MNSA OCTOBER MEETING CLUB INCENTIVE Date: October 15th Was this cosponsored? : Yes, this event was Co-Sponsored with the Psychology ClubBrief description of the event: This meeting was co-sponsored with the Psychology Club to raise awareness for mental health issues, especially suicide. Talita Ferrara from the Counseling Center and Dale Camhi, the Long Island chair of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) Out of the Darkness Walk, presented about these issues as well. Magnets were sold, and all proceeds were donated to AFSP.

MNSA CARDIO KICKBOXING FUNDRAISER TO “KICK SUICIDE OUT OF THE QUESTION”Date: October 23, 2015 Was this cosponsored? : NoBrief description of the event: Lucille Roberts women’s gym held a cardio kickboxing class for men and women who wanted to donate and support the cause. Magnets were also sold here. All proceeds were donated to AFSP.

Tuesday, September 22 is the "Welcome Back" Meeting which will be held in Madison Theatre from 430-530

Total School Membership:- An initiative taken on by the MNSA for all nursing students to register to be NSNA members.- Dr. Moore will be consulted before any plans are put into action.

Dr. Moore has gathered the EKG calibrators for one of our future meetings.

The Gear Sale dates have been finalized, a doodle document will be created for each MNSA Board Member to sign up for a time in which they can volunteer. The dates are:September 29, Tuesday; September 30, Wednesday; October 1, Thursday

Potential "Party with a Purpose" ideas in honor of Jaclyn Moore:1. An animal shelter since she was a lover of dogs. 2. "The Cope Foundation" which is a non profit geared towards parents who have lost a child.

Good Shepherd Hospice Care is looking to partner with MNSA for students to become volunteers. They also agreed to speak at one of our meetings.

The Peer Mentorship in the nursing lab was discussed. Beginning of Meeting started with a “Year in Review”: Sam & Jaclyn both explained all of the events and opportunities the MNSA has to

Dr. Muldoon spoke about the importance of getting involved in MNSA, including an in-troduction to the new building and the buildings up to date technology. The new building will include 63 computers and double the amount of simulation dolls and hospital beds. Including a birthing mother simulator. On the first floor of the Barba Hagan building there will be all labs. Second and third floors will be offices and doctoral information. The basement will be classrooms with stadium seating. All classrooms will include the newest technology.

Total School Participation was also addressed. 1. Molloy is looking for total school body participation in NSNA.2. This will include discounted rates for all new and existing members3. the more enrollment within the NSNA from Molloy the greater the delegates for

the school.4. MNSA will email the applications to all nursing students5. Giveaways will be given to the first students who apply to NSNA and send back

their application.

Ki Eta Phi speaker attended the meeting: Crystal Johnson She spoke about building the organization within Molloy, and increasing the en-

rollment. The Molloy College Chapter is Kappa Eta Betta The sorority is open to both men and women; they are involved in many commu-

nity events. The sorority only accepts enrollment from Sophomore level students and above.

The meeting ended with a video about the Top Ten Reasons to get involved in NSNA & a giveaway was done!

Ways to help support individuals suffering from mental illness: aware of signs and symptoms, good listening, offer words of encouragement

Avoid snap out of it and cheep up statements Ways to get help: encourage person to call MD for mental health referral, coun-

seling center, school counseling, 911 Venting to friends is not a substitute for treatment, untreated anxiety/depression

will get worse if left alone. National Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1800 273 8255 ended with informational video about suicide/depression

Pam Brenner: Good Shepherd Hospice Volunteer Coordinator Good Shepherd Hospice is both an inpatient unit and a community outreach Patient’s being taken care of t Good Shepherd Hospice require 2 medical doctors

to agree that if the disease follow its natural progression, without treatment, the patient will pass away in 6 months.

The goal of Good Shepherd is comfort care Good Shepherd prides itself on its multidisciplinary teams Volunteer opportunities are being sought after at Good Shepherd 1. In Office Volunteers: requires volunteers to take phone calls, and put together in-

formational packets2. Community visit allows volunteers to visit the homes of hospice patients and

spend time with them3. Comapssionate Shepherds allows volunteers an opportunity to sit one on one with

a patient in Good Shepherd Hospice.4. Bereavement Volunteer allows volunteers the opportunity to make personal phone

calls to family members who have just suffered a loss of a loved one. Good Shepherd has a 16 bed inpatient facility for the acutely ill patients. Good Shepherd will take hospice patients treated at home for a maximum of 5

days to give the family a break from care. Each volunteer is not required to meet a minimum amount of hours Process to get setup as a volunteer is long, requires application, background

checks, and training

Suzanne D. Sova: Cross Country Staffing Employee - Travel Nursing Suzanne had been a travel nurse for 5 years Travelers are of all ages and experiences Incentives are given to traveler’s depending on the need and the type of assign-

ment they are given Travel jobs are increasingly popular and are in high demand Nurses have a say in their jobs and can pick where they would like to travel to.

The need for nurses is greatly increasing therefore, more nurses have greater op-portunities to pick the assignments they want to go on.

Travel nurses do receive benefits: dental, health, and life insurance, plus free housing and housing subsidies.

Some assignments have completion and referral bonuses Each traveler is paired with a recruiter where they will work together to match a

nurse to an assignment

Each traveling nurse must apply for licensure in the state in which they are travel-ing to. Cross country will reimburse the nurse for the cost of licensure in the cho-sen state.

Cross Country staffs nurses at hospitals, clinics and even schools. On average, the travel time for an assignment is 13 weeks If you enjoy an assignment it is possible to reapply to prolong your stay.
