In this issue: call for session proposals and call for abstracts of the 8th Intercontinental Landfill Research Symposium ICLRS 2014, announcement of the 4th International Conference on Industrial and Hazardous Waste Management CRETE 2012 and updates on future IWWG activities. Announcement of the 8th Intercontinental Landfill Research Symposium – ICLRS 2014 The 8th Intercontinental Landfill Research Symposium has been scheduled for October 19–22, 2014 at the Plantation on Crystal Riv- er, Florida. The ICLRS is an official IWWG event which aims at assembling world’s leading researchers and practitioners, address- ing a broad range of topics related to landfills and discussing the current knowledge and future directions of landfilling. The conference is held every two years and rotates between Ja- pan, Sweden and the United States of America. This edition’s Con- ference Board includes: Dr. Debra Reinhart, University of Central Florida (USA), Dr. Anders Lagerkvist, Luleå University of Technology (Sweden), and Dr. Toshihiko Matsuto, Hokkaido University (Japan). The seventh edition of the conference, held in Sweden in 2012, was attended by almost 70 researchers from 16 different countries. In contrast with other meetings, the emphasis of the ICLRS is on critical discussion and detailed exploration of a topic. To this end, the ICLRS is unique in its program format: sessions are typically two hours workshops which include 4–5 presentations. Each ses- sion is designed so that formal presentations are kept to a mini- mum and at least 50% of the time is spent on discussion. Moreover, session themes are proposed by volunteers who identify research questions and recruit abstracts and participants. Call for session proposals The conference board of the Symposium invites researchers from all over the world to propose session ideas, which will be developed in co-operation with the Organizing Committee. A session chair is not just chairing the session at the ICLRS, but leading the creative work of developing a session that forms a structured discussion with defined issues and outputs. Session pro- posers should provide a paragraph on the topic background and list session objectives, subjects to be addressed, and potential present- ers. Submission should be by electronic mail as a Word file. All ses- sion proposals should be sent to: [email protected]. Session organizers should actively solicit presenters and instruct them to submit their abstracts by March 15th, 2014. Session organizers will also be able to include presenters who have independently submit- ted abstracts. Example sessions from past ICLRS include the follow- ing: hydrodynamics of landfills, mistakes in landfill research and practice, landfill mining, landfill covers – materials and design, landfill aeration, even gas distribution in methane oxidation sys- tems, anaerobic decomposition of forest products in landfills, methane oxidation systems, modeling landfill gas generation, the use of stable isotopes for quantification of methane oxidation in landfill, disaster waste, the fate of emerging compounds in land- fills, landfill aftercare completion, landfill stabilization and sustain- able landfill. Symposium organizers are open to all relevant topics. Call for abstracts Submission of abstracts should be by electronic mail as a Word file sent to [email protected] no later than March 14th, 2014. Authors will be notified of acceptance by April 30th, 2014. Additional information on the ICLRS can be found at the conference website: http://iclrs2014.com/html. EurAsia Waste Manage-ment Symposium will provide a comprehensive overview of effec-tive waste management strategies across the Asian and theEuropean regions. The symposium will provide the opportunity todiscuss and evaluate current and future regional waste manage-ment strategies and recycling projects. All parties of waste manage-ment such as universities, industrial organizations, publicinstitutions and organizations, local governments and legislatorsare welcome to attend the conference in order to share their expe-riences and bring a common body of knowledge for the solution ofwaste management problems in the region.

Themes to be thoroughly discussed include:

Biological Methods for Waste Disposal. Construction and Demolition Waste Management. Electronic Waste (Weee) Management. Hazardous Waste Management. Hospital Waste Management. Industrial Waste Management. Landfill Gas Management. Landfilling. Leachate Management and Treatment. Nanowaste Management. Rehabilitation of the Dumping Sites. Sludge Treatment and Disposal. Solid Waste Collection and Transport. Thermal Technologies for Waste Disposal. Waste From End of Life Vehicles (ELV). Waste Management Legislations. Waste To Energy.

Fifth International Symposium on Energy from Biomassand Waste – VENICE 2014

The fifth International Symposium on Energy from Biomass andWaste VENICE 2014 will take place in Venice, Italy, November 12–15, 2014. The conference is an official IWWG event organised bythe IWWG with the scientific support of the University of Queens-land (Brisbane, Australia), the University of Padua (Italy), the Uni-versity of Hokkaido (Japan), the University of Rostock (Germany)and the Hamburg University of Technology (Germany).

The production of energy from alternative sources and itsimpact on climate change are among the main strategic toolsimplicated in the sustainable development of our society.

2818 IWWG News & Viewpoint / Waste Management 33 (2013) 2816–2818

Numerous types of biomass and wastes contribute towards theproduction of energy and reduction in the use of fossil fuels bymeans of biological, chemical and thermal processes. Existing bio-mass and waste to energy technologies are currently undergoingrapid development. Despite growing interest in the use of thesetechnologies, in many countries their implementation remainslimited. The aim of the Venice 2014 Symposium is to focus onthe advances made in the application of technologies for energyrecovery from biomass and waste and to encourage discussion inthese fields. The previous edition of the conference, held in 2012,was attended by approximately 560 participants (researchers, technicians, administrators and operators) from 56 different na-tions with the presentation of 359 scientific papers. It also consti-tuted a chance for some of the IWWG Task Groups to organise theirinternal meetings.

As per a consolidated tradition, the Symposium will last fourdays and will include oral sessions, workshops, a poster sessionand a small exhibition by companies working in the field. Guidedtechnical tours of real scale plants operating in the production ofenergy from biomass and waste both by means of thermal and bio-logical processes will be arranged by the Organizers at the end ofthe conference week.

Themes to be thoroughly discussed include:

Biomass and waste characterisation as a potential energysource.

Renewable fuel (biodiesel, bioethanol, gas liquification, hydrogen).

Anaerobic digestion. Refuse-derived fuel (RDF). Thermal treatment (combustion, pyrolysis, gasification

and others). Economic aspects. Decision tools. Policies and Legal aspects. Climate change and Sink. Ecotoxicological aspects and Health issues. Public acceptance. Experiences and new developments. Developing countries.

The official language of the Symposium is English, therefore allpapers must be presented and written in proper English. Authorswill be expected to attend the conference and present their papersthemselves. In addition, a session to be held entirely in Italian willbe held, in order to facilitate the participation of local delegates.Italian authors may freely submit papers for inclusion in both Eng-lish and Italian sessions (in the English and Italian languages, respectively).

An extended abstract, prepared using the template availablefor download through the official Symposium website(www.venicesymposium.it) should be submitted online to theOrganization no later than February 28th, 2014. Abstracts mustclearly describe the content of the presentation and its basis (de-tailed case study, discussion of experience from practice, preli-minary research data, completed research not presentedpreviously, review of literature, administrative initiatives andregulations, etc).

Presentations will be selected following evaluation by an inter-national panel of referees. Acceptance of abstracts will be notifiedto the authors no later than March 31st, 2014.

All papers accepted for presentation at the Symposium will bepublished in Proceedings available at the start of the Symposium.

For further enquiries and information on abstract submissionand registration, accommodation, etc., please contact the OrganisingSecretariat (e-mail: [email protected]; [email protected]) or visit the website www.venicesymposium.it.
