Somewhere on the JA campus there is a little red box with a surprise inside. If you find the box, bring it and its contents to Miss Brown’s room. There you will be enlightened on what your gift will be. The box is hidden only in the High School and Junior High build-ings and surrounding areas. It will not be located in any class rooms. Good Luck!

There is no doubt that the Southeastern Con-ference is the premier football conference in the na-tion because of its tradition of having the past five BCS National Champions and will have its sixth this year, with Alabama and LSU playing each other for the title in January. Expansion has been a hot top-ic throughout the last few years in college sports. Money, geography, and TV revenue have been the most important aspects of expansion. The SEC has allowed Texas A&M University and the University of Missouri to join the league. The main reason these two schools are coming to the SEC is because of the revenue they could produce. Important markets where fans and alumni live will be added and reve-nue for the conference will have a major boost. Main markets for Texas A&M are Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio and major markets for Missouri are Kansas City and St. Louis. The league has two divisions, an East division and a West division. Texas A&M will be put in the West division because of the geography and the rivalry it has with the University of Arkansas.

Texas A&M has a rich tradition in sports with a strong baseball team and a football team that has a Na-tional Championship and one Heisman Trophy Win-ner. Missouri will be located in the East division. Al-though Missouri is closer to the schools in the West, it will be located in the East to preserve current SEC rivalries. If they were put in the West, one current SEC West school would have to move to the East, but it would most likely take away that school’s rival-ries with other schools that it currently plays. Many suspect that the SEC will move to sixteen schools in the near future. It will be hard to tell who will be allowed in, but many speculate that it will be schools that are not in the realm of the SEC already be-cause adding markets would be important. It will be interesting to see how the conferences will change over the next few years and how the schools will shift. One thing is sure- college football will continue to dominate the sports world for the coming years.

Everyday I’m Studying... Helpful study techniques on how to

successfully prepare for examsby Anne Overton Waller

With Thanksgiving break behind us, it’s time to start bringing out the notecards and highlighters. The work load has doubled and the teachers are getting ready to pass out review packets...which can only mean one thing: it’s exam time. Although the idea of studying for exams can fill a person with dread, there are a few ways to lighten the burden of distractions and loss of memory that accompany the days prior to exams. Some of the best places to study are libraries, classrooms, or some place in the house that is quiet. Studies have shown that listening to classical music while studying can improve the ability to remember things. Everyone learns and studies different-ly. If one is a visual learner, the best way to study is to use drawings and graphs with the material they’re trying to learn. People that learn well by listening should read material aloud or talk it out with someone. Finally, if someone is a haptic learner (can’t sit still and/or gets easily distracted), he or she needs to make the process of studying more physi-cal by walking around the room and looking over information, or by using different col-ored highlighters to organize the material.

Academictips.org provides a studying meth-od called SQ3R:S-survey materialQ-develop questions about the main pointsR-read the chapter activelyR-recite the main pointsR-review the material often to refresh memory Finally, study breaks are important times to rest the mind. After each hour of studying, take about 15 minutes to relax or exercise. Before the exam, it is important to get a good amount of sleep and to eat properly.

The True Meaning Of Christmas

By Meg Boyles

There was a time when the celebration of Christmas was banned. In 1647, the Protestant Reformation was in full swing as a well-known Puritan leader named Oliver Cromwell began to label Christmas as a Catholic invention and the “trap-pings of popery.” In addition, he felt that Christmas feasts and parties were exceedingly immoral. With the help of the Eng-lish Parliament, Oliver Cromwell deemed Christmas illegal.Riots broke out. Pro-Christmas protesters decorated their doorways with holly and shouted Christmas jingles at po-lice officers. Many priests continued to give a Christmas mass; this time in secret. Nothing would stop them from celebrating the holy day. Though Parliament had taken away their carols, Christmas Trees, Nativity Scenes, and yes, even the word “Christmas” in the mid-seventeenth

century, many brave Christians risked their lives to steal them back. The ban was lifted in 1660 to the joy of many. One thing seems apparent. The protesters must have un-derstood the true meaning of Christmas. Indeed, not only did they understand it, but also they grasped the power of the very events that Oliver Cromwell had not. He believed the celebrations were useless. They under-stood that the celebrations brought people together, in-spired unity, renewed faith, and rejoiced in the Lord. The best part of this story is the protesters fierce hold on what they knew was right. That begs the question, what is the true meaning of Christmas? And if someone threatened to take it away, how important would it be to get it back?

Going Green For ChristmasBy Meg Boyles

As the new year is ushered in, many will take the time to reflect on their behavior and how it affects others. What can be changed that will help the environment? It may be surprising to know that the following steps are small but have large impacts.• Unsubscribe to mailing lists to save paper.• While writing Christmas lists, check out solar-

powered chargers for your laptop, phone, tv, etc. They’re inexpensive and beneficial to the environ-ment. For solar-powered gadgets, check out soldius.com.

• Carpool to work and school, drive slower, and keep car tires inflated.

• Practice the Three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Re-cycle. Reuse everything, especially plastic bags.

• Instead of wastefully throwing away every plastic water bottle, bring a reusable bottle to school. It will save money and the environment.

• Instead of buying movies, rent them. Monstrous amounts of DVDs are thrown out every month. In ad-dition, it will save up to twelve dollars.

• When leaving a room, turn off the lights and elec-tronics. They will continue to suck energy even when they are not being used.

• Use rechargeable batteries. Americans throw out close to 179,000 tons of batteries every year. Bat-teries exude toxic chemicals into the air once they are thrown out. One rechargeable battery can be recharged one thousand times.

• Remove unnecessary files to speed up your com-puter. This will help save energy.

Russia

During the era of communism in Russia, religious celebrations were prohibited by the government. Many Russians didn’t celebrate Christmas for fear of their lives. Instead, many faithful citizens covered up their Christmas celebration by celebrating on New Years. Now, Christmas is celebrated on January 7, the date that the Russian Orthodox Church uses from the old “Julian” calendar. However, New Years is still as important of a celebration. On New Years Eve, the family comes together to await a night full of celebra-tion. Dishes such as Borsh (beetroot or vegetable soup), solyanka (vegan potluck), salad olivier (winter salad), various pickled vegetables, and piroshki (empanadas). Then, the children gather around the New Year’s tree hand in hand, waiting for Ded Moroz, or Frozen Grandpa. Ded Moroz is the equivalent of St. Nicholas, but wears a long blue robe and carries a big magic staff and a bag full of toys. Usually his grand-daughter, Snegurochka, accompanies him. Toward the end of the night everyone enjoys New Year’s con-certs and countdown to the New Year. On Christmas Day, the family enjoys the same type of meal as they did on New Years with an additional drink called Vzvar, made from dried fruit and honey boiled water, in honor of the birth of Christ. Instead of opening presents, everyone goes to the midnight church services after their meal and does not come home until four in the morning.

Christmas Around The WorldBy Dasha Tsema

France

Christmas is celebrated differently throughout the different regions of France. The most com-mon Christmas is celebrated on December 25, which is a blank holiday. Some regions celebrate la Fête de Saint Nicolas on December 6, la Fête de Lumières on December 8, and a Fête des Rois on the Sunday after January 1st. As tradition, children leave their shoes in front of the fireplace for Papa Noel to leave gifts in. Instead of coal, children would receive spankings by Père Fouettard if they had been bad that year. On Christmas Eve, families would attend le Réveillon, a huge feast with goose, chicken, capon, tur-key stuffed with chestnuts, oysters, and boudin blanc (similar to white pudding). The feast, which can be enjoyed anywhere in France, symbolizes the awakening to the meaning of Christ’s birth.
