build a Bio-Medical Waste Thermal Reduction

Facility (BMWTRF) to provide jobs for the

county and service the rapidly growing medical

waste needs of the region.

Bio-Medical Waste Thermal Reduction Facilities deal with just that: all the bio-medical waste that a hospital or medical facility produces.

This kind of waste cannot just go straight to a landfill. By law, it must be properly processed fi tfirst.

EPA Air Regulations for these facilities changed in 2009 and became m ch more strictin 2009 and became much more strict.

Now, all current facilities have to be fully li i h h l b 2014compliant with the new rules by 2014.

Retrofitting is expensive and many facilities are ffalling behind or closing shop.

The US only has 57 active bio-medical waste facilities, and in Florida, there is only 1 left for �‘open use�’.

IWMS did extensive needs analysis that looked at two ymajor factors:

Finalists for IWMS included Georgia and Ohio,g ,but Baker County won out because it is near NE FL�’s large system of medical facilities and it is ideally located on the I 10 transportationis ideally located on the I-10 transportation corridor.

BMWTRF works in three major steps: Receiving Reducing and DisposalReceiving, Reducing, and Disposal

Step 1 �– Receiving:Medical facilities load and seal their bioMedical facilities load and seal their bio-medical waste in specifically marked boxes and prepare them for transport.Waste arrives at the BMWTRF where it is unloaded and weighed.The boxes are then separated by weight and staged for incineration.

The reduction process is a scienceThe reduction process is a science.

The sealed waste boxes are combined appropriately to achieve the greatest amount of reduction with the least amount of byproduct.

St 3 Di lStep 3 �– Disposal :This process reduces the content by 95% of its original eightoriginal weight.

The 5% balance is now inert and is ready for di l t li d l dfilldisposal at a licensed landfill.
