Farid Hamidi, the Attorney Gen- eral of Afghanistan, on Tuesday directed attorney general offices across the country to bring an end to the practice of arbitrary deten- tions. He said prosecutors should respect the status, dignity and freedom of citizens and avoid arbitrary deten- tions. “A few hours of detention could spoil the status and dignity of a person and a family, therefore I rec- ommend that prosecutors should be professional in their work and avoid arbitrary and unnecessary detentions,” said Hamidi. He also pledged to appoint wom- an attorneys in 31 provinces in the near future. Women attorneys meanwhile said their role is crucial in efforts to re- duce violence in the country. “A woman can’t tell a man about her problems, but she can share it with women, therefore we need to increase the presence of women in the legal and judicial institutions,” said one female prosecutor, Basmi- na. “The role of female prosecutors across the country, particularly in insecure areas, is crucial. Female prosecutors will play an important role in curbing violence against women,” said Leena, a prosecutor. “Within one month, female pros- ecutors should start working in 31 provinces and serve the women,” added Hamidi. Organised by the Indonesian government, the meeting of ulema is aimed to find a solution to the decades-long conflict in Afghanistan, according to the Jakarta Globe. Kalla, who attended the Kabul Peace Process last week, was quoted as saying: “We hope the confer- ence will result in a mutual agreement, or fatwa, to bring peace to Afghanistan.” Accompanied by Foreign Minister RetnoMarsu- di, the VP met members of the Indonesian Ulema Council (to discuss preparations for the event, slat- ed for March 15-19.
