This is the program guide for the Northwest Region of Ivy Tech (Gary, Valparaiso, Michigan City, East Chicago). Ivy Tech Community College is the state’s largest public postsecondary institution and the nation’s largest singly accredited statewide community college system serving nearly 200,000 students annually. ACCOUNTINGThe Accounting Program develops an understanding of busi-ness, communications, accounting principles, business law,business equipment, and related areas of study in the field.Instruction is offered in computerized accounting systems.Technical skills in payroll, financial accounting, cost accounting,and tax preparation are emphasized.

Accounting duties typically include maintaining journals andledgers, processing expense reports, preparing financial state-ments, and analyzing managerial reports. Position titles mayinclude cost accounting clerk, bookkeeper, payroll clerk, inven-tory clerk, accounts receivable clerk, financial managementaccountant, and accounts payable clerk.

ADVANCED MANUFACTURING

The Advanced Manufacturing Program is a two-year Associateof Applied Science degree program, with one concentration andthree areas of emphasis: manufacturing design, productiontechnology and manufacturing operations.

The mission and purpose of this program is to provide itsstudents with educational experiences that will provide aframework from which they can pursue a career in themanufacturing industry as well as the skills for possibleadvanced placement or continuation of their educational goals.

The curriculum offers three different areas of emphasis, butfocuses on the integration of each area as used in systemicapplications.

The laboratory applications of the classroom study require eachstudent to use the equipment associated with the practice of theadvanced manufacturing program areas of emphasis.

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGYThe Automotive Technology Program prepares students with thegeneral and technical education needed for successful careers inautomotive service, sales, technical support, management andcustomer relations as well as continuation in higher education.

The automotive program trains students in three specialties:Auto Body Repair, Auto Service and Auto Management.

The auto body repair specialty covers the major concepts ofbody repair such as collision, frame, plastic and fiberglassrepair, estimating, surface preparation, painting and refinishing.

The automotive service specialty covers the major elements ofautomotive service, diagnostics and repair. The entireAutomotive Technology program emphasizes the “hands-on”learning approach taught by Automotive Service Excellence(ASE) certified instructors using current equipment.

The automotive management specialty combines automotiveservice and management courses to give students understand-ing of both. This specialty is designed to prepare students forcareers in estimating, service writing and potential managementof automotive related businesses.

COMPUTERINFORMATION SYSTEMS

The Computer Information Systems curriculum is designed toprovide a flexible and comprehensive education. Instructionincludes both theoretical concepts and practical applicationsneeded to produce graduates who are competent to meettoday’s business requirements.

The student will become familiar with programming languages,operating systems, database management systems, and webdesign, as well as application programming concepts and prac-tices. Computer InformationTechnology

The Computer Information Technology curriculum is designed toeducate students in the technical aspects of computers.Instruction includes both theoretical concepts and the practicalhands-on experience needed to produce graduates who arecompetent to work with today’s computer technology.

The student will become familiar with networks, network security,computer hardware, computer support and administration, andoperating systems. Students graduating from the ComputerInformation Technology program participate in evaluations ofproficiency in general and technical education.

CONSTRUCTIONTECHNOLOGY

The Construction Technology Program educates technicianswith broad-based skills in construction methods, estimation andspecification, and blueprint interpretation. Specialty courses areoffered to build on the foundation skills. The flexibility of the program allows students to pursue a full course of study or takecourses as needed to update skills.

Construction technology graduates can look forward to theenhanced knowledge of assistance of construction contractors inproject superintendence, estimating construction costs, bidding pro-cedures, project expediting, building layout and surveying, generalconstruction inspection, and other related specialty assignments.

CRIMINAL JUSTICEThe Criminal Justice Program addresses educational needs forprofessionals in a wide variety of both public and private crimi-nal justice facilities and service providers. Students will acquirean in-depth understanding of the various psychological, social,and environmental needs of clients served by these facilities.

Criminal justice professionals can be found in justice facilities,law enforcement agencies, adult and juvenile correctionalfacilities, community correctional programs, child advocacyprograms, juvenile agencies, victim advocacy agencies,protective services, halfway houses, group homes for children,and other human service agencies.

DESIGN TECHNOLOGYThe Design Technology Program is designed to be responsiveto the needs of business and industry. The program provides anenvironment conducive to the development of general knowl-edge, technical skills and critical thinking skills so graduatesmay enter their professions as technicians in industry.

Students will use their skills to produce drawings and projects inarchitecture or engineering offices, utility and manufacturingcompanies, computer graphic departments or ad agencies.

Students are prepared to respond to future advances andchanges in their professions. Graduates will have the necessaryknowledge and skills to choose related and challenging careersor continue their education at other post-secondary institutions.

EARLY CHILDHOODEDUCATION

The Early Childhood Education Program focuses on earlychildhood growth and development, including adult-childrelationships. Emphasis is placed on the development of skillsand techniques for providing appropriate environments and carefor young children.

Instruction is provided in the physical, emotional, social andcognitive areas of early childhood. The training is appropriate forcandidates seeking the Child Development Associate (CDA)credential or an associate in early childhood education. Thestudent develops competencies through classroom instruction,observation and participation in early childhood settings.

ELEMENTARY ANDsecondary EDUCATION

The Education Program is designed for those seeking to enter the field of K-12 education. An associate degree qualifies graduates forparaprofessional (teacher’s aide) positions in education or transfer to abaccalaureate program to complete a teaching degree.

With an Associate of Science Degree in Education, you will acquireknowledge of the teaching profession as well as a strong backgroundin general education subjects required of teachers. By completing a core of educational foundation courses, general educationrequirements, and the Praxis I exam, you will be ready to enterbaccalaureate degree programs as a junior to pursue your Bachelor’sDegree in Education.

ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGYThe Engineering Technology program will educate students to workwith engineers and other technicians to design, implement, andsupport engineering processes. Activities such as collecting,analyzing, and interpreting data and troubleshooting complexintegrated systems will be fundamental concepts in all coursework.

As firms continue to seek new means of reducing costs andincreasing productivity, demand for engineering technicians toanalyze and improve production processes should increase.Students will develop basic and advanced skills appropriate to theapplication of science, technology, engineering, and math that willenable graduates to enter the workforce and/or transfer to a four-yearengineering technology program. Graduates can continue theireducation at Purdue University statewide campus

GENERAL STUDIESThe General Studies program focuses on students taking theirfirst two years of college at Ivy Tech Community College and thentransferring their credits to other colleges and universities both instate and out of state. General Studies students complete a coreof general education courses which include communication,English composition, mathematics, life and physical sciences,social science and humanities courses.

TRANSFER OPTIONS:Articulated transfer opportunities are available with public four-year universities in Indiana. Additional opportunities for coursesand program transfer may also be available. HEALTH CARE SUPPORTThe Health Care Support program offers exciting opportunitiesfor people who are considering entry into the health care field, aswell as to current health care providers who want additionalcredentials or an Associate of Applied Science degree tocomplement their current skills. HOSPITALITYADMINISTRATION

The Hospitality Administration Program emphasizes the tech-niques of such hospitality leaders as Ritz, Escoffier, Statler, Hiltonand Marriott. By choosing a specialty area, students build leader-ship skills for the profession of welcoming and serving guests.

Students spend most of their time in kitchens learning to use theappropriate equipment and to prepare meals through actualpractice. They learn good knife techniques, safe food-handlingprocedures, and proper use and care of kitchen equipment.Courses in nutrition, menu planning, portion control, purchasingand inventory methods, proper food storage procedures, anduse of leftover food to minimize waste are taught. Students alsolearn sanitation and public health rules for handling food.

Human ServicesHuman service professionals play a variety of roles in the com-munity. They may assist clients in need of counseling or crisisintervention, lead and facilitate group activities and counseling,and work for not-for-profit agencies. Human service workersmay assist adults and children who need supervision with per-sonal hygiene and daily living skills in many different settings.They review clients’ records, complete intake and assessmentpaperwork, talk with family members, and confer with medicaland other caregivers to gain better insight into clients’ back-grounds and needs.

Human service professionals also provide emotional supportand help clients become involved in their own well-being.

LIBRARYTECHNICAL ASSISTANT

The Library Technical Assistant program prepares students to workas library technicians in public, academic, school or speciallibraries. Library technical assistants (LTAs) often work with thepublic and must be customer service-oriented and enjoy workingwith people as members of the library team. Under the supervisionof librarians, LTAs assist in areas such as circulation, preparationand organization of materials, reference, and instructing andhelping children and adults use the library. Students will becomeproficient in all aspects of Library processes.

MEDICAL ASSISTINGA medical assistant is a professional, multi-skilled persondedicated to assisting patient care management primarily ina physician’s office. The practitioner performs administrativeand clinical duties and may manage emergency situations,facilities, and /or personnel. A required externship under thedirect supervision of a physician provides valuable on-the-job experience.

MORTUARY SCIENCEThe Mortuary Science Program is designed to properly trainmen and women in the community who will confidently serve asprofessionals. Students will learn how to advise, guide, andsupport bereaved families through loss.

The mortuary science courses will teach students the skills tobe competent funeral directors and embalmers as defined bynationally accepted standards. The student demonstratesproficiency by successfully completing both national and statelicensing examinations.

Students learn how to demonstrate high standards of ethicalconduct to promote the dignity of the funeral service profession.

PARAMEDIC SCIENCEA paramedic is the highest trained emergency health careprofessional who provides emergency care to a patient as he orshe is being taken to the hospital. Paramedics can give moreadvanced care than emergency medical technician (EMT)professionals because they have more extensive training inperforming more difficult pre-hospital medical procedures.

PHYSICAL THERAPISTASSISTANT

The physical therapist assistant works under the supervision ofa physical therapist in a variety of clinical settings that mayinclude a hospital, nursing home, pediatric clinic, wellnesscenter, athletic facility, private office or home.

Physical therapist assistants work with patients/clients that mayinclude individuals with acquired or congenital conditions. Thesemay include stroke, traumatic brain injury, low back pain,arthritis, heart disease, fractures, cerebral palsy and workhardening conditions.

The physical therapist assistant is employed in the mainpractice patterns of physical therapy: musculoskeletal,neurological, cardiopulmonary and integumentary.

Physical therapist assistants assist physical therapists inproviding services that help improve mobility, relieve pain, andprevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients due toinjuries or disease.

PRACTICAL NURSINGThe licensed practical nurse (LPN) is an integral part of thehealth care team. The Practical Nursing Program is a one-yearcourse of study leading to a technical certificate.

This accredited program prepares the individual to take thestate licensure exam to become a licensed practical nurse. RESPIRATORY CARERespiratory therapists are registered health care professionalswho provide respiratory care for patients with breathing disor-ders such as asthma, pneumonia, emphysema, lung cancerand heart attack. Care includes assessment, evaluation, andtreatment of these patients.

Respiratory therapists work under the direction of a physician andassist in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patientswith pulmonary disorders. Patients treated by respiratory thera-pists range from premature infants to the elderly.

SURGICAL TECHNOLOGYThe surgical technologist is a member of the surgical team, qual-ified by didactic and clinical education to provide safe and efficientcare to the patient in the operating room. Open Door PolicyIvy Tech has an "open door" admissions policy for citizens ofthe State of Indiana. The College provides for open admission,advising and placement services for all persons, regardless ofrace, color, creed, religion, gender, sexual orientation, nationalorigin, physical or mental handicap, age or veteran status.Residents of other states may be admitted provided that theydo not displace an Indiana resident.

The College reserves the right to suggest the program orcourse of study that best meets the student's objectives andneeds.

Admissions Processstudents must:

1. Complete an application online. 2. Students must take Orientation.3. Take the Accuplacer Assessment or submit SAT/ACT

or college transcript.4. Complete application and FAFSA, (Free Application for

Federal Student Aid) if the student is planning to usefinancial aid as their form of payment.

5. Meet with a Student Affairs advisor to register.

Students with disabilities and special needs are encouragedto contact the Student Affairs Office for assistance. Supportservices are available and the College works with theDepartment of Vocational Rehabilitation and other serviceagencies to assist our students. Each campus is accessibleto handicapped students and has available designatedparking.

Financial AidIvy Tech Community College of Indiana participates inseveral federal, state and institutional financial aid programsdesigned to assist students with their education expenses.Students are encouraged to explore all financial aid optionsand to meet with a financial aid counselor if they haveadditional questions.
