PAW PRINTS | September 2013 Volume XXV Number IX 1 IVORY AND SNOWBALL’S ADOPTION Amazing Cat Adoption Experience By Nicole Olson Ijust wanted to take a moment to thank Carol at the MaxFund Cat Shelter and express our deepest gratitude for going far and beyond our greatest expectations to create an amazing adoption experience and a fabulous 8th birthday for my daughter Ashlyn. We had visited 5 shelters in the Denver Metro Area seeking a white fluffy kitten for my daughters 8th birthday as this was her only birthday gift request. When we arrived at MaxFund we were doubtful that we would find this elusive animal, although hopeful. Carol greeted us at the door and gave us a full tour of the facility. At the end when we didn’t see the perfect match she asked if we were looking for something specific. When I told what we were looking for she said we weren’t going to believe it, but she just hap- pened to be fostering two white fluffy kittens at her home. Of course we were so excited to meet them and to see if one would be a good fit for our daughter. Since they weren’t located at the shelter she offered to meet us back at the shelter the next day at 7:30 am (which happened to be her day off even!) to let us meet them. Of course the sec- ond we met Ivory and Snowball there was no going back. And we weren’t able to choose just one so we ended up adopting both kittens! When we were driving to the shelter to pick up Ivory and Snowball I called Carol to let her know we were on our way and that our daughter had no idea of our birthday surprise. When we arrived the kittens had brand new collars and bows and everyone at the shelter started singing Happy Birthday to Ashlyn. It was such a moving experience everyone was crying! Even the birthday girl :) I would have never expected such an amazing presentation but it was truly wonderful. So wonderful in fact, that my daughter for her birthday party decided to forego birthday gifts and requested that everyone attending her party bring pet supplies to donate back to MaxFund. We delivered all of her birthday loot today and once again all the ladies there made her feel so wonderful by taking her picture next to her donation pile, and presenting her with a certificate. She cannot wait to do it all again next year for her birthday! Again, I just cannot express how grateful I am to everyone at MaxFund, especially Carol, for going out of their way and above and beyond to make an 8 year old girl’s birthday so incredibly special. MaxFund will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we are so thankful to have found not only one perfect kitten, but TWO! Thank you again for everything you do. Ashlyn Olson

FROM THE WORLD OF GUSJust a HOP, SKIP, and a JUMP That’s all it takes for my sis,Gypsy, to get over an 8 foot fence. Dad has spent so manyhours, frustrating hours, trying to keep both of us out of hisgarden beds. Everything works for a while and then Gypsyfigures out a new way in. From there it’s no problem to leapmore than five feet up, get her front feet over the fence, andpull herself over.

Then Dad tried a trick that people have been using to keepcoyotes out of their yards: stinging pieces of PVC pipe on arope above the top of the fence. The idea is that the feetthat are trying to catch the top of the fence will instead findthe piece of PVC, which being loose on a rope, will rollbackward and dump the would-be climber back on hisrump. It took Gypsy four days to solve this problem. I’mthe only one who has seen her do it, and I’m not tellinghow she does it.

Dad has a new plan, involving a slanting-inwards fenceextension. I’ll tell you next month how that works.Everyone asks why Gypsy does it. One theory is that Gypsyis more antsy since Dad hurt his hand and can’t walk us asoften. Another relates to an attraction between Gypsy and anew puppy next door; could she be that fickle, deliberatelyleaving me on the other side of the fence? I think thateveryone’s overthinking it. Gypsy just wants to see what shecan do. And if she can: she will.

The Long TripPart I

Well, we are on our way. On the road we were at a stop light and there was a dog in the car next to us.Can you believe it, he started to bark at me and all the man did was roll down his window so we couldhear his dog better. Humans are weird; they just smiled at each other and laughed. Being my regal self, Ijust sat up straighter and glared at him. I am sure he was saying something rude. Then the light turnedgreen and we left the barking dog behind.

The second day we stopped at something called a Museum. Since we are traveling, Mom gets out the frontdoor but this time she started out the side, well I saw grass and thought we must be home so I jumped out.The minute I hit the ground I realized that something did not smell right so I just froze. I wanted to knowwhat was going on before I took another step. Before I had time to decide what to do Dad picked me up andput me back inside. Wow, that was close; I could have been left there if I had been a faster thinker. I wasinformed I was on guard duty until they got back, so I stretched out in Mom’s seat for a nap.

Our next stop was to see some bridges. I don’t know what the big deal is about something you drive a carover but Mom was happy. She said they are called “The Bridges of Madison County” as though thatmeans something to me. We stayed in a very nice campground with lots of trees and grass and bird voicesI had never heard before, and surrounded by fields of tall green things that grew yellow on top and madeMom sneeze (she use to blame me for her sneezing). They also have things called “lightening bugs or fireflies” which are fun to watch because their tails light up. Way Cool!!Well, got to go, will write with more fun stuff soon.

TOP MISTAKES BY CAT OWNERSBy Franny Syufy, About.com Guide

Adopting your first cat is a huge step, not to betaken lightly. Although cats have a reputationfor taking care of themselves, that fact does not

equal "no care is necessary." Before rushing in to buythat darling kitten in the pet store window (which is amistake in itself), take the time to do your homework,so you can avoid these common mistakes made first bynew cat owners. Forewarned, you will also be able toavoid mistakes made by experienced cat owners. Theresult will be a happier and healthier cat and a long-term companionship with another living being, thelike of which you never dreamed.

Adopting in HasteIf you “impulse-buy” a new purse or a new t-shirt, youcan almost always return it if it turns out to be the wrongcolor or the fit isn't right. No harm, no foul; the pursecertainly doesn't suffer from its rejection. But adopting aliving, sentient creature such as a cat and kitten, tobecome a family member, is entirely a different matter.

Adopting a new cat should be for keeps, so considercarefully before you make that decision.

Ignorance of the Costs of Responsible Cat CareAdopting a cat can almost be compared with adoptinga child. No responsible adoption agency would releasea precious child to someone who was not financiallyprepared to give him or her the best possible care.

While some shelters and cat adoption groups make nosuch investigation, you owe it to your cat to take care ofhis basic needs, as well as being prepared for emergencies.

Failure to Spay or Neuter a New CatEvery day I read pleas for help from people who failedto spay or neuter their cats: male cats spraying everyavailable surface of the house or escaping outdoors tofight other male cats; female cats who keep the householdawake with their loud yowling during estrus; and worseyet, "surprise" litters of unwanted kittens. The over-whelming cat population problem society faces is reasonalone to spay and neuter. Add the medical problemsaverted by S/N and there is no reason not to do so.

Neglecting Needed Veterinary TreatmentAlthough cats may quickly recover from minor illnesses, they can just as quickly die if an emergency isn't recognized.Cats need certain vaccinations, they need annualexaminations, and they definitely need and deserveimmediate veterinary care when they become sick or

injured. Don't delay in choosing (and using) a goodveterinarian.

False Economy in Cat Food ChoicesMoney saved by buying cheap cat food will be spenthundreds of times over on veterinary care. Cats areobligate carnivores, and need a good source of meatprotein. They do not need large amounts of grainfillers, especially corn, which is a cheap source of protein used by many cat food manufacturers. Learnhow to choose cat food and select the best brands youcan afford. You'll find your cat may eat less of the highquality food because they don't have to gorge to get thenutrients they need.

Declawing Without All the FactsMany an innocent new cat owner has been led downthe declaw path when a veterinarian asks, “Do youwant your kitten declawed when we spay her?” Someveterinarians consider declawing a "routine" surgery, while cat advocates consider it cruel, inhumane, andunnecessary in almost every case. Learn the facts sothat you can make an informed decision.

Allowing a Cat to Roam Free OutdoorsMany people believe cats deserve the freedom, freshair, and sunshine of an outdoor life, while many otherscan offer proof that cats can be very happy and healthyliving totally indoors. That the outdoors offers dangersnot found inside simply cannot be debated. Fortunately, there are a number of compromises that will give youand your cat the best of both worlds, while keepinghim safe and happy.

Neglecting Litter Box MaintenanceCats will consistently use a litter box, if it is keptscrupulously clean, and if the litter is not scented orunpleasant to the cats' feet. Carefully maintaining yourcat's litter box will almost guarantee you that you willnot be faced with litter box avoidance problems.Caveat: If your cat suddenly starts urinating outsidethe box despite your careful maintenance, you shouldimmediately suspect a urinary tract problem, which isa veterinary emergency.

Not Allowing a Cat to Be a CatA cat is not a child, and a cat is not a dog. Cats' uniqueways make them the endearing creatures they are. Onthe other hand, some of their traits may cause frustrationbecause we don't understand their needs. Cats instinctivelyseek out high places and sharpen their claws becausethey are cats, not because they are stubborn and disobedient. Our job is to accommodate those needsin acceptable ways.

Dear MaxFund,

I’ve had Teddy B (formerly called“Lucky”) for nearly 3 years fromyour shelter. He’s the most wonderfullittle Shih Tzu, now 7 years old andsuch a joy to my heart!

Margaret (Peggy) Ward

Dear MaxFund,

It is a challenge to find words toexpress my gratitude and appreciationto you and for you – you are kind!I’m so grateful to you for helping meby taking Gretchen into theMaxFund. We are mourning ourloss of her. The short time she wasin our lives she stole our hearts. Welove her and know that she is in agood place with people who careabout her wellbeing. Thank you,Karen, for your kindness. I willnever forget you.

Love, Linda Van Nostrand

Dear MaxFund,

Thank you for continuing to take careof our furry friends. You do a greatservice!

Nancy Miller

Dear MaxFund,

About a year ago I adopted two catsnamed Checkers and Mr. Wonder. They are good little kitty’s! Mr.Wonder loves feather toys andCheckers likes to lie on my Dad’sshoes!

Thank you for taking care of them!Clara Little

Dear Max Fund friends.

I wanted to let you know that Guntheris doing GREAT! He has learned hisname in a few short days, and is doingvery well going to the bathroom outside. He loves the yard. He will let otherdogs know that it is his domain, buthis curiosity abounds. He hops downto one end of the yard and then runsfull speed to the other end. He lovesbeing outside as often as we can.

Although totally lovable and friendlywith everyone wanting to hold or playwith him, I do insist he gets enoughnap time during the day. He plays veryhard, and has slept every night allnight. I usually get up between 5:00AM and 5:30, and it works well forhim. He has a large wire kennel I keep

in the living room, so he can see mein the room, making nap time not sodifficult.

He isn’t old enough to go to doggieday care yet, so I drop him off withmy vet’s office during the day. Hehas had a complete physical, and Itook in a fecal sample to test. Hisinitial exam was excellent.

The desk staff take turns playingwith him and taking him out forwalks. He has to stay away fromother dogs because he isn’t oldenough for a distemper shot yet. Iwant him to have lots of socializa-tion and interaction with others sohe maintains his happy demeanor.

Chew sticks are one of his favorites. He isn’t quite old enough yet fornylabones, but he does love his toys.He likes to take small treats and

throw them from his mouth into the air and then digfor them in the grass. It is really funny to watch himcreate various forms of play. He has learned to run upstairs which he learned himself, but he is not ready togo down them yet.

The groomer I use is at the Vet’s office. After he gets hisdistemper shot we will begin a grooming regimen.Melissa can’t wait to give him his first haircut! She haswon a lot of awards for show dogs, so I am anxious tosee his first haircut.

I can call him now, and he will run to me. I keep himon a leash, but he does a good job of staying nearby. Iam grateful he is not a runner.

Both parent and dog are bonding well, and I keep closewatch on him to keep him safe and happy. He will be agreat family member, and all who have met him highlyapprove.

Please thank everyone for allowing this wonderful littlecreature to become a part of the family. I loved hisname and kept it, and he seems to like it, too. Once hegets established and comfortable in a few months wemay look for a brother or sister to join him. Staytuned.....

MEET OLIVIABy Ilene Johnson

Olivia is a gorgeous shepherd mix that was born in2004. Not many details are known about her pastbecause she was abandoned at the shelter. Olivia

needed medical treatment when she first arrived, but sheis well now and ready to find a new home.

Olivia is incredibly smart, loyal, appreciative and cuddlywith the humans that she loves and trusts. She lovestummy rubs, playing with her toys, rolling in the grass, treats and nice long walks. Olivia is quite the kisser too. Many of our volunteers are head over heels in love with her.

She has begun to make friends with some of the otherdogs at the shelter. Olivia has become great friends withBecca, another one of our long-term dogs, and they loveto go for walks together. Olivia may prefer to be an “onlydog,” but if you have another dog at home, a meet andgreet would be terrific. The MaxFund is not sure how shefeels about cats. Oliver may do better in a home without cats.

When Olivia lets you into her world, it is a very specialplace to be! She is a beautiful soul and does not hold anygrudges. She would like to find her forever home whereshe feels safe, secure and loved. We know the best part ofher life is yet to come! She is also available to be fostered. If you want to give Olivia her forever home or you areinterested in fostering her, please contact the MaxFundoffice at (303) 495-4917.
