic surgery practices in the Southern Califor-nia region to offer this breakthrough in non-invasive fat reduction.

CoolSculpting is an exciting and innovative new approach to non-invasive fat reduction. “This tech-nology has demonstrated signifi cant positive results in clinical studies for removing unwanted body fat without the possible risks and recovery of invasive procedures” said Dr. Tom Pousti of Pousti Plastic Surgery in San Diego, California. “This fat-reducing technology is particularly effective in resistant lo-calized areas of the body such as back fat, love han-dles, and isolated belly fat. The CoolSculpting pro-cedure is extremely comfortable and patients are very satisfi ed with the process and results.”

Cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the CoolSculpting technology works by gently cooling unwanted fat cells in the body, in-ducing a natural and controlled elimination of fat

What to expect after the surgery & FAQ

1. Which patients are the bestcandidates?

Ultimately, ideal candidates are active and are at or near their goal weight, but are unable to get rid of stubborn fat with diet and exercise. They should be concerned with specific areas that include stored fat, not concerned with their entire body, but do not consider surgical procedures a solution. The CoolSculpting method is not intended as a weight loss solution.

2. How does the applicator deliver cooling to the fat cells?

The applicator gently holds tissue in the applicator cup grasped between two cooling panels, resembling a vacuum, while extracting body heat from underlying tissue. The skin is monitored through sensors, linked to the control console, built into the machine that control a consistent cooling procedure pattern and provide constant feedback to the physician.

3. How long will my results last?Patients show full results six months after the CoolSculpt-

ing treatment and are expected to last about as long as results from invasive fat cell removal surgeries such as liposuction.

4. Are there any side effects after the treatment? As a non-invasie procedure, the CoolSculpting treatment

allows for immediate return to normal daily activities with no restrictions. Immediately following the treatment, the area may appear red anywhere from the first few minutes to the first few hours, but this is completely along with minimal localized bruis-ing which usually disappears within a few weeks. Some pa-tients may feel a numbing sensation to the treated area lasting up to 8 weeks.

cells. CoolSculpting is based on scientifi c discovery from the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts Gen-eral Hospital in Bos-ton, Massachusetts. The research proved through vast research that fat cells are more susceptible to cold and are selectively, painlessly, and per-manently destroyed.

Several weeks after the procedure, cooled fat cells begin a process called apop-

tosis and start to shrink and disappear. The patient begins to naturally and gradually eliminate cooled fat cells, thereby reducing the thickness of the fat layer in targeted areas of the body.

Unlike other harsh fat reduction or removal procedures, CoolSculpting requires no needles, sur-gery, or recovery periods. During the procedure, a non-invasive applicator delivers precisely controlled cooling to the treatment area. Treatments last be-tween one and two hours, and patients have the op-tion for additional treatments for more substantial effects if desired. Each CoolSculpting procedure re-sults in an undeniable reduction of fat in the treat-ment area, and patients see results as early as three weeks following treatment. The most dramatic re-sults occur over a period of between two and four months in most patients.

Tiger Woods’ private life domi-nated headlines for the best part of 2010, and unjustly so.

One man was making the headlines on and off the course, leaving journalists little time for anyone other than the international golf icon. And the play-ers felt it, too.

There hasn’t been a single player to win more than one major since. Sever-al men have occupied the number one spot in recent times, and sometimes getting there without taking a major. Does this diminish the value of the majors? Does it mean they aren’t as important in terms of ranking points? No, of course not. It just means that ev-eryone wants to be the next Tiger, but no one is quite good enough.

Or maybe they are. Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland is a great young player, and he proved it at this year’s U.S. Open. That one should have been his second. He led the previous ma-jor, the Masters, on the fi nal day, and by four shots, too, but threw his lead away with a disastrous fi nal round to fi nish T15 for the tournament.

At the time, people said McIlroy simply didn’t have what it took to be a major winner. He had the shots, cer-tainly. He had the skill and talent, but he didn’t have it between the ears. Mentally, he wasn’t strong enough.

Those thoughts were quickly dis-pelled as McIlroy banished the regrets of the Masters and shot a 268 aggre-gate score to fi nish 16 under par to in a record breaking victory. It was the victory he should have had at the Mas-ters.

But it showed his critics he really does have what it takes, and when he is on form, he is better than the world, and by a long, long way.

At the time of writing, he is No. 2 in the world rankings, after coming

Tiger’s Private Lifefourth in the WCG-HSBC Champions event in Shang-hai, and he is on the way up. Only Luke Donald of Eng-land stands between him and the number one spot. Donald has a great record in smaller tournaments, but has never hit his best form for the majors, as has been the case with so many other players.

McIlroy will be eagerly awaiting the next major — the Masters in Augusta next April — where he will hope to wipe the slate clean and to take the title he should have taken this year. At just 22, he’s mature

for his age, and with another year under his belt after the biggest throwaway of his career, he know he has what it takes, and he will be confi dent of keeping a cool head throughout the tournament.

If McIlroy takes the lead in any of the majors in 2012, expect him to hand on to it. He might not end up being as prolifi c a major winner as Woods, but he’s certainly going to dominate the next few years.

round performances in the history of basketball and impacts the totality of his NBA contests unlike any other roundball artist alive.

And still, he has received no seri-ous consideration for MVP this year.

3. Otis SmithFor five years now, Otis Smith has

had the main ingredient to a success-ful championship recipe: the NBA’s premiere big man. He has squandered his opportunity. Smith signed Rashard Lewis(notes) to one of the least cost-ef-ficient contracts in NBA history. Then, he traded what was an already histori-cally awful contract, for the only worse contract: Gilbert Arenas’.(notes) From bringing in Vince Carter(notes) to trading away Marcin Gortat(notes), Smith has made all the wrong moves. Like Dan Gilbert’s in Cleveland, his efforts have been as sincere as his ex-ecution is lacking and I’m willing to wager that he’s lost Dwight Howard’s confidence in the process.

2. Dealing with realityDwight Howard could leave the Or-

lando Magic two different ways. He can wit for free agency in 2012 and sign with whichever team he chooses or he could be traded this summer or some time before the trade deadline next year. Neither represents a par-ticularly favorable future for the Mag-ic, but if they trade him, even if it’s a downgrade, the team can at least ex-tract some value from his departure.

If they don’t trade him, the only thing they gain is cap space. With no Howard or new piece and a record of poor decision-making, what type of of-fer can they make a free agent?

An unattractive one.1. NBA ChampionshipsDwight Howard has made it no se-

cret that he wants to compete for a championship. Each passing year, he puts more pressure on the Magic’s management to make changes. He questions his coach’s attitude and teammates’ effort in seemingly every interview. His frustration oozes from every word and expression.

Now, imagine a Lakers team featur-ing Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol(notes) and an older Kobe Bryant(notes) that relies more and improves on his jump-shot. I can tell you the only people that would enjoy that thought are the Lak-er nation and David Stern.

As a Miami Heat fan and long time basketball observer, I can tell you it’s a nightmare that inches closer with every crushing playoff loss Howard endures.

Manny Pacquiao answers Floyd Mayweather, says fi ght on May 5 doesn’t make sense

ished before the end of May and staging the Pacquiao-Mayweather fi ght in a smaller venue is “foolish from an economic standpoint.”

Mayweather challenged and taunted Pac-quiao to a May 5 bout in a tweet on Tuesday.

“Manny Pacquiao I’m calling you out let’s fi ght May 5th and give the world what they want to see,” he tweeted.

Mayweather is available for a fi ght in May at the MGM Grand Garden after a judge agreed

last week to postpone his jail sentence for domestic violence until June. May-weather was sentenced to 87 days in jail, but likely will serve less time.

The MGM Grand seats about 17,000, which could fetch around $20 million in sales, but the larger arena could raise an additional $30 million, Koncz said.

“Why would I tell Manny to fi ght on the 5th and throw away a percentage of 30 million? That’s crazy,” he said.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has told the Philippines’ GMA television the only reason the fi ght won’t happen is if there is an “economic problem.”

He said the fi ght “could happen very, very easily” at the end of May – enough time to build the outdoor arena “the fi ght so badly needs.”

“I will also guarantee Manny’s purse,” he said. “In other words, Manny doesn’t want to go into the ring and just fi ght out a percentage.”

He said Mayweather is looking for “outside parties to guarantee his end of the purse.”

“So, until he fi nds the angel, there is no fi ght,” Arum said.In a separate interview with GMA, Pacquiao said that if Mayweather agrees

to a “50-50 sharing, there will be no problem.”“The purse is not the issue right now, the date is,” Koncz said. “But we don’t

have a problem splitting it 50-50.”

ACT OF VALORAct of Valor, a Bandito Brothers/

Relativity Media production, is scheduled for wide theatri-

cal release on over 3,000 screens na-tionwide on February 24, 2012. Just a quick look at the movie’s two-and-a-half minute trailer (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810125178/vid-eo/26907395) gives some indication of how successful this unique movie – the first one ever starring active duty U.S. Navy SEALs – will be. Relativity Media has partnered with best-selling author Tom Clancy on its heart-pound-ing Navy SEAL action-thriller Act of Valor and an accompanying novel-ization of the film’s screenplay. This marks Tom Clancy’s first time to pres-ent a novelization of a feature film not based on his own original work.

Bandito Brothers’ film Act of Val-or stars a group of active-duty Navy SEALs-not actors-along with Roselyn Sanchez, Alex Veadov, Jason Cottle and Nestor Serrano in a riveting story of contemporary global anti-terrorism. The film’s novelization, Tom Clancy Presents Act of Valor written by Dick Couch and George Galdorsi, based on the screenplay by Kurt Johnstad, was released in paperback by Clancy’s long-time publisher, Berkley Books on January 10, 2012.

Tom Clancy’s Foreword to Tom Clancy Presents Act of Valor, which also contains a link to the Navy Seal Foundation at: http://nswfoundation.org/ nicely sums up the spirit of both the movie and the novelization:

The events in this book and movie may not always be easy to read about or watch, but it is important for us to get a glimpse into the lives of these courageous Americans, and a deeper appreciation for sacrifices they make for us. We have an obligation to honor the SEALs and their families-not just in the event that we are fortunate enough to meet any of them one day, but by living our lives to the fullest, enjoying and preserving the liberties afforded to us because of their work.

Produced and directed by former Baja 1000 champion Mike “Mouse” McCoy and former stuntman Scott Waugh, Act of Valor goes deep into the secret world of U.S. Navy SEALs, today’s most elite and highly trained group of warriors. When the rescue of a kidnapped CIA operative leads to the discovery of a deadly terrorist plot against the United States, a team of SEALs is dispatched on a worldwide manhunt. As the men of Bandito Pla-toon race to stop a coordinated attack that could kill and maim thousands of American civilians, they must bal-ance their commitments to country, team, and their families back home.

The Movie and the Novelization

News

Inspired by true events, the film com-bines stunning combat sequences, up-to-the minute battlefield technology and heart-pumping emotion for the ultimate action adventure.

Filming took place in a variety of locations where SEAL and other spe-cial operations training is conducted; from Key West, Florida, to Fort Camp-bell, Kentucky, to Stennis, Mississip-pi, to El Centro, California, to San Cle-mente Island, and aboard U.S. Navy ships and submarines, including USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) and USS Florida (SSGN-728). And since every-one in uniform on screen is either a U.S. Navy SEAL or U.S. Navy Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen (SWCC), the true stars of this film effort were all active duty U.S. Navy

SEALs and SWCCs.In the summer of 2011, Dick Couch

and George Galdorisi embarked on a novelization of Act of Valor. Working with the Kurt Johnstad script and a pre-release DVD of the movie, they created a back-story of all the major characters; the Navy SEALs of the Bandito Platoon (the informal name of the SEALs who starred in the movie), SEAL family members, the villains the SEALs needed to defeat, as well as other characters – major and minor. While the movie implicitly addressed core values such as honor, courage, commitment, character, nobility, sac-rifice, family values and others, for the novelization, Couch and Galdorisi needed to walk the reader through these explicitly and show how the

success the U.S. Navy SEALs have enjoyed in missions throughout their 50-year history has been critically de-pendent on these core values.

The production of the manuscript for Tom Clancy Presents: Act of Val-or was on an accelerated timeline in order to get the book (a Penguin pre-mium paperback priced at $9.99) into production for the January 10, 2012 re-lease date. Couch and Galdorisi report that it was a fast paced several months to complete the book and shepherd it though time-critical rounds of editing, re-editing, and copy-editing, but the final result is a book and story with the granularity to enable the reader to internalize what he or she might have missed in an action-packed, 100-min-ute movie.

Since San Diego is home to the U.S. Navy Special Warfare Command, this is as much as “San Diego” movie and book as any that have ever been done before. As Tom Clancy says in the book’s Foreword: “Read the book. See the movie. If you are inspired by what you read and see, please consider joining me in making a donation to the Navy Seal Foundation at: http://nsw-foundation.org/.” And 2012, the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Navy SEALs, is the perfect time to do just that.

New year, new cool cars in Jay Leno’s garage. The very impres-sive Hennessey Venom GT has al-ready stopped by the garage once in concept form, but now the Hennessey tuned Lotus Elise — as well as its creator, John Hen-nessey — is back in production form to wow the late night talk show host.

The Hennessey Venom GT was limited to only 10 units, each priced at a whop-ping $950,000. The Venom GT is powered by a supercharged 6.2 liter LS9 V8 engine, same used in the Corvette ZR1, that delivers a total of 725 bhp. And if this is not enough, the tuner will also be offering 1000 bhp and 1200 bhp twin turbo V8 engine variants. With a curb weight of 2,685 lbs, the 1200 HP Venom GT will hit a top speed of 275 mph. The latter, speedier version is the one Leno had the chance to test, of course.

“Nothing’s diffi cult. Everything’s a challenge. Through adversity to the stars. From the last plane to the last bullet to the last minute to the last man – we fi ght. WE fi ght! We FIGHT!”

“Red Tails” is an exciting and emo-tional action-packed fi lm that tells the story of everyday heroes rising above extraordinary challenges. Inspired by the heroics and valor of the fi rst all-African American aerial combat unit, the fi lm follows the Tuskegee Airmen

as they shatter all doubts and preju-dices with excellence in the air and on the ground.

Executive Producer George Lu-cas dedicated over 23 years to “Red Tails,” patiently developing the script and seeking out a director who could bring his vision to life and deliver an adventure fi lm of stirring heroics that have come to defi ne the Lucasfi lm moniker.

Twentieth Century Fox will distrib-ute the fi lm, due in theaters Jan. 20,

2012.Under the direction of Anthony

Hemingway (Treme, The Wire, Bat-tlestar Galactica, True Blood), “Red Tails” uses the historic backdrop of World War II to tell the story of a cast of men, drawn from many walks of life, who were united in their desire to fi ght for their country against a daunt-ing enemy.

perils facing the Allied forces in the European theater. Meanwhile, in the halls of the Pentagon, one man fi ghts so that the men under his charge are afforded the opportunity to prove their mettle in war.

“Red Tails” is a multi-layered fi lm, taking viewers inside the cockpit dur-ing spectacular gut-wrenching aerial dogfi ghts, as well as into the hearts and minds of the pilots, crewmen and leaders during World War II.

The fi lm’s ensemble cast includes Oscar® winner Cuba Gooding Jr., Oscar nominee Terrence Howard, Bryan Cranston, Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Tristan Wilds, Cliff Smith AKA Method Man, Kevin Phillips, Lee Tergesen, Andre Royo, Ne-Yo, Elijah Kelley, Marcus T. Paulk, Leslie Odom Jr., Michael B. Jordan and Daniela Ruah.

The fi lm is being produced by Rick McCallum and Charles Floyd Johnson.

At its heart, “Red Tails” aspires to honor the bravery, excellence and her-oism of the men that served as Tuske-gee Airmen by introducing their story to all generations through a thrilling action adventure story. In this way, the fi lm looks to educate and entertain a generation about these true American heroes who forever put to rest the mis-placed belief that African Americans lacked the courage, discipline and in-telligence to be fi ghter pilots. Against all odds, these men fought to the last plane, to the last bullet, to the last minute, to the last man and won the admiration of the world.

War Horse – The making of the motion pictureA wonderful pictorial moviebook

Brimming with more than 140 dra-matic images, this

is the stunning, visual companion to Steven Spielberg’s epic adven-ture, set in rural Eng-land and Europe, about a young man and his horse and their separate jour-neys through the battle-fi elds of the First World War. One of the great stories of friendship and war, the successful novel War Horse not only inspired the award-winning stage play, but also in-spired one of the great directors in fi lm history to commit his talent, vi-sion, and resources to make this extraordinary movie, which was shot in the countryside of England.

“I fi rst fell in love with the story of War Horse because I was moved by the relationship between a boy and an animal in Michael Morpurgo’s novel and the screenplay by Richard Curtis and Lee Hall,” writes Steven Spielberg in his foreword. “But, ultimately, I made it because of what the book and the screenplay say about courage. militarypress.com : news, special offers & morethis film, it was my hope to issue a call for courage in our daily lives. A call to ‘be brave.’”

Additional forewords by producer Kathleen Kennedy, novelist Michael Mor-purgo, and co-screenwriter Richard Curtis reveal their feelings about the story and the process of moving it from page to screen. The main body of the book is divided into three sections:

Part 1: Joey’s Journey—A visual retelling, along with script excerpts and filmmakers’ comments, of the journey taken by Joey, the horse trained by his beloved Albert, from the striking verdant countryside of Dartmoor, Devon, to training in the British cavalry, to trench warfare in France.

Part 2: The Making of War Horse—An insider’s glimpse of the movie-making process highlighted with fascinating insights from the international cast and the crew about the casting, locations, costumes, horse training, and much more.

Part 3: The History of War Horses—An illuminating section on the role of horses in battle, illustrated with iconic images from history, vivid drawings, paintings and photographs.

This beautiful book is a testament to what can be done when people become impassioned about a goal. As producer Kathleen Kennedy expresses in her fore-word: “War Horse was one of those unusual productions that comes together in an incredibly short time, and for all the right reasons. Everyone involved under-stood the film’s potential, the richness of the characters, the depth of emotion, and the strength of the story’s message.”

24January 15, 2012THE MILITARY PRESS

By Steven Spielberg, “War Horse” Director

When the Great War started, it was ironically called “the war to end all wars.” Horses were once considered an essential offensive component of a military force, and a cavalry charge

was perhaps the most superior shock tactic prior to World War I. Caught in the transition from manual to mechanized warfare, horses that had once been the mainstay in battles were now part of the shock-ing toll that contemporary combat was taking on its participants — both human and animal.

It was against this harsh reality that Michael Morpurgo found a beautiful story for his “War Horse.” I was immediately drawn to both the historical backdrop and the emotional depth of this story. The story of Joey encompassed his days on an English farm in the care of a young boy, Albert, to the grim canvas of wartime Europe where he, among soldiers of many nations, became a hero in his own right.

Through the eyes of Joey and Albert, I embraced the opportunity to explore the vast scope of World War I. Despite the exposition to the horrors of war and the shattering of their innocence our heroes encounter on their journey to be reunited, this fi lm is not about who is right in war. It is about the remarkable humanity that an animal is able to bring to these characters — be they English, German or French.

Beyond the backdrop of the war, there were two distinct stars in the fi lm. The fi rst was the Dartmoor region of England. I have never before been gifted with such an abundance of natural beauty. Despite my extensive coverage of landscapes and skies, I hardly scratched the surface of the visual opportunities that were offered to me. It was a breathtaking place and a particularly rewarding experience to be there on location.

The other stars of “War Horse” were our extraordinary horses. On screen, the fi lm illustrates the many contributions and sacrifi ces hors-es made to and for the war. Behind the camera, we witnessed fi rsthand their amazing contributions to our fi lm. Having lived with horses for so many years, I knew they were intuitive and that they would capture the emotion we ourselves were feeling while fi lming this beautiful story in such an exceptionally beautifully countryside.

War is a heartbreaking part of life, and unfortunately World War I was not the “war to end all wars,” as they forecasted once upon a day. When I thought about that prediction and the confl icts that have transpired since then, I found myself looking for the distinguishing characteristic of this past century of warfare. I believe it is courage.

I fi rst fell in love with the story of “War Horse” because I was moved by the relationship between a boy and an animal in Michael Morpur-go’s novel and the screenplay by Richard Curtis and Lee Hall. But, ultimately, I made it because of what both the book and the screenplay say about courage. It is about the courage of Joey and what he endures to survive and the courage of Albert in his attempt to fi nd his best friend in a time of war.

With every frame of this fi lm, it was my hope to issue a call for cour-age in our daily lives, a call to “be brave.”

what could be braver than that?
