Jacob’s Ladder Quilt Block
Uses 3 different fabrics although using 2 fabrics can result is a dramatic design A Jacob’s Ladder combines 9 Patches into a 4 patch. Block Size: 6 inches (9 inches, 12 inches)
Cut
Fabric A – Center Diagonal Row of Ladder 1 WOF (width of fabric) strip 1 ½ inches (1 ¾ inches, 2 1/4 inches), then cut into 14 squares -‐ 1 ½ inches (2 inches, 2 ½ inches)
4 squares – 2 ½ inches (2 ¾ inches, 3 inches) Fabric B – Second Diagonal Row of Ladder
1 WOF (width of fabric) strip -‐ 1 ½ inches (1 ¾ inches, 2 1/4 inches) Fabric C – Outer Diagonal Row of Ladder
1 strip -‐ 1 ½ inches (1 ¾ inches, 2 1/4 inches) by 7 inches (8 inches, 10 inches), then cut into 10 squares -‐ 1 ½ inches (2 inches, 2 ½ inches) 4 squares – 2 ½ inches (2 ¾ inches, 3 inches)
Assemble the Jacob's Ladder Quilt Block
Make 8 half square triangles using the 4 squares of fabric A and the 4 squares of fabric C.
Take one of each fabric and line up with right sides together (printed sides touching each other).
Draw a line diagonally across the top square.
Then draw an additional line ¼ inch along the diagonal line on both sides of it. You now have 3 lines diagonally crossing the square.
Sew along the 2 outside lines (not the middle one).
Cut along the center line being very careful that you leave adequate seam allowance along both halves.
Press open toward the darker fabric. Trim to proper shape and size – 1 ½ inch (2 inch, 2 ½ inch) squares
Repeat for the remaining 3 sets of squares. You now have 8 half square triangles. Assemble the first 2 -‐ 9 Patch. Lay out the 9 squares using 3 fabric A, 4 squares of fabric B and 2 half square triangles
Sew the top three squares, the middle three squares and the bottom three squares together.
Press the seam allowances for the top and bottom rows toward the center square and the middle row toward the outer edge.
Sew the three rows together taking care that the square orientation remains correct.
The second 2 -‐ 9 Patch blocks utilize the remaining squares, 4 fabric A squares, 2 fabric C squares 1 fabric B square and 2 half square triangles arranged as illustrated.
Sew the 3 squares in each row together and press open, the 1st and 3rd rows pressed outward and the middle row press inward.
Sew the 3 rows together.
There are now 4 blocks. Arrange them as illustrated with the ladder portion diagonally crossing the quilt block.
Sew the top 2 blocks together, then the bottom 2. Press open toward the ladder block direction.
Sew the 2 rows together and press open.
