Group of Mennonite workers taking a much deserved break by the creek. The flagstone steps down to the water wereinstalled by them.

MDS volunteers are close to having the Loupee house ready for volunteerhousing and have been steadily making progress on dry walling, paintingand replacing floors. The shower trailer was successfully moved from theschool down to the property with the assistance of trailer genius and MDSvolunteer, Roger Claassen.

Mostly due to harvesting and seasonal work, over the next few weeks therewill be a lull in MDS volunteers in Jamestown. This will last about two weeksand then will pick up again in September. At this point, we hope to bebuilding at least two homes while continuing repairs on a few others.

As always, if you have repair needs due to the flood, please contact Nina.

Flatirons Habitat for HumanityFlatirons will be the financial agent for the CDBG-DR (CommunityDevelopment Block Grant) funding from the state for rebuilds. The rebuildsin town will be a combination of those who will be using CDBG-DR fundingwith volunteers from MDS and some homes will be self funded withvolunteer help from MDS. We hope to break ground on the first home inSeptember.

    School Is Back In Session!!!

Hello from the ColoradoSpirit Canyons Team!

It has been a pleasure getting toknow many of you. We feel veryprivileged to hear your stories

and talk to you about yourrecovery. As we have movedthrough the summer, the rains

have increased, and so too haveour anxiety levels. From our

experience listening to survivorsof the flood, the increased rains

commonly create troublingmemories and flashbacks of last

year's flood, feelings ofbeing overwhelmed, a strong

need to avoid places associatedwith water or flooding, and-most

commonly-just plain worry oranxiety. If you are experiencing

anything like this, it can behelpful to try to reduce stress in

other areas of your life. This

can be as simple as eatinghealthy meals, getting enough

sleep, taking time tobreathe, spending time with the

people you care about, andremembering to do

something fun. Doing thesesimple things can give us a

sense of mastery in the smallthings, and we enter a state thatis better equipped to handle the

anxiety of increasing rainand rising rivers. If you would

like to talk to us aboutdeveloping strategies for

dealing with stress and anxiety,we will continue to be inJamestown Town Hall

every Saturday from 11:00 AMto 3:00 PM.

The traditional "Back to School Arch" kicks off the school year for the JES kids and parents.

It's been a long wait, but Jamestown Elementary students are finally back intheir own school building. After the 2013 flood, the doors to the schoolbuilding were closed, due both to a lack of access and running water.Students were divided into two groups. If they were displaced due to theflood, they either met in south Boulder at Community Montessori or wereforced to relocate to other schools. If they remained in or above Jamestown, they met at Glacier View Ranch near the Peak-to-Peak Highway.

During the summer, the school building was used to house teams ofMennonite Disaster Services volunteers. And who could forget theenormous shower trailer that was brought in for the volunteers that took upthe entire playground?

All of that is behind them now as the doors to the school have officially

reopened. This year, the school welcomes new 3rd - 5th grade teacher fromthe Bar K, Patrick Griffin. Gay Paxton returns as the K - 2nd grade teacherand Beth Brotherton returns as the Principal's Assistant (and so muchmore!). Scott Boesel - "Mr. B." - is the Principal.

As would be expected after such a disruptive year, the school's numbersare low, with 15 kids attending this year. As all who have come in contactwith the school know, it's a special place with a whole lot of love and anemphasis on discovery and education. As always, local homeschoolers areinvited to send their kids to the school on a part-time basis.

Welcome back, Jamestown Elementary. It's good to hear the school bellringing and the voices of children on the playground once again.
