Approximately 25 years ago my husband and I were married right up here in the foothills at Sutter Creek in a 100 year old church. We enjoyed coming up here to the foothills and visiting the beautiful surroundings, the gorgeous landscapes, and just about everything else the foothills had to offer.

But the one thing we also enjoyed was to occasionally go gamble, and that meant having to make that long trip over the mountains. Well I was so excited one day when my husband told me he had heard that an Indian casino had been built somewhere up in the foothills. Now we had two of our favorite things to do together.

So that very next day we set out to have a wonderful drive and find this new casino which was somewhere up by Jackson. Neither one of us knew what to expect. I just knew that this was the most exciting news to me since now I could come up here to the foothills and get to go gambling and have so much fun.

We found the road that led to the casino. It seemed to keep winding around this hill. As we finally got to the top there it was.

I looked over at

Cliff and I just couldn’t believe my eyes. There it was, the casino, a quonset hut or a large garage-like building. I told Cliff “Are you sure this is it?” He assured me that it was.

There was one security guard walking around the parking lot. My husband jokingly said that the guard looked like he was from Mayberry.

Inside, as I recall, there were two or three card tables and maybe three rows of slot machines, one cashier area, and the Bingo hall, which was probably

bigger than all the other stuff put together.

It was a surprise, but it was really a lot of fun. And soon after that Jackson Rancheria became a regular part of my social life and a big part of my fun time.

Until I wrote this letter I didn’t realize that I have been visiting Jackson Rancheria going on 25 years now.

In the beginning visits were few, due to work and children, but now my children are grown and

I find that I have more time for myself and enjoy Jackson

R a n c h e r i a frequently. My children call the casino my

second home away from home.

We are planning a lot of hot seat drawings throughout the year and you don’t want to miss out.

Please note that during hot seat drawings, our system

randomly selects a machine that is currently in use. Our friendly staff then goes to that machine to verify that a club member is playing that machine with their own card.

If someone else is playing with your card - your spouse, brother, mom, or best friend - then neither of you wins.

You must be playing with your card on the selected machine to win. Good luck!

I love this recipe for an easy, yummy breakfast for a large group, It tastes like it took a lot of work, but you don’t have to admit that it was a snap to assemble. I would love to have something like this in the Rancheria’s Breakfast Buffet.

Spread thawed Hash Browns in a deep 11”x14” pan sprayed with nonstick spray. (I use lasagna pans. Roasting pans also work.)

In a large skillet, lightly brown the Canadian Bacon slices in 3 Tbs of Butter, then remove Bacon and set aside.

In the same skillet, add the

Onion, Peppers, and Mushrooms and sauté, adding more Butter if necessary, until tender and the Onions become translucent.

Spoon the Vegetable mixture over the Cheese layer in the pan. Top with the sliced Tomatoes. Arrange the Canadian Bacon over the Vegetables, overlapping if you need to. Top with the remaining 1½ cups of Cheese.

Whisk the Eggs with the ½ tsp Salt, ¼ tsp Pepper and the Milk in a medium bowl. Pour over the casserole.

Using a spatula, press lightly all over the top to soak with the Egg mixture. Let stand for 15 minutes.

Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, until set and top starts to brown lightly. Cool 5 minutes before slicing.

Is there a Jackson Rancheria employee who always makes you feel special? Or one who went out of their way to make your visit perfect?

Tell us about your experiences with our employees and we may spotlight them in an upcoming issue of The Arrow.

Simply email your comments to Carol Cook at [email protected].

Tell us about your favorite employee

Fifteen years ago Mary Wheeler came to Jackson Rancheria looking for a job that paid better than local fast food places. Little did she know she was starting a career that would last over a decade and make her one of our longest serving employees.

Mary started as a Cashier, then became a Poker Room Hostess and Tournament Director. She worked both Mega Bingo and Rocket Bingo for a while, then spent several years in Security before finally landing in Table Games.

After a year as a Dealer, she became a dual rate Dealer/Supervisor and is now a Floor Supervisor/Pit Boss.

Born in Oklahoma, she went to high school in Missouri. After high school she got married. That didn’t work out, which she notes is typical when you are only 18.

She then went back to school here in Sacramento and studied to become a legal secretary and accountant.

She married again and had a daughter, who is now grown and used to work at Lone Wolf ’s restaurant.

For Mary, the best part of working in Table Games is “the amount of people you can meet in a day. Table Game players usually sit and stay for a while,” she notes. “You can talk to them and get to know

them. Especially on Mondays and Wednesdays when they come in for the tournaments. They all know each other, and talk with each other, or they bring in someone new and introduce them all around. There’s a few who just want to quietly play their game, but many of them are very social.”

Over 15 years Mary has seen a lot of changes here. She recalls the book “Who Moved My Cheese,” often used in training, and notes “This is a living, growing, changing entity and you have to go with the flow, find where your

cheese got moved to.”She knows you can’t

succeed at a fast changing place like this by being inflexible and expecting to come to work each day and have everything be the same.

But she adds “For me, this has been a good place to work. You talk to people who have come here from other casinos and they think working in one place for 15 years is amazing. They ask, ‘how did you do that?’ Much of the casino industry is a Gypsy atmosphere, with people moving around all the time.”

For Mary, though, Jackson Rancheria has proved to be the right place for her. “I moved here so I could raise my child in a rural area, and I stayed. I like being able to go out at night and see stars.”

When not at work, Mary runs a 40 acre ranch near Ione, complete with cattle and chickens.

Mary is one of the quiet, steady, long time employees who demonstrate everyday that Rancheria Style® means providing a comfortable, friendly place for our guests.

Celebrating 25 Years

15

Just two years after Jackson Rancheria opened our first Bingo Hall, Suzy and Jim Gullet established Vino Noceto Vineyard in Plymouth.

It is a small, family-run vineyard and winery, renowned for premium Sangiovese wines. A pioneer in the renaissance of this noble Tuscan varietal, they now have 25-acres of estate-grown grapes and produce eight different Sangiovese wines, as well as a Barbera, a Zinfandel and a wonderful, floral Moscato called “Frivolo.”

One of the best times to stop by and sample their wines is on Saturday, April 17, for their annual Open House and Release Party from 11 a.m. to 5p.m.

The event features great one-day only sales, special tastings, and delectable nibbles and showcases new releases for the 2010 year. Nut Club members may purchase the new reserve releases at this event. Non-members may taste the new releases, but they won’t be available for purchase until their official release.

Jim got started with California wine as a teenager visiting Napa wineries with family and friends. Later, a favorite outing during Jim & Suzy’s courtship in the early seventies was a weekend afternoon of leisurely wine tasting and picnicking in Napa or Sonoma. Jim took several courses at the UC Extension in San Francisco with Jim Olsen and Mel Knox. These broadened his wine horizons beyond the Franco-Californian Cabernet-Chardonnay axis.

In 1984, Jim & Suzy began pursuit of their dream with a vague, but well-researched,

Celebrate Vino Noceto’sOpen House & Release Party

idea of growing grapes. They purchased 21 acres in Amador County’s Shenandoah Valley. They added another 18.5 adjacent acres with an 1887 ranch house several years later. “Our objective became to grow a noble grape variety and make it into a distinctive, accessible table wine,” asserted Jim.

Jim understood that Shenandoah Valley required warm weather grapes. Candidates were the Rhone varieties, central Italian varieties, and Zinfandel. Jim noted, “We have a predisposition toward being different. That, the seeming glut of Zinfandel, and market confusion about Syrah led us to Sangiovese or Aglianico.” After much discussion with the folks at UC Davis, acquiring quality

Aglianico budwood seemed beyond their capabilities. They located Sangiovese Grosso at Montevina and three Sangiovese clones of uncertain parentage at UC Davis.

In 1985, Jim and Suzy spent two weeks in Tuscany visiting wine estates, learning more, and defining their grape growing and winemaking practices.

Beginning with their first 1990 vintage, Noceto wines have been 100% Sangiovese, targeted at a Chianti Classico style. This style emphasizes the delicate and complex fruitiness of the Sangiovese grape. More recently, the Riserva Sangiovese has sometimes been blended with a small amount of Barbera or Syrah.

Stop by and taste these distinctive wines. The tasting room is open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekends 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment. For more information visit noceto.com.

JACKSON RANCHERIA CASINO & HOTEL THE ARROW • APRIL 201017

For 32 years jazz fans have been flocking to Amador for the annual Mother Lode Hot Jazz Party, and during that time it has been primarily guided by just two dedicated couples.

The party was originally started in 1978 by Neil and Bernice Stark of Sutter Creek, proprietors of the National Hotel in Jackson, with help from the Natural Gas Jazz Band, who continue to perform at the party.

Jim and Sherry Hubbart, also of Sutter Creek, began helping with the event in 1991 and stepped in to take over when the Starks retired in 1995.

Following Jim’s death in 2005, Sherry kept the tradition going. She’s had a lot of help through the years from her son Ed Woollett and from Jan and Ellie Buhert, who became co-directors in 2005.

Sherry says “it was tough” after Jim died, “but it was something he loved.” She also believes that “whereever you live, you have to give something back.”

And the Jazz Party has definitely given back to the community. From the very beginning the event has been a fund raiser for local charities, raising over $300,000 throughout the years.

Born in Oregon, she met Jim in Washington and they were married for 33 years. After owning three county newspapers they retired to Sutter Creek. Jim played clarinet when he was much younger, but hadn’t played for over 20 years until he retired. Within a month after taking it back up it was playing in

a band, and two years later he formed his own band, the Jasstown Revelators, which later become the JassCity Jazz Band.

Looking back over the many years of coordinating all the pieces that go into an event like this, Sherry says she’s seen many changes. “Back then the sound equipment at the venues was very rugged. There was a pipe with the mic stuck in it, and the drummer carried his drums in and out of every venue.” Now the event provides drums, a piano, and sound equipment at all venues.

Sherry also recalls when she bought her first Cadillac from Prospect Motors that she had to make sure a piano would fit in the trunk. That has been a major requirement for every vehicle since, it must be able to haul a piano.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the support so many people provide to make sure the majority of the money goes to the charities. The bands play for very little and many, many people throughout the community have donated everything needed to produce a multi-venue, multi-band event like this. There are even people who buy tickets each year just to support the charities and the music.

Jackson Rancheria has been involved with the event for over ten years, originally providing shuttles between the venues and recently assuming sponsorship of the entire event.

But ask anyone who has been coming to the event over the years and they’ll tell you, Sherry Hubart is the one who has kept the tradition going, kept the good times rolling.

If you’re looking for jazz excitement on wheels, look no further. The fresh and exciting Catsnjammer Jazz Band has been one of Sacramento’s most popular groups for the past 29 years.

The combination of “show” band energy and traditional jazz elegance has kept the band a favorite around Northern California and at festivals and clubs.

Der Jammerband’s big songbook contains more than 300 tunes, from top notch traditional New Orleans to San Francisco-style jazz, plus an occasional contemporary tune. You’ll hear everything from early 1900’s tunes through the Beatles. Unlike many early-style jazz bands, this band never forgets its responsibility to entertain an audience. “We’re tight, we’re hot, and we’re fresh. I want people on their feet when we finish a set,” says Gene Berthelsen, the band’s head jammer.

Over the years, the Catsnjammer Jazz Band has evolved considerably. “This may be the best Catsnjammer band ever,” Berthelsen says. “Bob Embry, on clarinet, takes us to a whole new level of virtuosity, and Trent Teague is that rare drummer who has both power and taste. This is tremendously exciting for us.” In addition, Brian Richardson is one of the finest trombone players in the country today.

The seven-piece Catsnjammer Jazz Band, formed in 1980, performs regularly around Sacramento and at clubs and festivals as far away as Canada and Las Vegas. The band, over the past several years, has continued to grow as a highly disciplined, and if not restrained, at least responsible organization. It is featured each year at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee and has recently been popular at festivals and jazz societies up and down the West Coast.

The Catsnjammers were chosen to represent the Sacramento Jubilee on the ABC network show “Good Morning America” The

band has released its fourth album, “Live at the Sudwerk!” and has three other successful albums, “Live at Shake’s!,” “Live on the Delta King!,” and “Live at Laughs Unlimited.”

Catsnjammers is comprised of leader Gene Berthelsen on cornet; Bob Embry on clarinet; Brian Richardson, the droll Englishman on trombone; showman Kurt Abell on banjo and guitar; Jean Levinson on tuba; and, returning after a four year absence to bring up his young son Stavros, Trent Teague on drums, and Jim Maihack on piano.

Gene, Brian, Kurt, and Trent all sing. Put on your dancing shoes or just kick back and enjoy!

CREOLE jAzz KIngS

A few grad students from CSU Stanislaus and Fresno State were moping over a pitcher of beer one night back in 1986. They were all music majors, bored with the daily life of a student and singing barbershop in the pizza joints for

beer. Someone said “Let’s start a band!”

Just like the old Mickey Rooney movies, the Creole Jazz Kings were born. With a lot of enthusiasm, a bit of talent, and lots on encouragement from the founding fathers of the Modesto Dixieland Jazz Society, the Creole Jazz Kings played their first gig in 1986.

The band went on to become favorites of many jazz societies and festivals, performing nearly 2,000 gigs in the past 20 years, including multiple appearances at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, plus Monterey, Sisters Oregon, Pismo Beach, Three Rivers, Fresno, and many others.

The Creole Jazz Kings have been

playing at The Barking Dog in Modesto every Wednesday since July 2007.

Current members include leader Dan Talbert on trombone and vocals, Dave Johnson on cornet, trombone and vocals, Tom Schmidt on reeds and vocals, Daryl Hosick on piano, Keith Blatz on tuba and vocals, Joe Runnels on drums, and Al Boomer on banjo and vocals.

From this group you will hear West Coast Jazz, blues, lots of great vocals, standards, and most of all, “Hot Jazz a la Creole Jazz Kings!”

dR. BACH And THE jAzz PRACTITIOnERS Dr. Bach and the Jazz Practitioners

are an ultra high energy group of talented and experienced musicians who show their enjoyment while playing Dixieland, swing, dance, blues and gospel.

The group of eight musicians includes two vocalists - Jim Elsaas (who also plays banjo) and Angela Elsaas.

Leader and trumpeter Charlie Gehlback (Dr. Bach) is joined by Bob Noren on clarinet and sax, Jay Paulus on trombone, Barbara Beland on piano, Jerry Lopes on tuba and string bass, and Gene Copelan on drums.

The band features a tuba-banjo sound for traditional tunes and a string bass-guitar sound for swing.

They have performed at Jazz Clubs, churches, and fairs throughout Northern California as well as at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee for the last nine years.

jASSCITy jAzz BAnd

JassCity Jazz Band was formed in the early 1990s by Jim and Sherry Hubbart under the name Jasstown Revelators. When Jim retired in 2004 Bob Sakoi took over and following Jim’s death in 2005, the name Revelators was retired and the band became the JassCity Jazz Band.

JassCity has continued with the same swinging beat, the most requested fan favorites plus some new numbers, all in the tradition started more than a decade ago.

Leader Bob Sakoi (trumpet) started his musical career playing in the Dixie band at Great America theme park. He worked his way through college playing Latin music in clubs and on the radio. After playing with many big names in Las Vegas, Bob became involved in the traditional jazz scene.

Bob Edson (trombone and vocals) put himself through engineering school at Oregon State playing trombone and managing dance bands. He’s a former Navy helicopter pilot and retired engineer.

Manny Costancio (banjo, guitar, and vocals) joined the Navy to become a boxer and retired as a bandmaster. He’s involved in several groups and is featured vocalist on some of JassCity’s most requested tunes.

Bob Stover (drums) is a UOP graduate, retired music educator, private drum teacher, and full time musician. In addition to performing at jazz shows and making his own recordings, he is the principal percussionist with the Stockton Symphony.

Wes Grant (piano) is the son of a big band leader. He began playing trumpet at age 12, then turned to piano a few years later. Today he is proficient on both instruments.

Dick Douty (bass) is probably best known for his tuba playing, including with the San

Francisco Symphony and San Francisco Opera Orchestra. He has performed with numerous groups and fronted several bands. He served as tuba player with the Creole Jazz Kings Band for 12 years before joining JassCity.

Don Reiss (reeds) is one of the newer members of the band, after playing for many years with the Hogin’s Heroes Band. He is a retired airline pilot, deacon and choir members of his church.

California. In addition to playing fairs, jazz parties,

and other events, the group likes to work with schools to reintroduce this nearly forgotten music.

The group was founded by Dwayne Ramsey, Mike Ross, and Craig Strode. Dwayne plays clarinet and saxophone. He’s been playing all types of music since childhood but dearly loves “Dixie.”

Mike has been known for many years as the unofficial “king of jazz drums” in the Bay Area.

Craig on trumpet has been playing all kinds of music for most of his life, but loves the Dixieland style the best.

Joining them are George Fiedler on piano, the only member of King Cotton to hold a gold card in the prestigious Sacramento Jazz Society, Randy Reaves on bass, who’s hard driving bass and singing are a welcome addition, and Les Webb, who was originally an accordion player but switched to trombone.

Together they are King Cotton, a fun and exciting group. This is the real stuff, so clap your hands and stomp your feet - King Cotton Jazz Band is here to play.

MIdnIgHT ROSE jAzz BAnd

Midnight Rose Jazz Band features one of the most exciting and unusual front lines on the jazz festival circuit. The group is known as much for its energy and hilarity as for its entertaining musical interpretation.

Their style is best described as eclectic, mainstream Dixieland Swing with a taste of feature and novelty tunes thrown in.

Prominent on the front line are two sisters, Nancy Kreis on clarinet and leader Dannie Balser-Singinghawk on trumpet. Both were born in Chicago and became interested in music at a very young age. Dannie started

on piano before turning to the trumpet, and Nancy had a brief encounter with the violin before falling in love with the clarinet.

Rounding out the front line are three accomplished gentlemen, distinguished by both their talent and bravery - Ken O’Brien on trombone and vocals, Reuben Smith on string

bass and tuba, Carl Warmdahl on drums, and Ben Marcelo on piano. All live in Northern California.

MISSIOn gOLd jAzz BAndThe Mission Gold

Jazz Band was formed in the early 1980’s and has a long tradition of performing famous jazz artists’ works.

Several members have been together since the band’s inception. All enjoy the opportunity to play for the Fremont community monthly at Pizza Depot and Mission Coffee. Their musical backgrounds range from traditional jazz to swing, Chicago and Dixieland.

Leader and trombonist John Soulis has listened to Dixieland since his pre-teens, when he first heard recordings such as the Fire House Five +2. He has played trombone since grade school and has performed in various bands including Emperor Norton’s, Cell Block 7, All That’s Jazz, The Spirit of ’29, and Jelly Roll Band. He formed Mission Gold in the early 1980’s.

Andy Parker of drums is a walking encyclopedia of 1920’s era jazz, who played with Papa Do Run Run for ten years.

Bob Sterling on Tuba is the band director at Kennedy High School in Fremont. He was introduced to Dixieland jazz by John Soulis, who also convinced him to join Mission Gold.

On clarinet is John Stringer, who started out in Liverpool, England, as a classical musician before switching to traditional jazz. He has also played in the Apex Jazz Band, Professor Plum’s Jazz, and the 52nd Street Revival Jazz Band.

Banjologist Jack Wiecks started a long time interest in traditional jazz in high school. After trading his ukulele for a banjo, he went on to play with Professor Plum, Churchill Street, Silicon Gulch, and others before joining Mission Gold in 1996.

Dick Williams is a well known Bay Area cornetist. He was a co-founder of Jazzin Babies and played with the Desert City Six as well as Good Tyme JB, Alcatraz Angels and others before joining Mission Gold.

Also on cornet is Thomas Banuelos who has a B.A. in music from Cal State Hayward. He began playing traditional jazz in college where he played with the Section 7 Dixieland Band for over four years.

The group’s regular gig is at the Swiss Park Dance Hall in Newark.

nATURAL gAS jAzz BAnd

The San Francisco based Natural Gas Jazz Band has been delighting its audiences since 1970. This surprising longevity of 40 years is the result of a singularly stable band lineup, a musical book of broad appeal, and gifted musicians who enjoy creating jazz together.

The band is strongly imprinted with the influences of its late San Francisco friends, jazz legends Lu Watters and Turk Murphy. Former Murphy and Watters sidemen have been longtime band players as well as frequent substitutes. Its book is also rich with the music of Jelly Roll Morton, Bix Beiderbecke, Fats Waller, and others. Expect to hear stomps, blues, rags, marches, spirituals, and dances of all moods and tempos.

Riding on the popularity of its music, the NGJB members have become internationally known ambassadors of jazz. Their travels have taken them from coast to coast and border to border in the U.S. and around the world. The band recently returned from their third tour of

Australia.Jazz festival

appearances include repeated visits to most of the country’s major events, including Sacramento, Monterey, Pismo Beach, San Diego, to name a few of the California venues. The Bix Fest in Davenport, Iowa, has featured the NGJB repeatedly, as has the Swing’n’Dixie Jazz Jamboree in Sun Valley and the Arizona Classic Jazz Festival.

One reviewer said of the band, “Everything about their performance sparkled: the virtuosity of the individual musicians, the variety of tunes and complete mastery of different styles, great arrangements and the band’s incredible tight execution. After 39

years, they still sound fresh and exciting.”With the band since the early ‘70s are

cornetist Phil Crumley (retired periodontist),), drummer Warren Perry (lawyer), and soprano saxophonist Bob Murphy (music student, teacher, and performer). Trombonist Bill Carson (retired physician) has brought his many years of experience with the popular Professor Plum’s Jazz into the Gassers’ organization. Pianist Rich Owens (hazardous materials professional) brought his high-energy improvisations to the group and has created some outstanding musical inter-actions in the ensemble. Banjoist Carl Lunsford, formerly with the Turk Murphy Jazz Band, and tuba player Jim Brennan, with many years experience with many bands, round out the personnel.

The Amador County Unified School District Jazz Band is comprised of junior high and high school students from Amador and Argonaut High Schools, and Jackson and Ione Junior High Schools. It is a Zero-period full-credit course that meets from 7 to 8 a.m. five days a week. The band’s motto is “We don’t get up at 5 a.m. to be serious!”

The band performs locally for school concerts and community events and travels near and far to participate in various educational jazz festivals. The student’s enthusiasm comes across with each note. They are pleased to have the opportunity to play music outside of the normal concert band curriculum and expand their music education.
