Initiative/Leadership

UBC Rowing Athlete

UBC Rowing takes in novices each September to train. As a new rower, I had decided to get highly involved with recruiting, and decided to try and break the normal culture of disconnection between novices and varsity athletes

Find a way to involve myself with recruitment to a higher degree than normal and create a connection with those trying-out for the team so they could feel comfortable asking me questions

After attending all recruitment activities, decided to take part in the tryouts with the potential athletes, both to connect with them and to push them to try and take on a UBC rower. This involved four 2km races over 2 days, back to back with the groups

I stuck with the lead runner of each group, and even though none beat me, I had a noticeable crowd of novices around me after the runs, clearly more comfortable with asking me questions about my novice experience

Leading from the sidelines creates a culture of disconnect and isn’t a good way to lead

What is the storyteller missing from their

story? Is it specific enough? What questions do you have? What is confusing? Is the skill relevant? Are there step-by-step actions? Is the story appropriate for an interview? Do they have an obstacles as a task?
