The May 2014 trip of IU president, Michael
McRobbie, to Vietnam marked the first-ever
official visit by a standing IU president to the
country. Over the course of two days, he met
with various members of the government
and IU alumni, as well as David Shear, the
United States ambassador to Vietnam.

The visit served to strengthen the university’s existing partnership with Vietnam National University. It emphasized the ways in which IU’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) could promote expertise in the areas of financial management and public policy. Another topic discussed was IU’s expansion of its scholastic offerings in Southeast Asian culture and language. Of particular note was the institution’s forthcoming center for Southeast Asian studies.
