DR. ROY SPURGEON WYNN, son of the late Julia White and Alfred Wynn, was born on September 25, 1900 and passed away at Huntersville Oaks Nursing Home on August 28, 1989.

A native of Bertie County, Dr. Wynn was an opthalmologist. He attended Howard University where he earned the B.S. degree in 1929 and the M.D. degree in 1933.

Dr. Wynn began his practice in Warrenton, North Carolina, where he met and married Maria Ellis in 1938. The Wynns celebrated their fiftieth Wedding Anniversary on June 1, 1988.

An active participant in professional and civic affairs, he was a past president of the Charlotte Medical Society and the Old North State Medical Society. Other professional affiliations included the North Carolina Medical Society, The National Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Opthalmology. He was appointed by Governor Sanford to the Medical Advisory Council of the State Board of Mental Health.

Dr. Wynn was the first black commissioner of the Charlotte Housing Authority and an activel member of the Mecklenburg County Boy Scout Council. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Beta Delta Chapter of the Sigma Pi Phi Boule', First Baptist Church-West and past president of the local NAACP.

Highly respected by his professional peers and the larger community, Dr. Wynn was the recipient of many prestigious awards. Among them are the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America; the Doctor of the Year Award from the old North State Medical Society; The Omega Man of the Year Award and the Scroll of Honor from Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, a citation for Distinguished Service from the Charlotte Housing Authority and the Charlotte Business League's Hall of Fame.

Dr. Wynn was a devoted husband and father. His family was his pride and joy. He was an exemplary citizen -- a role model of integrity, hard work and dedication.

Surviving him in loving memory are his wife, Maria; sons, Roy, Jr., and Ossian; daughter, Patricia; grandsons, Royce, Cameron and Trevor; granddaughters, Candis and Michelle; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

"He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who has left the world better than he found it; who has never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; who has always looked for the best in others; and given the best he had; whose life has been an inspiration; whose memory is a benediction."
