JACK AND THE BEANSTALKThe StoryOne of the best-known fairy tales, Jack and the Beanstalk is the story of a young boy, Jack, who lives with his widowed mother. Their only source of income is the milk from a cow but, when the cow stops producing milk, his mother tells Jack to take it to the market and sell it. On the way there, however, he meets an old man, who buys the cow in exchange for some ‘magic’ beans. When Jack returns home with beans instead of money, his mother becomes very angry. She throws the beans out the window and sends poor Jack to bed without his dinner.
As both Jack and his mother are sleeping, the beans grow into a gigantic beanstalk that soars up into the clouds. Curious, Jack climbs the beanstalk and arrives at a land high in the sky. While exploring the place, he discovers a castle that is the home of a giant. The giant’s wife lets him in and feeds him. Suddenly, the giant returns home and Jack is forced to hide. The giant, however, smells that a human is nearby and says: “Fee-fi-fo-fum! I smell the blood of an Englishman; be he alive, or be he dead, I'll grind his bones to make my bread.” Unable to find Jack, however, the giant eats his meal and starts counting his money. When he falls asleep, Jack steals a bag of money and returns home.
Although he and his mother now have enough to live on, a curious Jack decides to return to the giant’s castle. There, he learns about the giant’s other treasures and decides to steal them when the giant is sleeping. The first is a goose that lays golden eggs and the other is a harp that plays by itself. While stealing the harp, however, the giant wakes up and chases Jack down the beanstalk. When he arrives home, Jack asks his mother for an axe and chops down the beanstalk. The giant, who is climbing down the beanstalk, then falls to his death. Jack and his mother lived happily ever after with all the riches that he stole from the giant.
The MusicThe version of Jack and the Beanstalk you hear today is based on a rhyme written by Roald Dahl and published in his book, Revolting Rhymes. It is similar to the original version – there is still the boy, Jack, a cow, the beanstalk and the giant, but it is funnier and a bit shocking. The performance you see today was first staged at the Royal Albert Hall in London in December 1996. The music is written by the Latvian composer, Georgs Pelécis, while the text has been adapted by Donald Sturrock. It is performed by a cast of four actors, puppets and a 60-foot beanstalk that rises from the stage to the ceiling, all supported by dramatic music performed by the orchestra.Concert notes: Christy Yoong
