1 | Page ITU Activator Community Seminar Course Overview ITU ACTIVATOR COMMUNITY SEMINAR – OVERVIEW This document provides an overview of the ITU Activator Community Seminar. The aim of the course is to support developing National Federations (NFs) to create a team of people who have the basic skills to grow and develop the sport in their area. By the end of the course Activators will be able to: Plan and deliver training activities (swim, bike, run and transition) for participants Organise and deliver fundamental multi-sport skills training sessions to novice children and adults in a fun learning environment. Supervise participants to ensure their safety and welfare are maintained. Effectively manage and facilitate triathlon activities in their community. Work with club officials, and National Federation staff in a variety of areas. Have a basic understanding of the rules and regulations of the sport. Maintain ethical values and practices and keep participants (children and Adults) safe. Organise and promote simple multisport events, e.g. Aquathlon, Triathlon, Duathlon and Cross- Triathlon. Be able to support the NF by putting in place the relevant governance procedures and practices. ITU Activator Community Seminar Location Targeted NFs host the course locally in run up to an event that they are hosting. Attendees 16-25 usually from single NF from the host NF. Target Audience Federations where Triathlon is in its early stages of development with limited support for the growth of the sport. Entry Requirements None Selection Open to all Course Overview Facilitators focus on helping Activators to develop the skills to plan and deliver a local event (day 4). Delivery is flexible depending upon the local resources. Focused on applying practical skills. Delivery Two facilitators deliver the course: - One with a profile of Technical Officiating & Event Organizing - One with Coaching profile Delivery Style Facilitator Led appropriate to local situation Resources Written Workbook and online content (text & video) Schedule 4 days on-site plus additional online reading and micro tasks and reading Key Outcomes Attendees inspired to pursue key roles in triathlon, e.g. coaching. Local event organized (as pre-cursor to National Championships). Assessment Online informal Assessment, informal feedback from Facilitators Course Content General Triathlon overview, including Technical Official (rules), events, intro to training (coaching). Certification Attendance Certificate

This document provides an overview of the ITU Act ivator Community Seminar.

The a im of the course is to suppor t developing Nat ional Federat ions (NFs) to create a team of people

Short description

Pre-Course Tasks

Candidates are required to review shor t onl ine content on Tr iath lon and answer a mini onl ine quiz. They are a lso required to complete a personal prof i le, out l in ing their background re levant to the course.

Role of Act ivator

This sect ion out l ines what is expected f rom a person under tak ing the role of an act ivator, inc luding the d if ferent aspects and type of act iv i t ies they wi l l undertake , and equipment they may use. I t a lso provides guidance on eth ics , equal i t y and d ivers i ty

Understanding Part ic ipants

This sect ion expla ins why d if ferent people take par t in sport , and why a l l the d if ferent reasons have equal importance and value in the wor ld of Tr iath lon.

Safety & Welfare

This sect ion covers the basics of how Act ivators can provide a safe environment where the welfare of a l l is taken into cons iderat ion. I t inc ludes safe use of equipment , appropr iate c loth ing, how to assess r isks and manage emergenc ies is a lso covered and d iscusses how to deal wi th and repor t injur ies.

Swim This sect ion covers how to set up a swim course, inc luding discussion of a l l the factors that can af fect a safe and fa ir environment, which need to be considered. Informat ion is inc luded on d if ferent safety ro les , and equipment including water craf t .

Trans it ions Informat ion concerning how to design a safe and fa ir t ransi t ion zone, wi th focus on applying the ru les , and specif ic organizer equipment.

Bike Informat ion provided on designing a b ike course, pos it ioning of volunteer team, managing communicat ion across the volunteer team, spec if ic equipment and how to deal wi th hazards.

Run & F inish How do des ign and manage a run course, and the f inish area are d iscussed a long wi th the bas ic ru les . Managing a id stat ions and a recovery area are deta i led.

Team Relay How to des ign and manage a team re lay event , cover ing the d if ferences between th is type of event management and an individual event.

Planning an Event

Guidance on a step by step approach to p lanning and running an event, based on the 5 p i l lars approach. W hat dis tance should your event be, what type of event? How to run a t im ing system, al locat ing volunteers to ro les wi th in the event team, mainta in a secure venue, up to a medal ceremony a nd af ter event act iv i t ies.

Training Act iv i t ies

Basic t ra in ing and rac ing t ips of par t ic ip ants , how to p lan tra in ing act iv i t ies for par t ic ipants before the event so they get the most out of the event . Some examples of tra in ing act iv i t ies to improve the sk i l ls of par t ic ipants are inc luded for swim, b ike, run and trans i t ion.

Spor t & personal Development

This sect ion d iscusses how Act ivators can develop themselves and a lso seek to grow and develop the spor t of Tr iath lon in their area.

Assessment Task

The onl ine learn ing p latform has some s imple quizzes which candidates are required to complete, in addi t ion to successfu l ly complet ing the pract ica l e lements of the course whi lst observed by the fac i l i ta tor team.

ITU Act ivator Community Seminar – Facil ity Requirements

Theoret ica l Sessions

A classroom for of the course (4 days) allow for (e.g. 60 minutes before/ after the course). To comfortably fit 25-30 people, with tables laid out in groups of 4 or 5, not in a square or U-shape. This will promote group work as required for the course. Good natural lighting and space to stand up and move around. Stable Internet access. Access to a Copier/ printer at the venue. Data projector, extension cable, white board/ flip charts. Security: the room must be able to be safely secured, and be able to store bikes and equipment, if the room will not be able to store equipment a separate room, should be booked.

Pract ica l sess ions

Swimming Pool (minimum 20m length and minimum 2 lanes for course) - 2-3-hour booking, Cycling Environment - large concrete or tarmac car park or similar 50m x 20m, free from cars. Run environment, can be inside sport hall, same venue as cycling or at a running track

ITU Act ivator Community Seminar – The event (Day 4)

DAY 4 On the f inal day of the course, the Act ivator team wi l l put on a l ive Tr iath lon (or mult i -spor t) event for the local community. The aim is to pract ice the sk i l ls learned dur ing the course and to create an event which can become a regular occurrence and a l low the development and progression of th e spor t for the benef i t of the community in the long term.
