Dear Friends, While reading thank you letters from the Friends of Music 2010-11 scholarship recipients, it was hard not to think of families’ involvement and influence in the lives of these talented young musicians. Katherine Williamson’s letter brought families to mind in a big way. Katherine, who is receiv- ing the Alan P. Bell Memorial Friends of Music Scholarship, says that she comes from a family of musicians: “My father and stepfather are both in the Minnesota Orchestra, and my mother is a horn professor at the University of Minnesota. I grew up listening to Brahms’ symphonies on my father’s old LP player every Sunday morning and hanging out in the green room of the hall on the weekends. I’ve tried to imagine my life without the violin, without music, and the thought makes me cringe. I simply cannot go a day without it,” Katherine stresses. Patrick Lenning, the recipient of the Patsy Earles Friends of Music Scholarship, grew up with two brothers who played instruments: viola and percussion. His mother was very supportive of the arts, so he took up playing the viola when he was seven years old. “Over the years I devel- oped a deep passion for music and, especially, the sound of the viola, and I knew that I wanted to dedicate my life to aiding in the spread of classical music in society,” Patrick wrote. Joshua M. Sieh grew up in a family of 11 siblings and two parents who all made music. From an early age, he was playing piano, violin, and singing. and learning the violin. The John and Adele Edgeworth Guarantor Scholarship enables Joshua to study recording arts at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Luckily for Katherine, Patrick, Joshua, and the other 1,600 or so students at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, they are still part of a family—the family of students, faculty, and staff who love making music and the people who make it. People connected with the Jacobs School of Music provide a very nurturing environment, similar to what these students would find in their own homes, but on a larger scale, of course. Luckily that love extends to us—the Friends of Music donors who make so many of these young musicians’ dreams come true by making it possible for them to study music at Indiana University. For the 2010-11 academic year, the Friends of Music provided $411,000 in scholar- ships for some 80 talented young musicians. This is no small accomplishment, and it is one that we have pursued since our founding in 1964 and will continue to pursue. It is your love of mu- sic and young musicians, plus your generosity, that makes it all possible. To help show our appreciation to our donors, the Friends presented the Three IU Tenors at a reception on Feb. 6. We had forgotten that it was Super Bowl Sunday, and we apologize to all of you who were pulled in two directions. For those donors who attended the Tenors program, it was a delightful experience. Andrew Lunsford, Anthony Webb, and Nick Fitzer treated us to a number of virtuosic arias. Following the tenors, many of us attended the Concert Orchestra performance in the Musical Arts Center, under the direction of David Effron: another fine experi- ence. Next year, we promise to avoid hosting an event on Super Bowl Sunday, especially since the Super Bowl will be in Indianapolis and many of you may be attending. There’s certainly no sin in loving music and sports! As we head into the 2011-12 academic year, remember that we are all part of the Jacobs School of Music family. Please donate as generously as you can to our talented young musicians. They will provide you with endless opportunities for enjoying their music during the coming year.
