James Hetfield was born on August 3, 1963, in Downey, California.

James father - Virgil (a truck driver who later left the family) and mother - Cynthia (opera singer) strict and devout Christians. James brother, Jacob John Hetfield, is currently presiding as the local church pastor of Jonesford, California.

Cynthia has died of a cancer, but has refused treatment because of the belief. Parts of the songs "Leper Messiah" and "The God That Failed" from the albums Master of Puppets, are about his mother and her faith during cancer.

Death Cynthia and the big religiousness of parents have strongly affected songs James - the songs "Mama Said", "Dyers Eve" and "The God That Failed," are about Hetfield's parents, and "Until It Sleeps" is about cancer.

Hetfield was nine years when it has started to take piano lessons, then he has decided to play drums of the brother. As a result, in 14 years, it has begun learns to play a guitar.

James speaks that in the childhood music Aerosmith has made on it the greatest impact, and they became the reason of that that he has decided to play a guitar. Other bands such as Motörhead, Black Sabbath, Diamond Head, Iron Maiden, Queen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, AC/DC, Blue Öyster Cult, Led Zeppelin and Thin Lizzy also had a major influence on his musical tastes.

Hetfield formed his first band, Obsession, when he was in his early teens.

Hetfield's next band, Phantom Lord, was born with Tanner on guitar, Mulligan on drums, and Hetfield singing and playing guitar. The group went through a few bass players until graduation, when Hetfield moved back to Downey.

In the subsequent, through the announcement in the newspaper, The Recycler, James has got acquainted with Lars Ulrich, and two of them have created Metallica in 1981

In the early days of the band, Metallica experimented with a few different vocal/guitar configurations. The finalized line-up of the band became Hetfield (rhythm guitar and vocals), Lars Ulrich (drums), Dave Mustaine (lead guitar), and Ron McGovney (bass). Eventually, Hetfield and Ulrich ejected Mustaine due to his alcoholic tendencies, and recruited lead guitarist Kirk Hammett from the band Exodus the same day. Mustaine has generated the thrash metal band Megadeth.

Metallica has written down and has let out albums:1983 - Kill them all; 1984 - Ride The Lightning; 1986 - Master Of Puppets;1988 - And Justice For All; 1991 - Metallica (Black Album); 1996 – Load;1997 – Reload; 1998 - Garage Inc; 1999 - S&M; 2003 - St. Anger;2008 - Death Magnetic.

On April 4, 2009, James along with remaining Metallica members Lars, Kirk, Robert, and Jason were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Hetfield was ranked 24th in the Hit Parader's Top Metal Vocalist of All Time.

When he is not writing, singing or playing, Hetfield enjoys a variety of outdoor activities including hunting, skateboarding, snowboarding, water and jet-skiing; sketching, working in his garage customizing cars and motorcycles, and watching his favorite football team the Oakland Raiders.

It also collects old guitars and likes to go by old cars.

Hetfield has several tattoos. He has also tattooed an 'M' on his right hand which stands for Metallica and 'F' on his left hand which stands for his wife Francesca.

Hetfield says he is often happiest spending time with his wife Francesca and their three children: Cali (13 June 1998), Castor (18 May 2000), and Marcella (17 January 2002). Hetfield married his wife Francesca Tomasi on August 17, 1997. The Hetfield family currently resides in Marin County, CA.
