Benjamin Northey

Benjamin Northey is Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Associate Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Northey appears regularly as guest conductor with all major Australian symphony orchestras, Opera Australia (Turandot, L’elisir d’amore, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, Carmen), New Zealand Opera (Sweeney Todd) and State Opera South Australia (La sonnambula, Les contes d’Hoffmann). His international appearances include concerts with London Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg.

An Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, his awards include the 2010 Melbourne Prize Outstanding Musician’s Award and multiple awards for his numerous recordings with ABC Classics.

James Morrison

James Morrison’s career thus far has been diverse and perhaps not typical of most jazz musicians. He recorded Jazz Meets the Symphony with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Lalo Schifrin and performed concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in addition to Royal Command Performances on two occasions for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. James has also been invited to perform specially for US Presidents Bush, Clinton and Obama.

James has appeared at the Hollywood Bowl and guested with many great artists as diverse as jazz superstars Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones and rock legends INXS. In 2000, James composed and performed the fanfare for the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in Sydney.

HAYDN’S CREATION

Launch yourself into the story of creation as the MSO performs Haydn’s life-affirming masterpiece The Creation.

A giant of classical music and a bucket list item for anyone with an interest in the genre, the MSO’s performance of The Creation is a true highlight of the season. What’s more, MSO Chief Conductor, Sir Andrew Davis, will lead the Orchestra as well as internationally-renowned soloists and the 120-person MSO Chorus in the MSO’s spiritual home, Hamer Hall.

MOZART FESTIVAL

14–23 JulyArts Centre Melbourne, Hamer Hall

Dive into Mozart’s life and musical legacy over the course of this festival.

Journey through his early years when MSO Plays Eine kleine Nachtmusik (14 July), the turbulent middle stages of the composer’s life at MSO Plays Mozart 40 (15 July) and his final works – including the famously unfinished Requiem – during Mozart’s Requiem (21 July).

To conclude the festival, the MSO will perform the Academy Award®-winning film Amadeus Live in Concert (22–23 July).
