You will have a whole day to discover some of the lesser known treasures and the emblematic sites of a city that never ceases to

amaze with its priceless artistic heritage. Your tour will begin on board the Roma Express, a recently inaugurated train exclusively for

cruise passengers, which will take you to the Eternal City in great style, avoiding the chaotic traffic of the Italian capital. You will be

met by your guide upon arrival at San Pietro Station and will board a coach to take you to the Colosseum. Here you will explore one

of Rome's most evocative churches: the Basilica of San Clemente. This church is built on three levels and provides a cross-section of

the age-old history of the city. Indeed, the first basilica was built on top of pre-existing Roman buildings in the fourth century, then

destroyed by the Normans and rebuilt in 1108. Your tour will continue with a visit to the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli on the

Oppian Hill. It was built in the fifth century by Eudoxia, the wife of the emperor Valentinian III, with the purpose of housing the chains

that bound Saint Peter during his imprisonment in Jerusalem. Inside you will also be able to admire Michelangelo's magnificent

sculpture, universally known as Moses. A short stroll will take you to two symbols of the city: the Colosseum, the famous arena of the

gladiators, and the Roman Forum, once the political and commercial centre of Rome. Following a lunch of local specialities, your tour

will continue with a visit to Saint Peter's Square and its basilica, which artists such as Bramante, Michelangelo, Raphael and Bernini

have made one of the most visited architectural masterpieces in the world.

Please note: the journey to Rome takes approximately 1 hour and the guide will meet you in Rome. Please wear appropriate

clothing (no shorts or tank tops) during the visit to holy places. Space is limited, so please reserve early. This excursion is only

available to guests that do not end their cruise in Civitavecchia.

    INFORMATIONS

From the port of Civitavecchia you will head to Rome via the motorway to meet your guide. First you'll visit the Colosseum, the great

amphitheatre accommodating up to 80,000 visitors and the eternal symbol of Roman civilisation. In the surrounding area, you'll

admire the imposing Arch of Constantine, the last of the triumphal monuments of the classical age, erected in 315 AD to celebrate

Constantine's victory over Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge. From here you have the opportunity to enjoy an overview of the Forum

and admire the majestic columns and ruins from a distance, immersing yourself in the political, religious and public life of ancient

Rome. You will also see the imposing Capitol, the smallest but most famous of Rome's seven hills and the location of the Senatorial

Palace, headquarters of the Municipality of Rome. After lunch, you'll continue your visit with a tour of Saint Peter's Basilica, built

over the tomb of the saint of the same name in the 2nd century and made a Basilica during the imperial rule of Constantine. Here

you'll admire the richly decorated Basilica and see the altar where the Pope celebrates Mass. Don't miss the opportunity for a

souvenir photograph in front of the Basilica.

The first destination on the excursion will be La Sagrada Familia, icon and symbol of the city of Barcelona and a landmark for visitors

from all over the world, often considered to be one of the most extraordinary monuments ever constructed by man. It is an imposing

neo-Gothic church, designed using the great medieval cathedrals as models of reference, and constructed in a modernist style (the

Catalan version of Art Nouveau). The project and its realisation was entrusted to renowned architect Antoni Gaud (just over thirty

years of age at the time), who worked on it for the rest of his life. Having begun in 1882, work still continues today following the

plans laid down by its designer: the fact that you'll be able to watch one of the masterpieces of world architecture being constructed

before your very eyes will make your visit even more fascinating. Your guide will show you the two completed facades (the Nativity

and the Passion facades) and will then lead you inside the church where expert craftsmen continue to work on a masterpiece in

constant evolution. Next it's on to Park Guell, another of genius Gaudi's incomplete works: conceived at the beginning of the 1900'sas a futuristic residential district, at the time the project failed to achieve the success that had been hoped for and work was

interrupted. Yet Gaudi had fortunately already begun work on an inimitable project, with its wide winding pathways, benches and

sculptures with multicoloured mosaics in pure modernist style. Your visit will conclude with a trip to Casa Mila, better known as "La

Pedrera" ("the quarry"): this building undeniably represents Gaudi's most mature work and is distinctive for its myriad of revolutionary

and visionary details, true testament to his extraordinary creativity.

Please note: Space is limited, so please reserve early.

    INFORMATIONS

Barcelona's historical and cultural traditions, its monuments and mild climate make it one of the liveliest and most attractive cities in

Spain. The tour first climbs Montjuic Hill, featuring lush gardens and beautiful views of the city. Crossing the town centre and drivingalong the main roads, you will head for the northern part of the city. There, in addition to the Avenida de la Diagonal, is the

impressive cathedral of the Sagrada Familia (outside visit only), a monumental church in the neo-Gothic style begun in 1882

according to Antonio Gaudi's plans and still under construction today. You will then continue to the Barrio Gotico (Gothic Quarter)

which boasts the Cathedral, a masterpiece of Catalan Gothic architecture. To conclude, we'll visit Parque Gell, designed by Gaudi.

This is not only a park but was to be a housing complex with which the Catalonian architect intended to inspire a new style of town

    planning.

Please note: In the event of religious celebrations the visit of the cathedral will be an external view only.

This trip will take you to the highly original Guell Park. Gaud initially envisaged this area as a large English-style park, but successively

its creation was largely entrusted to one of his disciples, Josep Maria Jujol. Its undulating benches covered in ceramic fragments of

many shapes and colours are fascinating objects, whose numerous details and shades will certainly catch your eye. You will have

time to stroll along the paths of this marvellous park, before boarding your coach for the short trip to "Eixample" district, where the

famous "Sagrada Familia" (outside visit only) cathedral is situated. A local guide will give you a detailed commentary of the details of

the faade. Finally, you will have some free time, as many of you will certainly be tempted to do some shopping. Your next stop will

be Casa Mila, better known as "La Pedrera" (The Stone Quarry), which certainly represents Gaud's most mature work. No other

building could better represent Modernism. This was the last residential building to be designed by Gaud and was built between

1906 and 1912. It is characterised by a myriad of revolutionary details, which testify to the artist's creativity and extraordinary

technical mastery. The next masterpiece on your itinerary is Casa Batllo, a residential building that exudes dreamlike atmosphere. You will be able to admire its faade, which is completely covered in a multicoloured mosaic of shiny scales. The same technique has

been used for the roof. The suggestive faade recalls the legend of Saint George and his fight with the dragon: according to this

reading, the cross can be interpreted as the tail of the dragon and the row of balconies as the bones of its victims. On your way back

to the ship you will cross the commercial heart of the old city and of Barcelona itself - the famous Plaza de Catalunya - and the

    harbour area.

Please note: Space is limited, so please book early.

We will start to explore the beautiful city of Barcelona with a panoramic drive: the Avenue de la Diagonal, the Paseo de Gracia

(including famous works by Gaudi, the Spanish artist renowned throughout the world), the spectacular Sagrada Familia, a

magnificent work which is the only one of its kind in the world and finally the City's stadium (the famous "Nou Camp"). After a 1 hour

journey we will reach Montserrat where the Virgin Mary appeared in the year 880 for a visit to the Monastery and the Basilica

(home to the Madonna of Montserrat) built in the 16th century. This extremely beautiful Romanesque wooden sculpture of the

Patron Saint of Catalonia dates back to the 12th century and is known as "la Morenta" because of the dark facial colour. As we

make our way to "Cavas Vilarnau", situated in the small village of Sant Sadurni, famous for its rich "Cave" or rather the wine cellars

that produce wine, sparkling wine and Spanish champagne. Inside this recently constructed wine cellar, we will understand the

production process and also have the chance to sample the flavour. At the end of the visit we will drive back to the port .

Please note: You will have free time for lunch in the vicinity of the Basilica of Montserrat. Space is limited, so please reserve early.

    INFORMATIONS

From the port of Barcelona a coach will take you to Montserrat. Travelling northwest through the picturesque Spanish countryside,

you will enjoy a spectacular view of the Montserrat Mountain Ridge. Although exceptionally small (only six miles long, three miles

wide and 4280 feet high) the barren tops of these unique mountains look like smooth, vertical fingers reaching up into the sky. On a

natural platform at 725 metres above the sea level, you will admire and visit the Montserrat Monastery, a Benedictine Abbey

founded in the 11th century. The tour includes a visit to the Basilica built in the 16th century.

Guests are advised to wear suitable clothing for entrance into holy places.

Visit Aix en Provence, a university and spa town, cultural and political centre of Provence, just a half hour's drive from the port of

Marseilles. Take a walk through Aix's romantic streets and their stately 17th and 18th century mansions, and discover its

sophisticated atmosphere. Your guided walking tour through the city will start in the heart of town at Cours Mirabeau, an idyllic, tree-

lined boulevard with beautiful fountains and many outdoor cafs. You will also visit The Mazarin Quarter, designed by the

Archbishop Michel Mazarin, brother of the famous Cardinal. Laid out in 1646, its rectangular design is characteristic of 17th

century town planning. Here you will visit the "Place des Quatre Dauphins" (Four Dolphins Square) with its lovely fountain adorned

with sculptures of four dolphins, and the "Saint Sauveur Cathedral" where architectural styles from the 5th to the 17th centuries can

be seen side by side. After the walking visit you will have some leisure time to enjoy the little produce market or relax at a local

    caf.

    INFORMATIONS

This tour will take you to Avignon - "the City of the Popes"- and to the spectacular village of Les Baux. Driven from Rome by

rebellion, Pope Clement V established his court in Avignon in 1309, and it remained the papal headquarters until 1403. Take a

walking tour of the interior of the Palace of the Popes, a massive fortress-like structure that gives the appearance of a citadel built

out of living rocks. Relax at a local cafe on the "Place de l'Horloge", enjoy some shopping in the pedestrian streets of the city and see

the famous "St.Benezet Bridge" immortalised in a children's song. At Les Baux, the remains of the 11th Century citadel built on a

rocky plateau will amaze you: it is hard to distinguish which part is rock and which is man made. You will have some free time to

explore the village or to browse through the many provincial shops.

at the old port. Once used by the Greeks, this deep cove penetrates the urban fabric of the city and is now used for fishermen and

tourist vessels. We will walk from the port and then stop to admire the Fort of St John and the Romanesque Church of St Laurent,

    INFORMATIONS

Once you have left the port of Marseilles you will arrive to Avignon after approx. 1 hour. Six hundred years ago Avignon had a period

of prosperity thanks to the Pope who moved here with his court. Seven Popes were here one after another from 1309 to 1403.

You will visit the Pope's Palace, which is a palace but also a fortress full of galleries, rooms and chapels that nowadays are empty

and give an image of austerity. Nevertheless the hand made carpets may suggest the vanity of that time. There will be free time for
