Jackson tops list of campaign big-spenders

    Hamilton Spectator

    $53,736.

Thats the difference between what councillor Tom Jackson and councillor

Robert Pasuta paid to be re-elected last October.Jackson spent the most of any of the successful city hall candidates on his

e-election campaign $53,836. Pasuta, who was acclaimed, easily took theitle for spending the least at $100.

I have never ever taken anything for granted come election time. I had five

worthy opponents this time the most, probably, since elections in the 90s,

Jackson said. I consider myself blessed to have a cross-section of support.

The average amount sitting councillors spent on their re-election campaigns in

he 2010 municipal election was $19,586. Other big spenders were Mountain

councillors Scott Duvall and Terry Whitehead, who each spent around $32,000.

Other spendthrifts were Brian McHattie and newcomer Judi Partidge, at about

    $7,350 each.

The majority of the 92 contenders filed their expenses by Fridays deadline,

hough 19 people including former councillor Dave Mitchell did not submit

heir documents. That means they are not permitted to run in the 2014 election

or any byelection, said Tony Fallis, the citys elections manager.

Six people have requested extensions for their campaign periods to lower their

debt, said Fallis. Those individuals will have until June 30 to raise money and

will be required to file an additional financial statement in the fall.

n terms of donors, Brian McHattie, Brenda Johnson and Russ Powers do not list any corporate or union donations. All oth

successful candidates accepted corporate and union donations. The names of businesses run by the Spallaci, Mercanti,

Valeri and Weisz families appear several times on multiple donor lists.

Wilson Nolan, CEO of Liberty Energy the company currently lobbying the city for a waste incinerator deal donated t

    Bernie Morelli and Sam Merulla.
