Friends,

2013 was a year of tragedy and loss for everyone who knew and loved Jamie, but we know that Jamie’s spirit, her love for the world and for her family, and her commitment to making the world a better place is living on.

the community that rallied to launch the Jamie Kirk Hahn Foundation has shown us the wisdom once pointed out by Fred rogers, who reminded us to “look for the helpers” in frightening, trying times. In these past months, we have been touched by the warmth and generosity of so many helpers.

We have dedicated ourselves to acting on Jamie’s vision for the world by helping the helpers, who are already seeking to improve and shape our world. thanks to the incredible support of so many during our early stages, we are well on our way.

In 2014, we will work alongside our community to improve our world through service. Jamie dedicated her life to helping individuals and organizations build their capacity in order to build a healthier, equitable, and more vibrant community and region. We look forward to developing emerging leaders and building an army of Jamies through service projects, training programs, and a series of convenings around critical issues facing north Carolina.

and to our early supporters, we could never thank you enough for your support of the Foundation, your love for our Jamie, and your resolve to serve our community. We know that Jamie would be humbled by your support and love.

Jamie was a person of action and we believe that 2014 is our time to act.

Yours in service,

The Boards of Directors & Advisors of the Jamie Kirk Hahn Foundation

jaMie

jaMie KirK HaHn was an optimist and an idealist as she made her way through the cynical business of politics. the political process can be difficult to navigate with grace and poise, but Jamie always did.

She was a great wife and family member, a supportive and loving friend, and a leader without a title. She taught everyone who knew her that it was possible to shape community, impact lives, and leave behind a legacy of service and love without being elected to office or serving as Chair of the Board.

Jamie brought people together to make a difference, and she was a tremendous fundraiser. She convened people, led to action, and gave of her time and talents. and she always served with love.

Jamie Kirk Hahn will always be the north Star of our Foundation. our work will be driven forward by her values, her wish to hear a diverse group of voices at the table, and her passionate belief in alleviating poverty, increasing opportunity, and investing in education.

Defining tHe jaMie KirK HaHn founDation

thanks to the many people who have helped grow the Foundation the Jamie Kirk Hahn Foundation is known for our commitment to serve and our ability to convene.

the Days of Service and Jamie’s life story have combined to shape the Foundation as a vehicle for public service. We are exchanging ideas and working creatively to make service a part of life for more members of our community, because civic engagement is a key factor for social mobility.

More than 100 people played critical roles in run up to the launch weekend, ranging from college students to leaders who have spent more than forty years in public life. We intend to carry that forward into a formula for our success.

Jamie was an incredibly vivacious, engaging person. In keeping with her spirit, the Foundation has become known as a lively, enjoyable way to build community and shape our world.

We believe that thinking about service and civic engagement as components of a rewarding lifestyle will bring helpers to improve our community, state, and region in even greater numbers.

the Foundation is now known for our ability to convene, bringing emerging leaders together across the community and connecting those who want to grow with mentors.

our service

Jamie would have wanted us to not just talk about the good that we can do, but to act. With that in mind, we resolved to make a difference through service immediately.

We partnered with IFFS for a second Day of Service in December, where we packed and delivered groceries to over 40 families in low wealth communities to honor Jamie’s commitment to giving back during the holidays.

training

on november 23rd, a portion of the incredible team that helped build the Foundation partnered with north Carolina Central Masters of public administration students to produce a free workshop on launching a nonprofit and telling the story of the Jamie Kirk Hahn Foundation.

those who attended the workshop learned key skills necessary for creating and maintaining a successful nonprofit organization. the workshop dove into topics such as fundraising, communications and management techniques.

2014—a year of action

Ideas + action + Creativity = JamieWe have held a number of facilitations and dialogues around the Foundation and our future. We have worked in collaboration with many individuals who have helped shape the Foundation to develop a formula for our work.

Its three components are: ideas, action, and creativity.

We believe that dialogue about critical issues, defined as a true give and take, is an important ingredient for shaping our future. Critical conversations that feature a range of ages, experiences, backgrounds, and opinions are held too rarely. We believe that the Jamie Kirk Hahn Foundation will start many of these conversations in 2014 and beyond.

We will use our dialog to create action. We will partner with organizations that do meaningful work in our region, continuing to bring passionate people together to act on the issues. We intend to build additional partnerships with individuals and organizations to address issues facing our state in 2014.

We also intend to train individuals to make a difference beyond Days of Service and dialogue. In 2014, we will hold additional workshops and trainings around the skills necessary for successful service. those skills

Moving forward, we will spark conversation around issues that must be part of the civic dialogue in north Carolina — food insecurity, child poverty, lack of social mobility, growing inequality, homelessness, the future of public education, the growth of our state and region, and more.

could include the ability to tell a story, how to start a dialogue, design research and design thinking, or how to fundraise. We believe that bringing people together to learn from one another is an important part of shaping our world.

Creativity is the last part of our formula. When people come together to discuss the issues and develop skills, new ideas and creativity form within their network. We believe that those creative collisions will become a catalyst for action and building an army of Jamies committed to reshaping our community, standing up for the voiceless, and advocating for change.

In the meantime, here are three ways you can help today:1. sign uP to volunteer and encourage your friends to do the same.
