In a career spanning five decades, pianist Monty Alexander has built a rep-utation exploring and bridging the worlds of American jazz, popular song, and the music of his native Jamaica, finding in each a sincere spirit ofmusical expression. In the process, he has performed and recorded withartists from every corner of the entertainment world: Frank Sinatra, TonyBennett, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin,Bill Cosby among others.

Born June 6, 1944 and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, Monty was educatedat Jamaica College. He took his first piano lessons at age six, although he

is largely self-taught. As a teenager, he witnessed concerts by Louis Armstrong and Nat “King”Cole at Kingston’s Carib Theater. These artists had a profound effect on Alexander’s aspirations. He formed Monty and the Cyclones in the late 1950s and also recorded on sessions with theSkatalites.

Monty and his family came to the United States in 1961. While playing in Las Vegas with ArtMooney’s orchestra, he caught the eye of New York City club owner Jilly Rizzo and his friend,Frank Sinatra. Rizzo hired the young pianist to work in his club, Jilly’s, where he accompaniedSinatra and others. There he met Modern Jazz Quartet vibraphonist Milt Jackson, who hired himand eventually introduced him to former Charlie Parker collaborator and legendary bassist RayBrown. Alexander recorded and performed with the two jazz giants on many occasions. Jazz’sgreatest luminaries welcomed Alexander to their “musical fraternity” in the mid-1960s. Amongthese earliest enthusiasts for his playing were Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Miles Davis.

To date Monty has recorded over 70 albums as a leader. One of his signature products is ConcreteJungle, a set of twelve compositions penned by Bob Marley and reinterpreted via Alexander's jazzpiano-oriented arrangements. .

In 2008, with the invitation of Wynton Marsalis, Monty conceived and directed the acclaimed pro-gram Lords of the West Indies at Jazz at Lincoln Center, broadcast nationally on BETJ. Also in 2008American icon, Tony Bennett invited Monty to record as the featured pianist on his Christmasalbum, A Swinging Christmas, with the Count Basie Orchestra. His .Harlem-Kingston-Express:Live was hailed by the recording industry and received a Grammy nomination in 2012.

Monty has gained numerous awards including Commander of the Order of Distinction for outstanding services to Jamaica as a worldwide music ambassador.

In Hal Leonard’s 2005 book The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time, Alexander was listed among the top five Jazz pianists of all time.

Born on the 14th January1952, Kingsley Michael‘Ibo’ Cooper has beenliving an extraordinarylife full of astonishingachievements, helping todefine a musical genreand inspiring everyonefortunate enough toknow him.

Ibo completed the rigor-ous Royal Academy of Music theoretical examination atage fifteen and the practical examination at seventeenwhile at Jamaica College. At JC Ibo served as the collegeorganist and choir leader from second form through sixthform. During a summer stint at the Government’s ScienceLab, Cooper was oftentimes caught using the test tubes asmusical instruments. His proclivity for musical innovationand growth led him to found or co-found three separatebands in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Of the threeensembles - the Rhythms, Inner Circle and Third World –the latter two are counted by many as among the mostinfluential and beloved reggae acts of all time.

After cutting his musical teeth as a founding member ofthe Rhythms, Cooper then went on to co-found InnerCircle with brothers Ian and Roger Lewis and were laterjoined by Stephen ‘Cat’ Coore and Willie Stewart. Cat andIbo formed Third World after leaving Inner Circle.According to Ibo, Third World followed Bob Marley’spath in taking reggae all over the world and became aninstitution in their own right.

Third World, during ‘Ibo’ Cooper’s tenure as keyboardplayer and songwriter, produced a vast discography ofdynamic and sophisticated reggae albums and singles, which pushed the envelope of the genre by adding a funkelement and using a synthesizers among other innova-tions. The group’s seminal album ’96⁰ in the Shade’ andthe eponymous single (‘1865’) received critical acclaimacross the world, their following album ‘Journey to Addis’featuring ‘Now That We Found Love’ was a huge com-mercial success and their whole catalog had a profound

effect on reggae and the music industry as a whole.

The influence of Third World helped to make reggae moreaccessible to wider audiences, pushed the boundaries ofthe genre itself and led to the fusion of reggae and a vari-ety of other genres. The band worked with legends such asBob Marley and Stevie Wonder and also received 10 reg-gae Grammy nominations. Perhaps most notable amongall of their awards is the United Nations Medal of Peace, for their contributions to African causes.

After leaving Third World in 1997, Ibo’s passion for musicremained as he left the world stage to take to the mostimportant arena of all; the classroom. The boy who grewup in a family of teachers is now a senior lecturer at theEdna Manley College of the Visual and Performing ArtsSchool of Music. Ibo has dedicated the most recent phaseof his extraordinary life to passing his great musical giftonto the next generation and doing all he can to inspireyoungsters toward the kind of success he has enjoyed.

In 2000, Ibo Cooper worked as Research Fellow in theReggae Studies Unit at the University of West Indies. Inthe ensuing decade he has also served as chairman of themusic sub-committee of the Entertainment AdvisoryCommittee, Entertainment Advisory Boards and is thecurrent chairman of the Jamaica Reggae IndustryAssociation (JaRIA). From humble roots to putting thebranches on reggae roots, it is fair to say that Cooper con-tinues to do everything he can to cement his legacy as notonly a true musician’s musician and reggae innovator butalso a national treasure with a big heart and an invaluablementor to music’s next generation.

Ibo is an inspiration to millions and none more so than tohis loving family. He and wife Joy are proud parents toArianne, Arif and Akiri. Arianne is an Attorney-at-Lawand Arif and Akiri continue the Cooper family love affairwith music. Arif is a lead DJ on Fame FM and a notedmusic producer for world-renowned acts such as SeanPaul and Beenie Man; Akiri recently completed hisBachelors Degree in Music at the Edna Manley College ofthe Visual and Performing Arts.
