History• James Madison University (JMU) came into being as the State Normal

and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg on Tuesday evening, March 10, 1908 at 10:15 p.m.

• The first day of classes was September 30, 1909, with total enrollment for the first year of 209. The first graduating class in June, 1911 numbered twenty. The school became fully coeducational in 1966

in 1908 as a school to train public school teachers, this institution has had five names: – State Normal and Industrial School for Women

(1908) – State Normal School for Women (1914) – State Teachers College (1924) – Madison College (1938) – James Madison University (1977)
