PURIYING SELF - CHANGING SOCIETY

Wealth has a very direct impact on the

attitude and approach to one's life.

Human history is filled with examples

wherein money has led mankind to act in

a manner that does not behove its dignity.

Money lending and interest based

economic system has made man selfish

and material oriented. The greed for

money has lead to unlimited exploitation

and oppression leading to economic

slavery, disparity, hunger and wars. Huge

populations and continents have been

exploited and ruled to starvation. Nearly

80% and more resources of the world are

in the grip of the select elites. Wealth has

begun to stagnate and injustices and

inequality is breeding all around us.

This human weakness for accumulating

wealth has been addressed from day one

by the bounteous wisdom of Allah(SWT)

through His Messengers (PBUH). Zakat or

the Islamic Social Welfare System is an

institution that has been the focal point

stressed by al l Prophets(PBUT) of

Allah(SWT) for the reformation of human

society. It is one of the most important

pillar of Islam and mandatory upon

muslims who are Sahib-e-nisab as

ordained by Allah in his Holy Qur’an so

that his wealth may be purified and Allah

secures & increases it for him.

A Muslim is Sahib-e-Nisab if he possess

wealth equivalent to 87.48 grams of gold

or 612.36 grams of silver (whichever is less

as per current market rate) on which a

year has passed. The wealth may be gold,

silver, cash in hand, cash at bank, bonds,

funds, shares, investments, stock of goods

etc. single or in combination of each

other. Sahib-e-Nisab should pay annually

only 2.5% of his total wealth. This is the

minimum, more you pay the greater the

reward that Allah shall bestow upon you.

The money that we pay as Zakat is not

something which Allah needs or receives.

He is above any want and desire. He, in His

benign Mercy, promises us manifold

rewards if we help our brethren. But there

is one basic condition for being thus

rewarded: when we pay in the name of

Allah, we shall neither expect nor demand

any worldly gains from the beneficiaries

nor to be called as philanthropists. Zakat’s

fundamental importance lies in the fact

that it fosters in us the quality of sacrifice

and rids us of selfishness. Islam accepts

within its fold only those who are ready to

give away in the way of Allah some of our

hard-earned wealth willingly and without

any temporal or personal gain.

A study of the 8 heads stipulated by the

Qur'an for the distribution of the Zakat

does indicate that if implemented

accordingly it will solve all the economic

and social problems faced by mankind

today. With reference to Surah Al-Taubah

(9:60): “The Alms are meant only for the

Poor and the Needy and those who are in

charge thereof, those whose hearts are to

be reconciled, and to free those in

bondage, and to help those burdened

with debt, and for expenditure in the Way

of Allah and for the wayfarer...”. Since the

concept of Zakat and its institutional

i m p o r t a n c e i s u n c l e a r a n d h a s

diminished among the Muslims over the

past many centuries, Jamaat-e-islami

Hind has been constantly striving to

inculcate the broad concept and

understanding of Zakat as was prevalent

in the times of the Prophet Muhammad

(PBUH) and the early Caliphs (RA).

J a m a a t - e - I s l a m i H i n d G o a h a s

endeavoured to create Bait-ul-Maal

(central treasury) to ensure proper

distribution of the Zakat fund as per

mentioned in the Qur’anic Ayat above.

A religious and reformist movement,

Jamaat-e-islami Hind (JIH) has been

striving to introduce an understanding of

the Islamic system of life. It presents

Islamic teachings and invites fellow

citizens to understand the fundamental

concepts of Islam such as the unity and

oneness of God, Prophethood and its

need and the importance of belief in the

life after death. Amongst the Muslims it

works for their educational and economic

upliftment. It educates them to recognize

their responsibility of understanding,

practising and preaching Islam. At the

social level, it is constantly making efforts

to provide justice and ensures security of

each individual's fundamental rights.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind began its journey

in Goa in the mid 70's. Today, more than

b e i n g a c o n v e n t i o n a l r e l i g i o u s

organization, it has been growing as a

socio-religious organization working for

the spiritual as well as social well being for

the people of Goa. Since its formal

inception it has been addressing the

socio-cultural and civilizational issues of

the Goan society. The movement has

been passionate and active in diverse

fields of religious and sociological

services.

Board of Innovative Education (BIE)

established by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Goa for

last few years has been working in diverse

Salihat is an institution established in

the year 2002 for young girls who

have dropped out of the regular

schooling system.

Students here are taught home

science, computers, Qur'an tajweed

as a part of 1 & 3 years Diploma in

Pre-marital counselling sessions are

also held regularly. A bus is dedicated

for ease of transport and 8 faculty

T h e H o u s e o f W i s d o m i s a

publishing house run by Jamaat-

e-Islami Hind Goa in Miramar,

Panjim and at Masjid -e- Abrar,

Margao. Drawing inspiration from

the historic “Bait-ul-Hikmah” of

the renowned Cordoba. The

House of Wisdom in Goa is the

only resource centre for the best

books on lessons and teachings

o f I s l a m , h i s t o r y , c u l t u r e ,

civilization, scientific etc. Many

translations of the Holy Qur’an

and narratives & biographies of

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) are

made available here.

Apart from books, the House of

Wisdom also sells audio-visual

and cultural gift items. It has

played a pivotal role in educating

both Muslims and people of other

fa i th about I s lam and has

addressed many misconceptions

about Islam. It supplies Islamic

literature to all the major Libraries

in Goa and participates in all

major book exhibitions across

Goa.

Literature plays a vital role in

presenting thoughts and transforming

opinion of a society. In order to reach

out to the Konkani speaking Goan

population, KSP established in the year

1995 published few basic books about

Islam and its Prophets (PBUT) in

Konkani.

The Qur'an Translation Project in

Konkani has translated “Amma Para”

into Konkani. The literature prepared

by KSP has been exhibited and

presented at many Konkani Seminars

and book exhibitions. The first ever

comprehensive book on the History

and Heritage of Muslims in Goa was

published and released by KSP.

Under KSP is the Islamic Centre Goa,

the first Islamic Centre that regularly

holds seminars and discussions on

Islam. The Islamic Centre hosts the

multi-lingual Islamic library and an

Independent seminar hall for ladies

too. The Centre acts as a platform for

hosting various social welfare and

educational programs for the society.

During pandemic KSP started Live

Jumma Khutba to keep the muslims

intact with the its spirit.

ASSOCIATION FOR PROTECTION OF CIVIL RIGHTS GOA CHAPTER ( registered under society act)

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind formed APCR in 2006. A non-

governmental & not for profit civil rights' group

comprises of advocates, social activists and para-

legal social workers dedicated to defend the rights of

the under privileged sections of the society.

APCR has been committed to the protection of

society from violation of human rights, Illegal

detentions, custodial deaths, fake encounters, false

cases on the behest of political exigencies,

unprovoked firing on demonstrators, criminal

negligence of officials and public servants at the

time of natural and man-made calamities and

consumer frauds by local manufacturers and

service providers and Multinational Companies.

APCR Goa has organised, participated and

represented itself in various symposiums and

seminars across Goa on Legal, Human and Civil

Rights programmes organized by different NGO’s.

APCR Goa has good cordial relations with other Civil

Rights Groups such as Goa RTI Forum, CSJP, NCHRO,

ARZ, CWC,GBA, Destero Eve Mahila Mandel, Legal Cell,

Trade Union, Sahas, Video volunteers, SC/ST union,

Ambedkarits, positive people, Coonj etc.

“Aashiyana - Shelter Home” is an

initiative by Madhur Sandesh Centre a

registered t rust establ ished by

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Goa. Being first

of its kind in India, it provides shelter to

safeguard faith of innocent Muslim

children living in slum and streets due

to poverty and no guardians.

This institute thus offers, an opportunity

to Muslim children from economically

weaker section of the society to gain

their education without compromising

on their true identity.

Here, children are educated about our heritage and identity in an optimistic way,

thus enabling them to contribute for society and nation at large.
