He will soon share several secretly developed innovations

By Lynn FordC huck Ceccarelli would rather

talk about his towing inven-

tions than his upbringing but

in many ways the two are inseparable.

For instance, how did a boy who left

home at 14 wind up selling custom

wreckers and owning a state-of-the-

art design and manufacturing compa-

ny of towing products, a place where

anyone can yell Whiffleball! at any

time and everyone takes two at-bats

in the parking lot?

And how did that boy go from rid-

ing rodeo to inventing the Sidepuller,

an add-on accessory that turns a car-

rier into a recovery unit, has saved

lives, and enhanced the towing capa-

bilities of towers across the country.

Miller Industries recently licensed the

Sidepuller for production, further

ensuring widespread distribution and

success. According to Ceccarelli, one thing

just led to another. He followed his

nose, pursued his passions, straight-

ened out his values, and wound up

just about as happy as anyone has a

right to be. But that would be about him

.

Whats more important, he says, are

the people who intervened in his life,

who took the time to help him out

and point him in the right direction. I

know this story is about me, but I

have to give credit to all the people

who have helped me, including my

employees, my wife Laurie, my sons

Ben and Alex, and Donnie Cruse,

Ceccarelli said. Without them, I dont

think I would be here. Im sure of it.

Theres also a rancher named Asa

Black, but more about him later.

Theres a saying in our shop that

you can see the farthest when you

stand on the shoulders of giants,

Ceccarelli said. You meet people

along the way that help guide you. I

wouldnt be here without them. Well,

Ceccarelli may have had a lot of help

through the past 42 years, but from

the look of things, he had a speck

of gumption of his own.

A Day In The Life

Its a brisk November morning in

Mountain Home, Idaho about 40

miles southeast of Boise. By 5:30,

Ceccarelli is pulling into the parking

lot of the 10,000-square-foot building

that houses In The Ditch Towing

Products, one of the top design and

production facilities for innovative

towing products in the country. This

is also the home of a separate compa-

ny, Idaho Wrecker Sales, distributor

of Chevron and Century for Idaho,

Montana, and Northern Nevada. And

it is the headquarters of Aircraft

Recovery Solutions (see sidebar).

Its about 30 degrees. Clear skies.

The sun is breaking over the Trinity

Mountains. At this time of the morning,

the serenity has yet to be disturbed by

jets from the nearby Mountain Home

Air Force Base. Its a place where taking

a walk is called hiking by the rest of us.

Ceccarellis the kind of guy that gets

just a little misty-eyed over something

this beautiful. Im very thankful to

be living out west, he said, mention-

ing his cabin. If youve never gotten

up in the morning in the mountains

and made breakfast and smelled the

coffee. His voice trails off for a

moment before he resumes. Well,

how many times in your life will you

do that?As other employees begin to arrive,

the production day begins and excite-

ment builds. The facility for the three

businesses includes eight production

bays, two paint booths, and requires a

full-time engineer on site (Take a vir-

They do their own machining, have

a CNC high-definition plasma cutting

table, 3-D computer modeling, and

a 130-ton CNC press brake for bend-

ing up to 10-foot sheets of steel. The

facility has a full-service fabrication

shop and can completely restore or

customize new and used tow trucks or

carriers. Ceccarelli has delegated control of

his successful tow truck dealership,

Idaho Wrecker Sales, which opened in

1994, to one of the managers who

worked his way up from the paint

booth. The product line includes

wreckers and carriers with custom

installation of towing equipment,

detailed painting, and custom graph-

ics and lettering.

Ceccarelli also runs Aircraft Recovery

Solutions specializing in recovering

and retrieving aircraft, including disas-

sembly and transportation of disabled

or wrecked airplanes. For $3,999, tow-

ers can come to Boise in May for a

three-day training session in airplane

recovery run by Ceccarelli.

Mystery Gear

But almost all of his focus these

days is on In The Ditch, specializing in

designing and producing new towing

products like the recently patented

Speed Dolly, a lightweight self-loading

dolly for recovering disabled vehicles

with a wheel lift or sling.

Its just the kind of innovation that

is propelling Ceccarelli to his own

mountaintop. Were going to unveil

some stuff (at Floridas PWOF tow

show) that will blow away the indus-

try, he said. Thats how cocky my

crew is. Were so excited. Its so hard to

keep what weve got contained.

The Generation 2 Dolly design will

be unveiled in Florida. Its never been

seen before in the world. Its under

total secrecy, behind closed doors. We

think its that big. And we have a car

carrier design that is going to rock the

SAt Idaho Wrecker Sales we take pride in the craftsmanship we put in every truck. We are very aware

that your safety and livelihood is at stake when you operate the equipment we provide. That is why we

use top shelf material and follow strict wiring procedures when we assemble equipment.

We use Stainless Steel heat Shrink connectors that provide protection from the elements and

corrosion resistance to ensure proper conductivity. This has never been more important than now,

due to the highly corrosive deicing materials used on roads today.

We use Split Loom protective covering on all exposed wires. This protects wires from getting

chaffed or worn that will lead to failure.

We always use a rubber or plastic grommet when passing wires through a hole. These along with

the split loom ensure that the wires are never damaged.

When routing wires through wrecker bodies, tool boxes or pylon we secure in a metal zip tie rod

and zip tie the wires to the rod every 4 -6 inches to ensure the wiring is held in place and does

not get damaged.

We bring all of the wiring in a truck through a common junction box.

We ground the junction box with a heavy gauge ground wire from the truck frame. We use star

washers to ensure a good metal to metal contact is made on the ground cable.

We provide you with a color coded wire diagram of your truck electrical system.

States Tow Show, Tow Times Shine n Star, and Boise Roadster Show are just a few. So whether its a full

custom paint or a single color we will make it shine and last.

Swaged Wire rope

Swaged Winch Lines have two primary advantages over conventional wire rope: higher break strength and resistance to crushing. An oversized wire rope is swaged which reduces the voids between the strands. The result is more steel in a given area, which increases the break strength dramatically. These same characteristics allow for more surface contact with winch drums and sheaves which resists in crushing and deformation. Schedule periodic inspection. Link by link inspection of chain based on frequency of chain use, severity of service conditions, experience gained on service life of chain used in similar circumstances.

1. Clean chain prior to inspections, to make damage or defects more easily seen.

2. Hang chain vertically, if practical, for preliminary inspection.

3. Inspect link by link, where the following should be looked for: A. Bent, gouged, nicked, worn or elongated links. B. Cracks, scoring, or marking tending to weaken links. transverse markings are most dangerous C. Severe corrosion d. excessive wearchains with link having wear should be removed from service. 4. The jacks operate similar to an old style bumper jack. Both jacks will work with most tires up to 16 in rim size. The 5000 Series has an individual capacity of 1,250 lbs. and the 6000 Series has a 1,500 lb. limit. GOJAKs are priced individually, proper use requires at least two units. The mount is easy to install and can be locked with a padlock (not included). Two Mounts included in each kit, some assembly required.
