Jai Jinendra and Pranam!
On behalf of Board of Trustees (BOT) and Executive Committee (EC) of Jain Society of Greater Detroit (JSGD), we wish all members colorful Spring and beautiful summer. During these days, weather is nice, the sun is shining, mornings are so tranquil, colors are brighter, and nature just beckons us to come enjoy it--visit to our beautiful Temple, early morning runs, bike rides through the neighborhood, reading on the grass, evening hikes, picnic lunches...We are half way through the year and several events have taken place.
Kaalchkara - Journey of Ragas was held on May 10th. Many thanks to Bharti Shah for leading the event. JSGD has been hosting this Jiv Daya fundraiser to benefit local organizations. Geetha Raghu and her group gave a wonderful performance which was attended by over 200 enthusiastic music lovers who generously donated over $10,000 towards Jiv Daya and in support of Sasha Farms which is an animal sanctuary, Manchester, MI (www.sashafarm.org).
On May 11th, 45 Agam Ni Puja was conducted which was attended by over 120 members and it was followed by Swamivatsalya.
Hindi Sankriti Divas was celebrated with tremendous fervor and joy on June 1st. This is one event where Hindi Class teachers and students get to showcase their knowledge of Hindi whilst spreading a social message.
This year's Father’s Day Picnic was held on June 15th at Kensington Park and many kudos to Chintan Shah (Lead), Pratiksha Shah (Food Lead), Jaimik Shah & Dipen Shah (Co-Leads) for making it the biggest and best picnic experience ever.

Under the leadership of Chintan and efforts of several hardworking volunteers, this picnic will be remembered by many for great food, games, raffle prizes and extra seating arrangement.
Starting June 20th, JSGD celebrated its 16th Temple Anniversary. Megh Nandu (Vidhikaar and Sangitkaar) came from Mumbai and gave us an unique experience through his melodious and divine singing. Shetrunjay Bhav Yatra on Friday evening, 18 Abhishek on Saturday June 21st morning, Bhavna in evening and Dhwaja ceremony on morning of June 22nd were all well attended events. Many thanks to Food Coordinator Shreya Shah and EC Ladies for preparing food on Friday and Saturday and thanks to BOT ladies for managing Sunday's Swamivatsalya. During these days, total collection of Gheebolis, Swamivatsalya sponsorships, fixed nakra and general donation was $66,088 total. This is a record breaking collection and EC and BOT would like to thank members who made this possible. Details related to this collection are provided inside. As mentioned in previous Jain Vani, Temple needs some maintenance work. Recently, Temple Shikhar repair work was completed in timely manner and within budget. Such major and minor undertakings will happen as the temple building ages whether they are structural repairs, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, drainage or resurfacing. As our membership and activities keep growing, need for space also keeps growing. Addressing the needs and requirements of our membership comprising of kids, youth, adults and seniors is getting critical. Development of land adjacent to Temple has been discussed before but with potential of major donor contribution, these discussions need to be at more profound level. BOT is in process of forming a renewed Ad hoc Committee to spearhead the project. Upcoming events are Lectures by Pandit Shri Nirmal Sagarji from July 16th through July 22nd, Parshva Padmavati Pujan on July 20th and Panch Tirth Yatra on July 26th. Please contact Vinaybhai Shah or Dipakbhai Shah for Yatra details. Member statements will be mailed soon. Members are requested to contact BOT Treasurer or EC Finance Officer if there are questions. EC Secretary Prakash Shah and Mansi Shah have moved to Houston, TX and we wish them a prosperous future. Prakash will complete his term as Secretary and fulfill all his responsibilities and commitments. Finally, EC and BOT are grateful for the opportunity provided to lead this pietistic and honorable organization. Your support, guidance and encouragement is much appreciated. We sincerely thank all the members for what you have done and will continue to do on the front lines of religious, social and cultural arena.

Recipe of the month
Thuli ki Roti
Ingredients:
1 cup wheat bran (coarse)
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup water (approx.)
salt to taste
While Thuli is wheat bran, the texture and the bran provide a different taste and feel when eating Thuli.
Method 1. Add all the ingredients to prepare a semi soft dough. Cover and keep for 10 minutes. 2. Divide dough into 3 equal portions. Make round balls. 3. Roll each ball to make a small round roti, 1/4" thick. Pinch round marks on the roti with the end of vertical rolling pin or make cuts with a knife. 4. Pre-heat the griddle on a high flame. Lower the flame and place the roti on the griddle. 5. Cook till light brown in color on both the sides. 6. Turn over the roti on a high gas flame. Let it cook and puff on both the sides. 7. Apply ghee and repeat for the other portions. Serve hot with sabzi, kadhi and chutney.

2014 Panch Tirth Yatra
This year, Jain Society has planned a Panch Tirth Yatra on July 26th. In last 5 years, we have visited many centers in East and South, this year we will do one local Yatra – Lansing, MI and 3 residences in in Detroit Metro area. This will be one day yatra. Current plan is to leave from our Farmington Hills temple and go to following temples: - Residence of Bipin and Sohini Shah - Residence of Girish and Asha Shah - Lansing Temple - Residence of Shreyas and Purvi Shah This year, we will be taking only one bus with 50 yatris. Those who wish to join, must register to come in the bus. NO PRIVATE CARS. If you plan to join in this Yatra, please fill out the registration form on the next page and send it back with deposit to the address listed on the form. The cost is estimated at $50 per person. Students of Hindi Pathshala participated in Hindi Sanskruti Diwas (HSD) on Sunday, June 1st. Over 150 people attended the program. The theme for this year’s program was “Bharat Ek khoj/ Discovery of India“. Based on the theme the Beginners 1 class girls did a fashion show of the different poshak/clothes from India. The boys dressed as Master chefs / Swad ke ustad gave the judges a taste of India by preparing a dish from each different states and sharing it with the audience. The Beginner 2 class took us back in time and presented our great leaders from the past and present. It reminded us of their sacrifices and the freedom we enjoy today. Our Intermediate class presented India’s sportsperson who made an impact in the world. From famous cricketers to our top runners they showed them all. Our Intermediate 2 class kids were MC”s, recited poems and performed classical dances. The program highlighted the diversity of India and its rich culture that we want our kids to imbibe away from home. A light meal was served after the program and thanks to all the food volunteers for helping out. Special mention to Hemaben and Vijaybhai Shah for donating $50 for ice cream that was enjoyed by all. Special thanks to Guruji, Vinaybhai and Pravin bhai for gracing the occasion. Hindi class sincerely thanks all the teachers’; volunteers and parents for their time and dedication in teaching our native language. HSC thanks Jain study class, EC and BOT for their support. Showcasing kids performances on Hindi Sanskruti Diwas was a perfect way to end the academic year. JSGD Library Corner Jai Jinendra We are pleased to convey following information to the members of our society. We are putting together a list of the books that we have in our temple library (Gujarati, English and Hindi). So far, we have completed the list of Gujarati books. In coming weeks we will have these lists on JSGD web page. We also have scheduled certain hours during which library can remain open for books check in check out. Detailed information is posted on library door and inside the library room. We have ordered custom made library cabinets to accommodate existing books and taking into account our future needs. We greatly appreciate the contribution by sponsors for these cabinets.
