Solemnity of Saint Benedict

St. Benedict Cathedral | Evansville, IN 2

We welcome into our faith community

Ellie Reese Schultheis Daughter of Joseph & Sarah (Iverson)

Schultheis who was baptized on Sunday, July 4, 2021

at St. Ben’s.

From Fr. Godfrey — HAPPY FEAST DAY. Today (July 11) is the Solemnity of Saint Benedict here at the Cathedral (in non-Benedictine places, it’s just the 15th Sunday of Ordinary Time!). I hope and pray that this day will give you the time and grace to find the peace that St. Benedict envi-sioned for his followers. Some-

times, it would seem that we pursue so many other things besides peace. And so seldom do those things bring us peace. Christ is our peace. Let’s be more faithful at seeking Him. He gives peace the world cannot give. St. Benedict, pray for us! — THANK YOU to Fr. Bill Traylor for covering for me while I spend this week with my family. May God reward your faithful service. — COMPASSION. One of the clearest ways of showing genuine compassion to another is by giving them the benefit of the doubt. If we find ourselves being pessimis-tic, creating or spreading gossip, or in a regular state of alarm, worry, or suspicion, maybe we ought to ask ourselves, if it’s within our control, how faith in God factors into all that. His grace can bring calm! — STEWARDSHIP CARDS for SCHOOL FAMI-LIES. A reminder that we have had in place for five years now a policy that requires a completed Stewardship Commitment Card on file for a family to receive the “active parishioner tuition discount” at St. Benedict Cathedral School and Reitz Memorial High School. You may fill it out, if you wish, online — www.saintbenedictcathedral.org > About Us > Stewardship Renewal Card - Online. I, too, am called to be a good steward of the parish’s resources. — LET’S PRAY for Pope Francis’ complete recovery from colon surgery last Sunday.

There are many times when we offer assistance to a neighbor and we never hear about how they are doing later or know how much it helps down the road. Then, there was last week. We received a call from a client who we had helped in the past. “Jessica” is a single mom with four kids ages 4 to 12. She had asked us for help a few years ago when her youngest needed to go to Riley’s Hospital for health reasons after having compli-cations at birth and requiring a feeding tube. Jessica had used up her family leave time at work and had gone through her retirement money to keep up. She was in a

time of need, and we were able to help. Thanks to your generous donations, we helped her cover her mortgage payments and keep her from foreclosure on her house. We had also helped keep her water from being shut off when things got tight. She called last week, and asked for one thing. A clothing voucher. That was all she needed. She has a new job in health care and is able to work more now. She and the kids are doing well and still in their house. Through the tough times, St. Vin-cent de Paul helped her stay on her feet and we’re so grateful that we could.

Parish Pastoral Council Elections were postponed from last August because of Covid. Now, the nomi-nation process is scheduled for the weekends of July 31-August 1 and August 7-8. Elections for the next three-year term will take place at the Sun-day Masses the weekend of August 28-29. The purpose of the Parish Pastoral Council is to investigate pastoral matters, to consider them thoroughly, and to propose practical conclusions about them. The topic of concern for the next three years is STEWARDSHIP. The 2014 Council consid-ered Hospitality and the 2017 Council worked on Communication. The past year, we've focused on Stewardship. Eight members are elected and four are appointed by the rector. To be eligible for election, one must have been baptized, confirmed, and received First Holy Communion, and be a registered parishioner.

Help Wanted The Catholic Center and Sarto Retreat House Part-time After-Hours Employee Position The Diocese of Evansville Activities Office is looking for part-time After-hours Employee staff to assist with meetings and retreats. We are looking for a responsible individual who is willing to work a flexible schedule of primarily evenings and weekends, including some overnight shifts. Dear St. Benedict Cathedral members, Thank you so much for your very gener-ous donation of food, personal hygiene and cleaning items most needed at the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pan-try. There were over 50 filled blue bags delivered to our pantry on June 18—two vehicle loads!! Needless to say, we were delighted to receive those donations. Our vol-unteers went right to work—sorting and shelving it– and starting to give it out! You are certainly helping us give a 4-day supply of groceries (including fresh milk, eggs, meat, fresh fruits, vegetables, & potatoes) along with cereal, canned and dry goods, personal hygiene & cleaning items to those facing hard times. Frederic Oza-nam, the founder of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, urged us to “embrace the world in a network of chari-ty.” Thank you for being a part of that network. God’s blessings on all the good work you do for our communi-ty. Gratefully, Sr. Donna Marie Herr, OSB, Manager, SVdP Food Pantry.
