Casino War is the newest addition to our table games. This is the fastest, simplest table game to learn and play, and the only game where players can beat the dealer more than 50% of the time.

To play you simply make a bet in the marked area. You and the dealer will each receive a card face up. If your card is higher than the dealer’s, you win even money. If your card is lower, you lose. (Ace is high.)

If your card matches the dealer’s in rank, you can either surrender half your bet or go to War.

When going to War, you and the dealer

match your original bet, putting the money on the layout. You and the dealer each get another card, and if you beat the dealer, you win all three bets. If you lose, you lose.

If you go to War and tie the dealer, not only do you

win, but you win an extra unit. Winning ties when going to War is huge. Because of this rule, you will win 50.3% of the time in Casino War, assuming you never surrender.

Casino War also features a bonus bet on ties. If you bet the tie and your card matches the dealer’s, you win 10 to 1.

This is one war you can win. Check it out.

Have you tried Casino War?

Jackson Rancheria Casino & Hotel will present the Atlanta Rhythm Section on Thursday, March 19, at 7 p.m.

The story of the Atlanta Rhythm Section (ARS) began in Doraville, GA, a small town northeast of Atlanta, in 1970. Local Atlanta engineer Rodney Mills built a new studio in Doraville with the support of music publisher Bill Lowery, producer/songwriter/manager Buddy Buie, and songwriter/guitarist J.R. Cobb.

The studio was dubbed Studio One and would become one of the preeminent studios in the Atlanta area. Over the years, artists who recorded there included Al Kooper, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Joe South, Bonnie Bramlett, Dickey Betts, B.J. Thomas, and Billy Joe Royal.

The Atlanta Rhythm Section originally came together as the house band at Studio One. Buie and Cobb had been part of the group the Classics IV, remembered for hits including “Spooky,” “Stormy,” and “Traces.”

Buie recruited three musicians he had worked with previously in the Candymen, a group that backed Roy Orbison, singer Rodney Justo, keyboardist Dean Daughtry, and drummer Robert Nix.

Two talented local session players also joined in, guitarist Barry Bailey and bassist Paul Goddard.

Buie wanted the best players doing his songs as a guitar based band, and he

wrote, produced, and managed ARS from the start. Buie, Daughtry and Nix did a lot of the songwriting together. The Rhythm Section would play on other performer’s albums three to four days a week and then work on their own material. They recorded a demo featuring instrumentals and over a couple of years pulled together material for an album. The demo got them a two record deal and so ARS officially began.

Like most groups that last over 30 years, ARS went through numerous changes both in personnel and musical styles. They were dubbed “Southern Rock” for a while, a label that never did totally fit them.

But the music of ARS only reached a mass audience on a couple of occasions. The result is that an outstanding song catalog and the talented men responsible for it have been largely overlooked. When those songs are heard, and those talents recognized, the case can be made that ARS is the epitome of all the good things that the phrase “classic rock” implies.

Current members include Steve Stone on guitar, Kim Keeling on drums, Dean Daughtry on keyboards, Andy Anderson on vocals, Justin Senker on bass, and David Anderson on guitar.

Tickets are $40 from Ticketmaster but Dreamcatcher’s Club members can purchase tickets for just $20 at the Jackson Rancheria Box Office. The Box

Sacramento’s Americana phenom Jackie Greene will perform in the Grand Oak Ballroom on Friday, March 20, at 8 p.m.

Jackie Greene is a singer and songwriter, guitarist and keyboard player, acoustic solo artist and electrifying band leader who is reluctant to define himself or his music, although some have called him the “New Dylan”.

He named his latest album “Giving Up the Ghost” for a reason. “The phrase refers to the destruction of certain notions and practices that I used to hold in high esteem,” he says. “I’m just sorta sick of being the kid with the harmonica rack. I don’t want to be Bob Dylan.”

“I’ve always been a folkie guy,” he adds. “Most of my songs have been pretty standard changes, and I’m trying to not do that anymore. I want more unique changes that might not fall into that category. I’m trying to challenge myself to make the music different.”

As he heads out for another year of serious touring, Greene is giving himself and his band the same sort of license he gave himself as a songwriter. “The recording is the recording, and the live show is the live show, and in my mind that’s different, it sounds way different, and that’s good,” he says. “Live is still the best way to experience music, because it’s pretty pure. If you want to hear something the same way over and over, you can listen to the record, but if you want to hear the song, you go hear it live.”

Greene released his first album just six years ago, and has toured with some of the biggest names around, including Buddy Guy, Elvis Costello, Susan Tedeschi, Willie Nelson, B.B. King. and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott.

In addition to performing with his touring band and a crack studio band, he sometimes performs with Phil Lesh & Friends. When the surviving members of The Grateful Dead reunited to play for then presidential candidate Barack Obama in February 2008, Greene was playing with the band.

His new album features the sounds of a talented young performer giving himself room to move, to explore new textures, surprising chord changes, and other characters that may or may not be him. “Ultimately,” he says, “my hope is that these songs will someday ignore their creator and tell their tales all by themselves.”

Tickets are $20 for Dreamcatcher’s Club members at the Jackson Rancheria Box Office or $40 at Ticketmaster. The Jackson Rancheria Box Office is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and accepts cash, credit cards, and Dreamcatcher’s Club points. Must be 18 to purchase tickets or attend the show.

Come to Amador County for a treasure hunt that will lead you on an adventure through historic downtowns, a castle, gold mine, vineyard, water-powered foundry, and Chinese apothecary.

Sign up now for 49er Treasure Trail on Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29. Participants of all ages can explore Amador County while earning prizes and having fun.

Jackson Rancheria Casino & Hotel is proud to be a major sponsor of the event, which benefits the Amador Council on Tourism and the Interfaith Food Bank.

Each downtown has selected a theme and clues will revolve around their theme. As participants visit the historic downtowns they will find people dressed in costumes of a certain era, like the Gold Rush or Roaring ‘20s, or in the case of the town of Volcano they will be pulled into a murder mystery to solve.

There will be a pre-registration and Cocktail Party for the event on Friday, March 27, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Grand Oak Ballroom of the Jackson Rancheria Hotel. This will give participants a head start by getting their program with the rules and map, lanyard and ID, gunny sack to hold tokens and first clue in advance. Participants who pre-register will also have the opportunity to have a complimentary team photo with the event background provided by Jackson Rancheria Casino & Hotel.

Participants can also register and check in Saturday morning between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. at the Amador County Fairgrounds in Plymouth.

There will be a pancake breakfast available at the fairgrounds from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. It includes pancakes with fresh fruit, whipped cream and flavored syrups, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, milk, orange juice, and coffee, all for $10 for adults, $6 for children under ten (free for kids two and under).

The Treasure Trail game hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, allowing time to go back and look at things more closely.

Participants will start the treasure

hunt with a program with rules and map, lanyard and ID, gunny sack to hold tokens, and a first clue. Each team receives a different first clue, so teams will start off in different directions.

Each clue leads to the next one. Solve the clue and receive a token. Prizes will be given for the most tokens collected, plus accomplishments such as traveled the furthest, most fun team, greenest team, etc. Prizes include hotel rooms, meals, merchandise, show tickets, and gift certificates from local merchants. Winners also receive free admission to next year’s event.

The event will culminate with an awards ceremony and lunch at the fairgrounds on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. Tickets are $10. A no host bar with beer and wine will be available.

Registration is $10 per person and teams are encouraged. Visit touramador.com for details and registration forms. For more information, phone 877-TOUR-AMADOR (868-7262) or email [email protected].

Geocachers can also take part in 49er Treasure Trail. Just log in to geocaching.com and enter zip code 95642 to find the clues for the event.

Ron Shock, called by some the world’s greatest storyteller, will headline the Jackson Rancheria Comedy Club on Thursday, March 5.

The show is in the Grand Oak Ballroom at the Hotel. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Must be 18 or older to purchase tickets or attend the show.

Tickets are $20 and are available online or by phone from Ticketmaster or in person at the Jackson Rancheria Box Office. The Box Office is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and accepts cash, credit cards, and Dreamcatcher’s Club points.

Ron says he began doing comedy at age 40 after already having lived a full life which included being a professional jewel thief for the New Orleans mob. Given the option of jail or the military, Ron joined the military and came out with the ability to work with explosives, which led to his next career as a safe cracker. He was very successful until one day - he wasn’t. He was imprisoned in LA County Jail from which he escaped, only to be caught again within minutes of breathing free air.

When leaving the maximum security prison, the guard told him that he’d be back and Ron said “No, I won’t.” In fact, Ron went on to become the Vice President of a Fortune 500 company called McMillan Publishing.

He eventually resigned and moved on to other publishing companies but he felt the corporate world was more crooked than his life as a criminal, so one day at age 40 he just decided to walk away and told his friends that he was going to become a comedian.

That was where Ron got the first laugh of his comedy career, but he remained adamant, promised them he’d never come back, and that they would one day see him on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, a goal he finally achieved being the last new comedian to get their break on that show.

From his first road gig with a young Bill Hicks and Bill Silva until headlining the Las Vegas Strip on his 65th birthday, Ron’s comedy has continued to progress and the stories remain as timeless as the man himself.

“Darby O’Gill and the Little People” is a 1959 Walt Disney Pictures feature film starring Albert Sharpe, Janet Munro, and Sean Connery in a tale about a wily Irishman and his battle of wits with leprechauns.

A New York Times review of the film when it opened praised the cast except for Connery, who was described as “merely tall, dark, and handsome.” This film is reported to have brought Connery to the attention of producer Albert R. Broccoli, who was casting the first James Bond film, “Dr. No.”

“Singin’ in the Rain” is a 1952 comedy musical starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds.

Kelly also directed it along with Stanley Donen and provided the choreography.

It offers a comic depiction of Hollywood’s transition from silent films to “talkies.”

The movie is frequently described as one of the best musicals ever made and is ranked number one on the American Film Institute’s list of the greatest movie musicals of all time.

It includes one of the most famous dance routines ever, with Kelly singing the title song while twirling an umbrella and splashing through puddles.

Seating is limited and these events tend to sell out fast, so RSVP to 800-822-WINN today to reserve your place.

Leland makes sure the General Store always looks great

Leland Ruddock is the Janitor/Custodian for the Jackson Rancheria General Store and takes pride in making sure the place is always clean and neat.

Leland was born in the old Sutter Amador Hospital and attended the former Jackson High School, “home of the Fighting Tigers,” he notes.

He worked a variety of jobs around the area until coming to work for the General Store a little over a year ago. He’s responsible for keeping the entire facility clean, including the Store, Gas Station, and RV & Car Washes.

Next time you visit the General Store, whether to take advantage of the best gas prices around, pick up a quick snack, or get your vehicle washed, when you notice how clean everything is, you’ll know Leland is to thank for that.

Leland says the best part of the job is the real nice group of people he works with. And when not at work, he likes to read and watch TV, especially sports. He’s a big fan of both the ‘Niners and Lakers.

Bob Lyons, General Store Manager, says that “Leland is one of the most kind, caring individuals I have ever met. He always puts others in front of himself and is always deeply concerned about the well being of guests, his co-workers, and the community in general. Leland always has a smile on his face and lifts the spirits of people around him.”

Leland is a perfect example of Rancheria Style™ service.

The historic Kennedy Mine near Jackson is open for tours every Saturday, Sunday and national holidays March through October from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Group tours are also available by advance reservation.

Admission for the hour-and-a-half tour is $9 for ages 13 to adult, $5 for kids 6 through 12, and free to those under 6. You can also get a self-guided tour book from their website or at the mine gift shop. Some like to bring a picnic lunch and just soak in the ambiance of this historic spot.

The Kennedy Mine was one of the deepest mines in North American at 5,912 vertical feet when the U.S. Government closed operating gold mines in 1942 due to World War II. It was also one of the most productive gold mines in the Mother Lode.

Prospected in 1860, reorganized in 1886, and continuously run until 1942, the Kennedy Mine produced approximately $34,280,000 in gold.

The 152-acre site also includes picnic tables, hiking trails, and a gift shop with a large selection of books on the California Gold Rush and gold mining in general.

On the Kennedy Gold Mine surface tour, you will see the mine office building where gold flakes were melted into large

bricks to ship by Wells Fargo to San Francisco.

This is also where ore samples were processed to see if a particular underground area was worthy of further investigation. See the stamp and gold recovery mill, tailing wheels, a steam boiler, and the huge steel head frame whose pulleys guided the miners into the bowels of the earth.

The tour also includes the building where the men changed into their mining garb before dropping nearly a mile underground to work, a video of men working circa 1914, and much more.

The mine is located on Highway 49 just a mile and a half north of Jackson.

For more information call 209-223-9542 or visit www.kennedygoldmine.com.

S h e n a n d o a h Vineyards and Sobon Estate are family-owned wineries with a 31-year reputation for producing the best possible wines using low-yield viticulture and minimum intervention wine making techniques. Sobon family wines emphasize high fruit and low tannins, and are made with sustainably-grown grapes.

Shenandoah Vineyards was founded in 1977 by Shirley and Leon Sobon. They moved from Los Altos, where Leon was a Senior Scientist with Lockheed Research Lab. Leon’s gift for home winemaking led him to begin a new career as a winemaker.

The selection of a winery site in the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County was well researched. Leon and Shirley and their six children moved to the old Steiner Ranch outside Plymouth, planted a vineyard, and converted the old stone garage to the Shenandoah Vineyards winery.

Sobon Estate was formed with the purchase of the D’Agostini winery in 1989.

Over the years, Leon has garnered many national and international awards for Sobon Estate and Shenandoah Vineyards wines. He is widely recognized as a leader in the wine industry and is often sought after as a judge for many prestigious wine tasting competitions.

Today the winemaking and business aspects continue to be a family affair. Shirley is the lead Tasting Room, Gallery & Museum manager. Two sons and one son-in-law currently work full time for the business: Tom Quinn in Sales

and Marketing, Paul Sobon as the Winemaker and Vineyard Manager, and Robert Sobon as Business Systems Manager.

In 1989, the family made the decision to start farming sustainably. After much research, they began using as few chemicals as possible. Their growing practices have evolved over the years, and today include complimentary plantings, beneficial bugs, and other natural growing techniques to encourage healthier grapes and better tasting wines.

They also use composting as a vital way to nourish the soil. They use 600 to 800 tons of compost every year, much of it made from their own grape skins, seeds, and stems.

In 2007, they installed a 50-Kw photovoltaic solar system at the Sobon facility. The system is sized to supply 100% of the electrical needs of the winery,

office and vineyards. The lighting, heating and cooling systems are the most efficient available.

Along with the solar system, the firm recycles cardboard, glass and metal waste. White paper waste from the office is shredded and added to the compost to aid in its breakdown.

The facility’s carbon footprint has diminished to the point where they are more than carbon neutral. They now eliminate more CO2 from the environment than they use, enabling them to sell carbon credits to other industries.

Both wineries are open daily for wine tasting. For more information visit sobonestate.com.
