The music is vintage and the line-up perfect. The Kid is joined by Louis Nelson, Manny Paul, Charlie Hamilton, Joe ‘Twat’ Butler and Sammy Penn.

‘Barber In Berlin’ is one of the most popular albums in Chris Barber’s discography. Almost exactly a year later the band was back in Berlin. No-one can remember the concert being recorded, but in 2015 a set of tapes appeared and this is the resulting CD. The band is on cracking form with solo turns from all the favourites, Monty Sunshine, Pat Halcox, the leader himself and, of course, Ottilie Patterson.

Steve Lane is one of the unsung heroes of British Traditional Jazz. Trumpeter Lane formed his first band in 1949 and remained doggedly loyal to the Classic style of Jazz typified by King Oliver, Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton in the 1920s. Steve remained semi-professional all his life, but was highly respected as a mentor to many aspiring Jazz musicians. In addition to playing Steve also ran three record labels, VJM, Halcyon and Azure. This compilation includes tracks with the Southern Stompers and 5 tracks by the VJM Washboard Band.

OTTILIE PATTERSON – Blues Book and Beyond

LACD296 1 CD £12.99

The original album Blues Book & Beyond is classic blues, R ‘n’ B material and a couple of her original compositions, enhanced with previously unreleased tracks - 4 from Ottilie Swings the Irish EP - and 3 which had limited release. 23 tracks including Bad Spell Blues and Kansas City Blues.

Reputedly there was a jam session which took place in 1928 when Louis Armstrong was passing through Chicago and Bix Beiderbecke was playing there. They met for an afterhours session. The two were then young men at the peak of their powers. We have imagined that session and two of the world’s leading exponents of the styles - Enrico (Louis) and Andy (Bix) - come together to bring it alive with the help of other leading players of vintage Jazz, including ‘Spats’ Langham, Malcolm Sked and Nicholas D. Ball. This is ‘hot’ Jazz at its best!

New Orleans to London & Back to the Delta – KEN COLYER 1953-54

LACD209 1 CD £12.99

Classic Recordings from 1953 and 1954 featuring Chris Barber, Monty Sunshine, Lonnie Donegan and Acker Bilk. Originally issued as LACD14 this re-issue includes the first UK issue of rare alternate ‘Delta’ sides.

Monty Sunshine was a British Trad great – he was in the legendary Crane River Jazz Band, in Ken Colyer’s first Band and also in Chris Barber’s Jazz Band throughout the 1950s and was the soloist on Petite Fleur. He also ran his own band from 1961 into the 2000s. This compilation has rare and previously unissued tracks alongside many commercially available tracks by Monty & features Ken Colyer, Chris Barber, Charlie Galbraith, Beryl Bryden and Johnny Parker.

ALEX WELSH & FRIENDS

LACD295 1 CD £12.99

The wonderful Alex Welsh Band and Alex’s friends are guitarist Diz Disley, trombonist George Chisholm, singer Beryl Bryden and bass saxophonist Harry Gold. All legends of British Jazz. The set is of previously unreleased ‘live’ material and very well recorded. Several of the tunes Alex never recorded commercially. These recordings from 1958-1960 find the band & friends on exceptionally fine form!

Freddy Randall was one of the legends of British Jazz. A fiery trumpeter who followed the Chicago/Dixieland route and, until Alex Welsh established his band, led the finest band of its type in the UK. This CD comprises the last set of recordings he made with his own band in 1957 and a set recorded under the name of Britain’s Greatest Jazz Band in 1972. Both bands contained top class musicians and included on the CD are Dave Shepherd, George Chisholm, Brian Lemon, Al Gay, Pete Hodge, Gerry Salisbury, Kenny Baldock, Syd Boatman, Johnny Richardson and Buzz Green.

Another in the Vintage Recording Project series - a CD of the music of Bix Beiderbecke - a look at the tunes we know Bix played but never recorded and some tunes current at the time which he might have played. The result turned out to be hugely satisfying with some top-notch playing: Andy Schumm is one of the finest interpreters of Bix’s music today & he is joined by Kristoffer Kompen, Mauro Porro, David Boeddinghaus, Frans Sjöström & Josh Duffee.

With their good humour, attention to detail and varied repertoire the JLJB have built up a considerable following in just over two years. This is their second CD for LAKE and it was their previous one (LACD330) which propelled them from obscurity to being very much in demand in both Jazz Clubs and Folk Clubs the length and breadth of the UK. Blues & Rhythm magazine said that their music had a “knockabout, good-time feel” which just about sums it up!

LAKE’s fastest selling title ever! A triple CD set for the price of one! Of the 73 tracks many are previously unissued or extremely rare. The narrative in a 40 page booklet puts the bands and the music into perspective. Its popularity gave birth to the At A Tangent Series – the latest of these is on page 2, and all of the titles are still available.

This series charts the great British bands of the Trad revival. Originally on the pioneering Esquire record label, these tracks are a perfect snapshot of the early years of the jazz revival.

Volume 1 features Cy Laurie, Christie Brothers Stompers, Ken Colyer, Bob Mickleburgh’s Bobcats, Tony Short Trio, Dave Carey & Beryl Bryden.

Volume 2 has tunes from Acker Bilk, Crane River Jazz Band, Bobby Mickleburgh’s Bobcats, Brian Wooley’s Jazzmen & Mick Gill’s Jazz Band.

Volume 3 features Sandy Brown, Bobby Mickleburgh’s Bobcats, Mike Daniels’ Delta Jazzmen, Humphrey Lyttelton, George Chisholm and Kenny Ball.

Volume 4 showcases Chris Barber, Merseysippi Jazzband, Lew Jowett & The Second City Jazzmen.

From the LAKE Year Series of Chris Barber retrospective, here covering 1959 – 1962 over three CDs. They include a number of EPs, singles and some previously unreleased items. Personnel include Monty Sunshine, Pat Halcox and Ottilie Patterson. Chris Barber had added the Blues guitar towards the end of the 1960s, the 1970s saw the renaming of the Jazz Band to the Jazz & Blues Band. All the 70s tracks are unique to this CD.

The early years are represented here with much previously unreleased material plus EP favourites, including portrait EPs of Monty Sunshine, Pat Halcox, Ottilie Patterson and Chris Barber himself. Full details on the Upbeat Mailorder Website – or call and they will be sent to you.

The first CD is of a concert to mark the band’s 10th anniversary in 1958 and again features the singer, Neva Raphaelo. The second CD is a set of studio recorded tunes marking Peter Schilperoort’s return to the band, after a couple of years’ absence. There is also the added bonus of four tracks from a very rare EP by the Dim Kesber Quartet.

The Lyttelton Band at its finest at the end of the 1950s. Two classic LPs, ‘Humph Dedicates’ and ‘Triple Exposure’ plus previously unreleased material make up this collection from 1959 reissued on a double CD for the price of one. In 1959 Humphrey Lyttelton and His Band recorded two LPs and a single. All are included in the collection.

OTTILIE PATTERSON – That Patterson Girl

LACD244 1 CD £12.99Britain’s best loved and most sought-after Blues singer! This CD contains 23 tracks in all, including 11 previously unreleased songs or versions of songs. When Ottilie Patterson appeared at the Royal Festival Hall in 1955 with Chris Barber’s Jazz Band, George Melly described her as Bessie Smith reincarnated. This CD charts that development, includes 11 tracks never previously released and three songs only available here. This is one of Lake’s best selling CDs in the history of the label!

Ken Colyer remains one of the leading cult figures of British Traditional Jazz. He epitomises, and is the Godfather for, the purist New Orleans approach. This CD, part of Lake’s mid-price ‘year’ series, introduces what has become known as the ‘classic’ Ken Colyer Jazzmen of the 1950s. It comprises all the recordings made for the Decca and Tempo labels in 1956 by both the Jazzmen and the Skiffle Group including ‘Club Session With Colyer’ considered to be his finest recordings ever.

The arch New Orleans purist of British Trad Jazz with ‘live’ recordings made in Germany in 1966. Colyer carved out his own niche eschewing commercialism. In the 1950s and 60s Trad Jazz was as big in Germany as it was here and the bands toured there regularly. Ken Colyer first went there every year from 1953 and this CD was recorded during his Autumn tour of 1966. The band was on terrific form and the CD includes four previously unreleased tracks and some tunes Colyer never recorded anywhere else.

JEFF BARNHART & SPATS LANGHAM – We Wish We Were Twins

LACD342 1 CD £12.99

Aside from reissue albums Jeff Barnhart and Spats Langham have appeared on more LAKE CDs than any other artists, but they have never before appeared on the same ones. Over the years that Jeff has been coming to the UK he and Spats have performed together in bands, in quartets and as a duo. They have a mutual admiration for each other’s work so it seemed high time to put them together. The result is 21 tracks (79 minutes) of joyous, high calibre music making.

REMEMBERING PAT HALCOX

LACD338 2 CDS £12.99

When Pat Halcox joined Chris Barber’s Jazz Band in the early 1950s it started a remarkable career and produced the longest serving partnership in Jazz as Pat held the trumpet chair until 2008. CD 1 has Pat playing with Chris Barber’s band, with a few tracks from each decade with guests Alex Welsh and Kenny Ball. CD 2 has Pat guesting with other bands - including Humph’s and Alex Welsh’s - playing with American visitors Art Hodes and Don Ewell & fronting his own All Stars. Recorded in April 2015 at the legendary Dew Drop Social and Dance Hall in Mandeville, Louisiana on the northern shore of Lake Ponchatrain. It was a stormy day and the band and recording team only just made it to the venue! But the trip was well worth it as you will hear! 18 tracks with Brian Carrick and his clarinet leading an ace team of New Orleans musicians.

This recording dates from August 1982 and was made at the Ultrasonic Studio in New Orleans, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Other band members are Freddie Lonzo, Ralph Johnson, Sam Mooney, Les Muscutt, Brian Turnock and Stanley Williams.

A dream reissue - all the Henry Allen New York Orchestra’s Victor recordings made between 1929 and 1930, as well as those featuring the Spivey Sisters. Also here are four titles by the Luis Russell Orchestra, comprising largely the same musicians. The sidemen were handpicked by Allen and Russell and are regarded as among the finest of their era. Long before Ellington and Basie, this is where swing really started.

This set won the New York Times Award ALBUM of the MILLENNIUM! 99 tracks over 4 CDs containing what is undoubtedly one of the most important bodies of work in the entire history of jazz – and that’s a quote from The Gramophone Good CD Guide!

The Hamfats combined blues and popular material. Trumpeter Herb Morand and clarinettist Odell Rand joined Joe and Charlie McCoy and Horace Malcolm on piano to play music both cultivated and down home. The result? Goodtime music, played with the skill and panache of experienced session men. Irresistible. Remastered with a full discography.

Skiffle was a marvellous amalgam of blues, jazz and swinging folk and some of the best & most important music is presented here. There are 100 tracks in total with copious notes. Artists include Lonnie Donegan, Ken Colyer’s Skiffle Group, Chris Barber’s Skiffle Group, Vipers Skiffle Group, 2.19 Skiffle Group and many more.

4 CDs, 98 tracks re-mastered by John RT Davies from Memphis’ two great jug bands of the 78 RPM era! Also includes rare solo sides from Will Shade, Minnie Wallace, Hattie Hart, ‘Casey Bill’ Weldon and Vol Stevens. Full discography included. A popular favourite.

Back by popular demand! 100 tracks over 4 CDs - digitally re-mastered and fully annotated. Featuring King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Johnny Dodds, Jelly Roll Morton, Clarence Williams, Lovie Austin, Ida Cox, Alberta Hunter, Dave Nelson, Ethel Waters, Fletcher Henderson, Trixie Smith, Miff Mole & many more.

This anthology celebrates the recorded legacy of clarinettist Jimmie Noone, from his earliest recordings until his final studio session. The timespan encompasses the evolution of the music itself. Noone proved equal to these challenges. Yet throughout, he remained true to his own musical values formed during his boyhood in New Orleans before he worked his way upriver to Chicago. Noone’s most important and influential period began in Autumn 1926 when he took up residence at the Apex Club in Chicago with his own group that eventually included pianist Earl Hines. 96 sides over 4 CDs.

Gennett started with popular and classical music, but by the early 1920s it was clear that great profits lay with jazz. They signed the New Orleans Rhythm Kings whose first four sides are here. Success was immediate and Gennett spread their net wider with Miff Mole, King Oliver, Bix Beiderbecke, Johnny Dodds, and Louis Armstrong. Fully annotated box set.

Sidney Bechet was the first important jazz soloist on record in history (beating Louis Armstrong by a few months). He was a brilliant soprano saxophonist and clarinettist with a wide vibrato. A master at both individual and collective improvisation within the genre of New Orleans jazz. This 97 track set, presents the best of the early Bechet in numerous different settings.

This profile of clarinettist Edmond Hall (1901-1967) – one of the greatest of the New Orleans jazz giants – makes a superb addition to the Retrospective jazz list. Hall’s individual style was instantly recognizable, with its broad, fast vibrato. His was hot, fiery music, full of drive and biting attack – yet he possessed a wonderful feeling for the blues.

A jazz treat! This CD covers 21 years of one of the all-time greats of the trumpet: Billy Butterfield. What’s New? was the title of his first big success with Bob Crosby. In addition to featuring all the milestones of his career from 1938 to 1959, this CD presents many gems from long-deleted 10 inch LPs of the 50s made when he was at the peak of his powers. George Hulme wrote in Just Jazz Billy Butterfield was one of the finest jazz and Big Band trumpeters. The set has excellent quality transfers. The playing time is generous. I strongly recommend this CD.

Adding to Retrospective’s growing roster of great jazz trumpeters – a double CD devoted to the career of one of the all-time great jazz entertainers, one-armed New Orleans trumpeter Wingy Manone. Here we trace his career from his earliest recordings in 1924 to his vintage years leading his own band through to 1964. 40 years of great jazz!

The most sophisticated, the most gloriously fashioned – and, for some, the best – Dixieland jazz on record. That is jazz maestro Digby Fairweather’s verdict on these joyous performances by the great jazz trombonist Abe Lincoln. Remarkably this is his first solo CD and it covers his finest work with Matty Matlock’s Rampart Street Paraders during the mid-50s. Nearly 80 minutes covers 18 titles that include both familiar favourites The Sheik Of Araby and Shim-Me-Sha-Wabble and little-known numbers like The March Of The Mustangs and Peruna.

A centenary tribute to Jay McShann with a superb programme covering every aspect of this great jazzman at his ebullient best. This American jazz pianist and bandleader enjoyed a long career during which he carried the flame of Kansas City jazz at its Count Basie-inspired finest, as well as being acknowledged as a truly great blues artist. During the early 40s his band was the training ground for such stars as Charlie Parker.

Retrospective celebrates the centenary of ‘Mad Mab’ – the saxophonist bandleader Charlie Barnet (1913-1991) – with a superb double CD selection of his great band in full flight during its finest years. He led one of the very best bands of the 40s. A millionaire playboy, he lived riotously and married 11 times. Musically he would not compromise & always got his way, as in his pioneering employment of black musicians in a 1930s white band! The Right Idea gives 50 examples of the band in its heyday, led off by his famous theme tune Cherokee. All his best-known tracks are here.

Covering his career from his time with the Bucktown Five in 1924 to his performances in the mid-50s with the likes of Earl Hines. Includes all 16 of the superlative Ragtime Band recordings of 1939 - ‘The Great Sixteen’. Also all eight of the quartet recordings he made with Sidney Bechet as ‘The Bechet-Spanier Big Four’ – both high points in the history of classic jazz.

Trombonist Wilbur De Paris had a long apprenticeship with Duke Ellington, but his golden years of the 50s, enshrined on these two Retrospective CDs, genuinely extended the boundaries of traditional jazz. For him, jazz was a living art and as hot as mustard. This is New Orleans Jazz at its very best – over two & a half hours of invigorating jazz!

This collection is very much the cream of the crop for Jug Band Music from the 20’s and 30’s. There are.25 original tracks featuring the cream of the crop, including The Memphis Jug Band, Dixieland Jug Blowers, Clarence Williams’ Jug Band and many more. Tracks include Boodle-am Shake, Ankle Strut, Ripe Green Tomatoes and The Jug Band Special.

This collection was compiled by Ray Crick, with final restoration and remastering by Alan Bunting. Les Paul plays electric guitar on all tracks, and the CD was recorded in Les Paul’s home studio (from late 1947). It contains 26 of his finest tracks from 1925-1928 with his Hot Fives and Sevens. Artists here include Johnny Dodds, Earl Hines, Lonnie Johnson, Kid Ory and Don Redman.

A superb 2 CD survey of one of jazz’s all-time greats, Lionel Hampton – the virtuoso of the vibes. Lionel Hampton (1908-2002) was a true giant of jazz, a flamboyant showman who was an indefatigable bandleader, drummer, pianist, singer and, above all, the most famous vibraphone player in jazz history – the first to use it as other than a novelty. These are his 48 finest tracks.

This is the only CD available devoted to ‘Tesch’, the great jazz clarinettist described by Benny Goodman as: “perhaps the most inventive musician it has ever been my privilege to hear”. This CD retrospective of his dazzling, if brief ( he was killed in a car crash at age 25), career should help him gain his rightful place among the great jazz masters. 26 tracks, recorded during the four short years of his fame are the very essence of ‘Chicago-style’ jazz.

2 CD set focusing on the first decade of Louis Armstrong’s recording career, including tracks with the King Oliver Creole Jazz band, selected recordings with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra and Clarence Williams Blue Five and landmark sessions with his Hot Five and Hot Seven which became a key element of the entire jazz canon.

50 track 2 CD collection from one of the most important figures in the early years of jazz –a trumpet and cornet player who influenced a host of contemporaries and later performers. Beiderbecke’s life was short but he recorded a substantial body of work and this selection, which ends with his final session with Hoagy Carmichael in 1930, includes many top names of the era such as the Dorsey Brothers, Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti, Benny Goodman, Pee Wee Russell and Gene Krupa.

Eddie Condon was a guitarist, banjo player and bandleader in the ‘Chicago school’ of early jazz who successfully negotiated the musical vagaries of swing, big band and bebop until he was able to ride the wave of the Dixieland revival during the 1950s. This 2 CD collection encompasses a fascinating range of styles and repertoire.

This collection is devoted to the noted ‘hot jazz’ trumpeter of the swing and early bebop eras. It is an entertaining journey through a dynamic and exciting period of jazz jazz featuring Eldridge with such notables as Artie Shaw, Fletcher Henderson, Billie Holliday, Gene Krupa as well as his own bands.

Mezz Mezzrow was a jazz clarinettist and saxophonist, bandleader and entrepreneur, primarily associated with New Orleans and Dixieland jazz. This substantial 45-track collection draws from a significant proportion of the recording sessions in which he participated in the quarter century and more which it covers, selecting material which highlights his distinctive style as an ensemble player, soloist and leader.

A historic concert which represented a glorious celebration of old-time jazz. Recorded at New York’s famed venue Town Hall in 1946, this album features two bands’ worth of fabulous jazz musicians, including Sidney Bechet, Baby Dodds, Miff Mole, Wild Bill Davison, Pee Wee Russell & Muggsy Spanier, who mixed themselves together on the night as the mood directed.

Rare live performances from some of the great men of New Orleans Jazz – Sidney Bechet, Bunk Johnson, Kid Ory, Jelly Roll Morton and The Original Dixieland Jazz Band. Recordings date from 1940-1948.

This 2-CD set offers 44 tracks, including Humph’s early recordings issued on 78s by Parlophone, and all but one of the numbers from the 1954 album recorded live at the Conway Hall. Most were drawn from the existing jazz repertoire, including some quite obscure items, such as Elephant Stomp Blues. Others had their roots within the band, with allusions to clarinettist Wally Fawkes, trombonist John Picard, and saxophonist Bruce Turner. Humph’s strong lead dominates the proceedings in these classic recordings.

Cornettist Ernest Loring ‘Red’ Nichols (1905-1965) was both a magnificent player and a unique catalyst under whose leadership the celebrated Five Pennies created some of the finest ‘white jazz’ of all time. Disc One collects together 26 glorious originals from Red Nichols’ vintage years of 1926-1930. Disc Two presents the very best of a string of fine LPs issued 1956/61. This is exhilarating jazz that has not previously appeared on CD.

America made Wall Street the world’s money mart, Hollywood the factory of the world’s day dreams, and Tin Pan Alley the maker of the music it danced to…the America of the 1920s that passed into the file of the world’s memory is not an America of throbbing steel production … but a kind of mass idiocy and frivolity. Europe, drained of life and invention after the war, first jeered and then eagerly copied these hectic fads – cocktails, bobbed hair, the Charleston! A generous 26 tracks in total.

Celebrating the centenary of the great British jazz trombonist Disc 1 (1937-1944) presents George from his first studio session with Gerry Moore in 1937, through his notable early dates with such as Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Fats Waller, and Danny Polo’s Swing Stars, plus his 1938 Jive 5 & 1944 Jive 8 recordings & some from the years he spent with The Squadronaires. Disc 2 (1947-1962) shows how his style shifted in the 50s towards mainstream jazz, but he never forsook ‘Trad’, as this disc also demonstrates.

This CD continues the broadcasts of Sidney Bechet’s New Orleans Rhythm Kings from the Savoy Cafe in Boston in the spring of 1945. Bocage, like Bechet, believed that great jazz could be made from any tune and consequently the choice of music is quite unusual - interesting music played by experienced musicians in the New Orleans style. It was lucky that a few enthusiasts thought to record it ‘off air’ on acetates so that you can all enjoy it again.

This was the first time The Easy Riders got together in 31 years, and the CD really swings! It includes the last three tracks of Mouldy Dick McCarthy who died shortly after this session from April 1998. Led by Big Bill Bissonnette with Fred Vigorito, Sammy Rimington and Paul Boehmke, Bill Sinclair & Emil Mark, Arnie Hyman, Mouldy Dick McCarthy & John Russell.

What you have here is two of the most creative personalities in jazz history - Bunk Johnson and Sidney Bechet - playing many seldom heard songs with a rhythm section that knows it all in the shape of Ray Parker, George Thompson and Pops Foster. These rare recordings are of high historical interest for any jazz fan!.

This is take no prisoners jazz - a tropical storm put to music! Recorded in 1999, this CD features Sammy Rimington’s clarinet with Bill Sinclair on piano, Emil Marks banjo, Colin Bray string bass and Big Bill Bissonnette on drums.

Big Bill wrote in the notes that it is essential to “water the roots” of New Orleans jazz to keep the flame burning. This CD was recorded in 1955 and the personnel were jazz perfection as Sammy and Big Bill were joined by Eric Webster, Ken Matthews and Colin Bowden, with special guest Sarah Bissonnette. There are some great tunes here which are rarely heard in the New Orleans style!

The Lewis band in its heyday during the 50s featuring Big Jim Robinson, Alcide ‘Slow Drag’ Pavageau, Alton Purnell, Punch Miller and Paul Barbarin. Three separate sessions here from 1950, 1951 and 1958. Is doesn’t get any better than this!

This 19 track CD features three exceptionally rare sessions by Louis Armstrong. It’s nice to hear music from the great man that you won’t have heard before, as these sides have not been released commercially until now. Featured artists include Jack Teagarden, Fats Waller and Edmond Hall.

A career retrospective of the great jazz drummer - Zutty Singleton. The CD features Zutty with many of the great men of jazz, including Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Charlie LeVere, Pee Wee Russell, Sidney Bechet & Roy Eldridge.Volume 2 is on JCCD3115 @ £12.99 OR JCCD7007 Special Price for both CDs £22.00

Nine tracks from Tuba Fats’ Chosen Few Brass Band recorded in New Orleans in November 1985 plus four tracks of Tuba Fats’ Jazzmen recorded in April 2002 in New Orleans. This is marching band music that brings everyone out onto the street.

The first volume of this popular series, is from the Dr. Jazz Radio Series and records the band at its very best. New York loved them! Personnel are Wilbur de Paris, Sidney de Paris, Omer Simeon, Eddie Gibbs, Don Kirkpatrick, Freddie Moore and Zutty Singleton/ George Foster.Volume 2 JCCD3061 Volume 3 JCCD3068 @ £12.99 eachOR JCCD7008 All three CDs £35

Jazz Crusade’s founder Bill Bissonnette wanted to make a recording with his favourite British jazz musicians - and this is it! The band had not played together before and they were recorded in Church Alley - hence the name! The line-up is simply stunning - Norman Thatcher, Geoff Cole, Brian Carrick, Tony Pyke, Malcolm Hogarth, Malcolm Hurrell, Annie Hawkins & Dion Cochrane.

Recorded in the 100 Club in 1984, Ken Colyer and Johnny Parker are joined by Graham Stewart, Alan Cooper, Jim Bray and Dave Evans with special guest appearances by Diz Disley and Wally Fawkes. A good time was had by all, wallowing in nostalgia and draught beer. All except Ken Colyer, who stuck to his gin and tonic! A great night!

This album groups some interesting New Orleans jazz from the 30s and 40s featuring early George Guesnon sides, originally recorded on Decca. They are great and original Guesnon pieces and definitely collectable. It also features a live session from the Kid Thomas Band of the early 70s, plus a host of stars pay tribute to Johnny St Cyr on his 72nd birthday!

8 tracks from Jimmy Noone’s ‘Yes Yes Club’. Then there are 3 tracks from Henry Red Allen’s All-Stars including Kid Ory and Jack Teagarden, Pee Wee Russell, Bud Freeman, Lil Armstrong and Zutty Singleton or Gene Krupa. And 8 tracks from Papa Celestin’s Band featuring Albert Walters, Joe ‘Brother Cornbread’ Thomas and Louis Barbarin on drums.

In the mid fifties many traditional jazz bands made the trek to New York City to perform at one of its most prestigious jazz venues, Child’s Paramount Restaurant. Paul Barbarin made the journey in 1954 and these tracks are the result. The second band is the fabulous Wilbur DeParis band. We have three airshots from 1958 and features Sidney DeParis and Omer Simeon in what was one of the slickest bands in the history of traditional jazz.

The first volume in a series of rare recordings from this popular American label. The first 2 tracks feature The George Lewis Ragtime Band recorded in 1952. The band features Big Jim Robinson, Alton Purnell & ‘Slow Drag’ Pavageau. The second set features Bunk Johnson. Recorded in 1946 the band includes George Lewis. The third set features the rarely recorded Richard M. Jones Jazz Wizards from 1944.

The thread that weaves through all these undiscovered gems is the fluid clarinet of Edmund Hall - a true jazz legend! The three bands featured here are Henry ‘Red’ Allen and his Orchestra recorded in December 1947, Edmund Hall and Punch Miller, also from December 1947 and WC Handy’s Orchestra from December 1939.

Capt John Handy is mainly associated with the alto sax, but he was also a fine clarinet player as these tracks will testify. The personnel here is unusual, but included Alvin Alcorn and Placide Adams. They were recorded in New Orleans in August 1965. The second session on this disc dates from the beginning of 1952 and sees Jimmy Archey playing trombone on unissued airshots from Jimmy Ryan’s.

Norman Thatcher was nothing if not versatile. While he made his reputation leading the Ken Colyer Trust New Orleans Jazz Band he is no mere Colyer clone! There is only a touch of Britain’s most successful trumpet player in his style - and that in sublime moderation. This is an unusual album for him - and indeed for Jazz Crusade - drawing more on Bix Biederbecke than any of the others!

Featured again by popular demand! This was to become Ken’s last recording – a worthy testament for a great jazz musician. The music on this CD was recorded on 28th June 1986 at the Stockholm Jazz Festival, recorded at Ken’s request as a document to his stay in Sweden. He is heard here with Sweden’s Classic Jazz Band.Colyer in Stockholm Volume 2 is on JCCD3103 1 CD £12.99

The music here is very exciting and the ‘jazzmanship’ phenomenal – a great mix of black and white musicians swinging together! Recorded for Kid Ory as part of his European Tour agreement in 1959. So welcome to Cold War Berlin just two years before the wall went up to keep East Berliners from having the sort of fun you’ll be listening to on this record! The Second Set is on JCCD3126 1 CD £12.99

This CD features some of the finest British jazzmen from three of the UK’s top bands – The Ken Colyer Trust New Orleans Jazz Band, The Jubilee Jazz Band and the Chris Blount New Orleans Jazz Band – coming together for a session at The Bull at Barnes in December 1995. It features lots of unusual tunes and a great ensemble! Dave Brennan and Malc Murphy also feature here.

Three great bands from around the world in this 1990s series of recordings of great New Orleans Jazz from around the world. Starting with The Louisiana Shakers from Australia, which produces some great home-grown bands which deserve an airing. Next up we have a Scottish band - Jake’s Melody Boys – who are equally in demand in England as their native land. And finally, from Sweden Jesse’s New Orleans Jazz Band – led by Jens ‘Jesse’ Lindgren, who is well known to British jazz fans.

A recording of a wonderful tour of Scandinavia in 1974 by Kid Sheik Cola with special guest Joseph ‘Brother Cornbread’ Thomas, a New Orleans old stager and first class clarinet! The Kid had to work hard to ensure that Cornbread did not get all the attention, and when you listen to the end result here, I think you will agree that both Kid Sheik and Brother Cornbread were seriously underrated.

Volume 1 features George Lewis at Artisan Hall from 1952, Bunk Johnson from 1946 and Billie & Dee Dee Pierce from 1967Volume 2 has tracks by Jimmy Noone’s Yes Yes Club, Red Allen’s All Stars featuring Kid Ory and Papa Celestin’s Band without Papa but with Pee Wee Russell, Albert French and Louis Barbarin.

New Orleans has a special place in the history of jazz, and Dukes of Dixieland has a special place in the story of New Orleans. As natives of this city rich in musical tradition it was inevitable that their chosen path would lead down that well-trodden road - Dukes Of Dixieland is a perfect illustration of a jazz combo which has taken the legacy they inherited as New Orleans musicians and gone on to greater things.

Rare sessions recorded in Boston in the spring of 1945 bringing together two jazz greats Bunk Johnson & Sidney Bechet with Ray Parker, George Thompson, Sidney Bechet and Pops Foster.

Volume 3 features 2 bands from the 1950s: 11 tracks of Paul Barbarin and his band in New York in 1954 plus 5 tracks from three airshots from Wilbur deParis from 1958 featuring Omer Simeon. On Volume 4 there are 7 early George Guesnon sides which are definitely collectable. Then 5 tracks from the Kid Thomas Band featuring Louis Nelson and Paul Barnes from 1974 and finally JOHNNY ST CYR 73rd BIRTHDAY GREETINGS recorded in New Orleans in 1963.

Pete Fountain’s life story has been wholly in harmony with Jazz, and here is a veritable feast of tracks from some of his LPs covering the period 1959-1962. This is music from excellent musicians playing songs that are as familiar as the seasons of the year. Alongside the well-known standards Pete touches on the French influence in New Orleans – all accompanied by an orchestra which is part Bourbon Street and part Champs Elyssées. You feel yourself being transported to a café somewhere in Paris. As this compilation attests, you can take the musicians out of Bourbon Street but you can’t take Bourbon Street out of man like Pete Fountain.

The music here is very exciting and the ‘jazzmanship’ phenomenal! A great mix of black and white musicians swinging together! Recorded for Kid Ory as part of his European Tour agreement in 1959. So welcome to Cold War Berlin at the height of tensions between East and West just two years before the wall went up to keep East Berliners from having the sort of fun you’ll be listening to on these records!

Ever popular collection of Jazz favourites in a 4 CD set. 96 Original tracks - including Kid Ory – Turk Murphy – Bunk Johnson – Bobby Hackett – Edmund Hall - Louis Armstrong - Muggsy Spanier - Red Allen – Jelly Roll Morton – Jimmy Noone – Miff Mole – Wingy Manone – Red Allen – Sidney Bechet – Jack Teagarden – Red Nichols - Louis Prima and many more.

Three great CDs in a 1990s series of recordings of first rate New Orleans Jazz from around the world. Volume 1 features bands from Sweden, Australia and Scotland. Volume 2 has bands from Japan, Canada and Belgium, while Volume 3 features bands from France, Brazil and the USA.

This unique 58-track, 2 CD collection contains all his singles, both A- and B-sides issued between 1954-1961. Features 32 UK hits, including Lonnie’s four UK No. 1s Cumberland Gap, Gamblin’ Man, Putting On The Style and My Old Man’s A Dustman.
