“I’ve never really walked a golf course...”

AND THINGS THAT ARE DIFFERENT ACROSS THE POND

You’re in a different land now. The rules are different. They’re “royal and an-cient.” “Ancient” as in “they didn’t have golf carts back then.” Even sheep didn’t like walking parts of this land. But that’s Scotland. Something to tout about when you return home. Whine not spoken here, only Scotch. If this is your first trip to this part of the world, just simply take it all in. Things will be different. “They” talk fast and funny. Just join in. The Scots really like Americans and we like them and the things they wear, eat (mostly) and do. A hundred years ago is yesterday to them. Even their “new” course at St. Andrews is over a hundred years old. Time has pretty much sat still here. Again, just absorb it and, as we say, “go with the flow!” It is possible that everything will fall into place and that no one will have any problems with anything, anyone or getting anyplace. However, this has never actually happened. It would be a first if it did. But just in case, remember, NOTHING is worth getting upset over. You’re here to enjoy yourself and we want everything to run smoothly! It’s highly likely you’ll make new friends - folks you’ll know the rest of your life. We’re experiencing Scotland as a group of near-ly 100 fellow ASGA members. That’s pretty amazing in itself.

Got a concern or problem? We can’t help you with your golf swing, but if it’s about your room, something lost, something found, etc. call the front desk. Here are some other numbers: General Emergency Number (this is like our “911”): Dial 999 from a UK based phone. Fairmont Hotel: 01334 837-000. Gleneagles Hotel: 01764 662-231 (from the US call 1-866-463-8734) Radisson Blu Hotel: 0131 557-9797 Tom Alsop’s Cell Phone: 704-577-9481 (okay to text to this number) Transportation: AAA Coaches will handle most of our designated transporta-tion needs during our event. Should you run into any problem due to a flight de-lay or some other issue, please call them at 01506883000 (from a UK-based phone). If you “miss the bus” for any reason, you may have to hire transporation on your own to get up with the rest of the group or to get you to the airport.

. . . To the Land Called Caledonia! It’s difficult to image that this game we play, golf, had its origins right here in this wonderful, little town - - St. Andrews, Scotland. And to think that many of our own ancestors, hundreds of years ago, traveled this land called Fife. Ten days in Scotland doesn’t do it justice. You could spend a lifetime here just discovering. When we announced our event last year, we had no idea how many would actually sign-up. With right at 100 in attendance this week, I think we were all happily surprised. So please make certain that you en-joy all that you can on this trip, not only the sites but your fellow members. ASGA’s roots go back to 1992. Meeting other singles through golf is our way of enjoying life. It has worked very well in 75 communities across the country for many of us. Outside of our real families, it’s our “other family.” So continue to spread the word and invite others to join our ranks.

General Announcements

The Most Commonly Asked Question at These Events: Where do we go next? Answer: Go to the back cover of this program for a general itinerary but specific details for each day are outlined throughout this program. Please don’t lose this program. We have limited quantities of “extras.”

We cannot give out phone numbers or addresses of members attending this event, so if you want their number, just ask them, not us.

Please wear your nametag at all events. You have 14 of them to use. Wear your lanyards when out in public, at airports, St. Andrews, Edinburgh, excur-sion days, etc. Let others know you’re part of our group.

Group Photo: Since we’ll all sit together at the Military Tattoo on our final night, we’re going to attempt to do a group photo. Details once we get there. Via email, everyone can get a copy of the photo, suitable for framing!

Swilcan Bridge Photo: Instead of thinking about framing the picture of Tom on the Swilcan Bridge at the Old Course (see page 3), why not frame your own picture? Show-up at the Swilcan Bridge (beginning of hole 18 on the Old Course) from 4-6pm on Friday, July 25th and we’ll get a shot of you, or you and a friend or everyone from your chapter. People will be playing the course at that time so this is subject to allowing them to play their game without interruption. Moving people onto the bridge and off quickly is imper-ative! Photos will later be uploaded to a website which will allow you to download and print. We don’t email photos out.

Rules on Tipping in Scotland: Tip when at a restaurant for your food. If in

a bar having a beer, locals don’t tip.

Hotel & Meals Related Announcements

We’ll be at the Fairmont St. Andrews for the first three nights, then Glenea-gles for two nights, then the Radisson Blu in Edinburgh for four nights.

A free shuttle runs from the Fairmont to downtown St. Andrews, however, it may fill-up quickly each time it comes by. The shuttle runs from 9am to 6pm from the hotel to St. Mary’s in St. Andrews. If you need a taxi, expect to pay around £8-10 to get back to the hotel so split the charge with fellow mem-bers. The town of St. Andrews is only two miles from the hotel. During the day, you can walk to it along the Coastal Path. See the hotel concierge if you have any questions and double-check all times.

Check with each hotel to see when breakfast opens each morning. Some mornings we leave very early to get to the golf course on time. Get there early while there’s still plenty of haggis.

Folks with early flights on Saturday, August 2 may miss breakfast at the Radisson Blu if you have a very early morning flight. We’ve arranged for a

5

“breakfast-to-go” for you if you need it. Notify Tom if that’s the case. Other-wise, we’ll see you at the regular breakfast. It’s about a half hour ride to the airport from downtown Edinburgh at the most.

Golf Related Announcements

Golf Play: We are not playing competitive golf while in Scotland, however, this does not preclude you from making some “friendly wagers” with your fellow players.

Closest-to-Pin Competitions: At North Berwick and the Royal Burgess we will have proximity markers on some par 3s. An ASGA $25 gift certifi-cate will be mailed to you after the event is over if you won the competition.

Mulligans: You may take one (1) mulligan for each nine holes of play, anywhere on the hole, including the green. We only do this because we realize life is not fair and neither is golf. Plus, it makes you feel better if you take that extra shot - - somewhat legally. However, no mulligans on the first tee at Gleneagles or Kingsbarns. The rules do permit provisional balls anywhere if you feel your shot cannot be found. Those don’t count as mulligans according to the yet-published “Revised Rules on Mulligans.”

Male/Female: There are about three women to every man on this trip and we always put at least one man in each foursome except on rare occasion

Caddies & Carts: Most folks who wanted caddies or carts (buggies) have already lined them up, however, if you’re here and you’ve decided you want a caddie/cart, this is something you’ll need to arrange on your own. To hire a caddie, you might best work through the hotel concierge. Also, don’t try to hire a caddie on the day of play, it might be an impossibility.

Old Course: If you want to play the Old Course, you’ll have to do it through the Daily Ballot (see hotel concierge for details). If you get a tee time for the Old Course on a day we’re playing another course, there is no refund for the golf or any variety day item.

If we’ve had a hard rain and it’s muddy, we’ll play “lift, clean and place” for the rest of the round. No announcement; just use your own judgment.

Our format will be PYOB: Play Your Own Ball. Play the ball down like the Scots do (no fairway bumping!). Once in a lifetime won’t kill you! Keep moving forward. Make sure the group behind you is not constantly waiting on you - - unless the group in front is holding you back. Most importantly, hit the ball towards the hole. If you throw your club, throw it towards hole.

Score! If you want to keep your own scorecard as a keepsake, secure an additional one in the pro shop.

Are You Stuck at an Airport and Can’t Get to Edinburgh? Should your flight get cancelled or you do not make a connection, please con-tact our transport manager, AAA Coaches, at 0150-688-3000 (from a UK-based phone), or, if calling from the U. S., call or text Tom Alsop first at 704-577-9481, then AAA Coaches (+44-150-688-3000 if calling from the U.S.).

Today is your flight’s arrival day unless you came in a day or two earlier. Upon being motor coached to the Fairmont St. Andrews, you’ll want to leave your golf clubs at the front of the hotel for storage. Make certain your name is on your golf clubs and very visible. Ten people rented golf clubs. They will be on hold for you in a front-of-hotel storage area.

You’ll most likely arrive early, register at the front desk, but understand that check-in time at the Fairmont Hotel is 3:00pm unless they tell you otherwise. We will not have a registration table in the lobby all day long, instead, your program and nametags will be at the HELP DESK at 4pm today, prior to our cocktail party and dinner in the Atrium (lower level).

Until your room is ready, you can either hang-out in the Kittocks bar adjacent to the lobby, or take the shuttle into St. Andrews and start check-ing it out. Shuttle times run from 9am to 6pm. If you want to take a nice walk, ask the concierge how to get to the Coastal Path. It runs along the beach and takes you into St. Andrews. You can take the shuttle back to the hotel later in the day. Wear tennis or good hiking shoes!

Atrium: Help Desk opens at 4pm. Cocktail party begins at 5:00pm. Cash bar (or put your drink charges on your room). Dinner will begin at 5:45pm. “Old Tom Morris” to speak 30-45 minutes at 6:30. We eat early tonight because your body’s telling you it’s well past nighty-night.

Today is also ballot day for those who wish to play the Old Course as an optional round. See hotel concierge to (hopefully) arrange a round on the Old Course. No refunds are offered at any other venue, golf or otherwise, in the instance you secure an opportunity to play the Old Course.

Breakfast at the Radisson Blu in Edinburgh. This is departure day for most everyone. Based on airline schedules, motor coaches will take you back to Edinburgh Airport at various times (see next page). Because most of us are on international flights and need to be at the airport two hours before flight time, some may miss breakfast at the Radisson. In that case,

you’ll be able to grab a breakfast-to-go in a bag as you depart.

Getting to the Airport . . .

AAA Coaches is making the arrangements to get everyone back to their respective airport. 96% of us fly out of Edinburgh, the others fly out of

Glasgow.

Down the road . . .

We hope you’ve enjoyed your trip to Scotland. If you enjoyed the event, tell others! We’ll anticipate another trip to another beautiful country in 2016 — possibly Northern Ireland (so hold onto your leftover British Pounds!), Spain or Portugal. We invite your input and suggestions into the process. Our decision would be made about one year in advance of

the actual trip.

In February or March, 2015, we anticipate another trip to Hawaii. We gen-erally head there every two years. Also, in November of this year, we’ve already posted a cruise to the Caribbean. SinglesGolf.com/cruise pro-

vides more information for you.

Okay, we can’t really leave you . . .

. . . without telling at least one Scottish joke. So here goes . . .

(you’ll have to wait until you get to Scotland to see this one . . .)

Setting your alarm and getting out of bed is your responsibility. Getting you to the airport on time is ours. Below is a schedule of motor coach departures to the EDI airport. We have figured no more than a half-hour drive to the airport from the Radisson Blu hotel, plus it’s Saturday morn-ing and traffic should be light. Included in your package price are trans-fers to and from the airport, however, we are not responsible for people who come in days early or leave a day or two late. Tipping not required.

If Your Flight Is Between or at Your Motor Coach

All of our departure times are based on the times you’ve previously given to us, however, if there is an error, don’t notify ASGA, just take the ap-propriate motor coach. If anyone wishes to take an earlier motor coach, you may do so subject to seating availability.

Remember to bring all of your luggage, golf bag, carry-on, etc. down to street level at the Radisson. Check with the front desk as to where the motor coach typically parks. Motor coach drivers will wait NO MORE THAN 5 MINUTES after departure time for you. ASGA not responsi-ble if you miss your motor coach departure. If you are late, you may need to take a taxi to the airport.

All of the above transfers are handled by AAA Coaches, phone +44 (0)15068883000 or [email protected]

If you have receipts and want to recover your value added tax (VAT), you will most likely need to do so BEFORE you go through security at the airport.
