Success

The recovering addict’s living environment is a key factor in the success of their recovery. Based on a Netherlands study of 4214 people in the general population, as opposed to clinical samples, it was found that the rates of remission from addiction at the 3-year mark was 79%-92% for alcohol abuse/harmful use and 69%-74% for alcohol dependence.

It was also found that relapse rates were only 0%-14% for those who made it to year 1. And by year 3, only 1%-

5% of those who began the study relapsed.

The Need

According to an article in the American Journal of Public Health entitled “Communal Housing Settings Enhance Substance Abuse Recovery”, the authors state, “Substance abuse recidivism after treatment is high for both men and women. Under modern managed care, private and public sector inpatient substance abuse facilities have reduced their services dramatically. Thus, there is a need to develop, evaluate, and expand lower-cost, residential, nonmedical, community-based care options for substance abuse patients.”

An Example

“In a recent experiment, 150 individuals in Illinois were randomly assigned to either an Oxford House (transitional living) or usual-care condition (i.e. outpatient treatment or self-help groups) after substance abuse treatment discharge. At the 24-month follow-up, those in the Oxford House condition compared with the usual-care condition had significantly lower substance use, significantly higher monthly income, and significantly lower incarceration rates.”

Relapse is a Process

Relapse is a process, not a moment in time. According to the CAIM website “Relapse is the process of becoming so dysfunctional in recovery that using seems like a good idea.”

Using …is the last step in the process. When people honestly examine the situations that led up to a relapse they almost always see a sequence of warning signs.

Our Purpose

Jacob’s Safe Houses was founded February 1, 2007 as a place of safe and sober living for women in recovery from drug/alcohol addiction. Many addicts have no alternative, after detox, but to return to the same environment that had previously encouraged their addiction. Jacob’s Safe House is an alternative that provides safe, affordable and drug/alcohol free housing for those serious about their recovery.

In July 2008 we opened a transitional house for men also.

About Us

We are transitional living for individuals in recovery from drug/alcohol addiction. Rent payments include housing in a home setting, unlimited local and long distance phone service, washer and dryer, fully equipped kitchen, bed linens, comforter, pillow, bath/hand towels, limited parking, public transportation, daily local newspaper, enclosed front porch (certain locations), back deck with patio furniture and grill (certain locations), spacious back yard.

Residency Rules/Consequences

While a resident of Jacob’s Safe Houses you must abstain from any drugs, alcohol or mood and mind altering substances.

If you relapse and choose to use, one or more of the following will take place.– Referral to a detox program– Referral to a residential treatment program– Referral to outpatient treatment

AND• Expulsion from Jacob’s Safe Houses

Other Potential Violations

If you violate any of the residency guidelines, you may be discharged from Jacob’s Safe Houses. If you are discharged due to violation of these guidelines, your security deposit may be forfeited. You also forfeit any residency fees already paid.Bringing any mood or mind-altering substances onto the property. Immediate dischargeComing onto the property under the influence. Immediate dischargeBringing people (family included) who are not residents of Jacob’s Safe Houses into your room or onto the grounds without staff permission. Immediate discharge

Rules, con’t

Not adhering to curfew guidelines. 1st offense-verbal warning, 2nd offense-written warning, 3rd offense-discharge.

Not attending a minimum of 3 AA/NA/CA meetings weekly if working or 4 weekly if not working. It is your responsibility to arrange transportation to these meetings. 1st offense-verbal warning, 2nd offense-written warning, 3rd offense-discharge.

Stealing, gambling or participating in any illegal activity on or off the premises. Immediate discharge.

Rules Con’t

Deliberately damaging any property belonging to Jacob’s Safe Houses or any other resident. Immediate dischargeFailure to make timely rental payments. Immediate dischargeTrading with or giving prescribed medication of any kind to another resident. Immediate dischargeActs or threats of physical violence. Immediate discharge.

Further Obligations

All tenants are expected to attend the weekly house meetings. Exceptions will be made for employment, job interviews and treatment obligations (e.g. IOP, therapy etc.)Curfew: Sunday through Thursday – 11:30 PM, Friday, Saturday and Major Holidays – 1:00 AM. Special prior permission needed to extend curfew to attend midnight candlelight meetings. Attendance at these meetings will need to be verifiable.
