    Trade within regions remains strongin North America, Europe and Asia.Europe has the highest level o intra-

    regional trade, with 71 per cent o itsexports remaining within Europe in2011. A total o 53 per cent o Asiantrade is exported to Asian countrieswhile nearly 48 per cent o NorthAmericas exports are to memberso the North American Free TradeAgreement.

    In South and Central America , 27per cent o exports went to othercountries in the region in 2011. In theCommonwealth o Independent States(CIS), Arica and the Middle East, thetotals were 20 per cent, 13 per centand 9 per cent respectively.

    Aricas main destination market orexport is the European Union, ollowedby Asia and North America. A littleover hal o CIS exports go to Europeand the Middle Easts main market isstill Asia. Less than a quarter o Southand Central Americas total exports goto North America and 22 per cent goto Asia.

    The value o world exports o commercial services rose by 11 per centin 2011 to US$ 4,170 billion, exceeding pre-crisis levels o US$ 3,850 in

    2008. Europe showed signs o recovery, with annual growth o 11 per cent

    in 2011. In contrast, Asian economies saw their growth rate halvedcompared with 2010, mainly due to slower growth in transportationservices and other commercial services.

    North Americas exports o commercial services expanded by 9 per centin 2011, the same as in 2010, while in Arica exports stagnated ollowingthe Arab Spring uprising that began at the end o 2010. The CIS wasthe most dynamic region, with exports o commercial services increasingby 19 per cent, ollowed by South and Central America with 13 per cent.

    Largest traders in

    commercial services

    The United States remained the worlds largest trader o commercial servicesin 2011 with US$ 976 billion o trade, making a surplus o US$ 186 billion.

    The United Kingdom, which ranked third with US$ 444 billion, recorded alsoa surplus o US$ 103 billion. Both the United States and the United Kingdomhave recorded a surplus in services every year since the 1980s.

    Germany, the second-largest services trader with US$ 542 billion o trade,recorded a defcit o US$ 36 billion in 2011.

    Among the leading emerging economies, China remained a net servicesimporter in 2011, while India registered a positive balance, with the value oexports exceeding imports.

    supply through

    aliates in 2009

    Services supplied by US majority-owned oreign afliates to China andIndia proved more resilient to the global crisis than exports o cross-border services.

    In 2009, US exports o commercial services to India decreased by4 per cent. However, services supplied to India through commercialpresence (i.e. through US majority-owned oreign afliates establishedin India) rose by 34 per cent. Similarly, in China services supplied by USmajority-owned oreign afliates grew by 25 per cent, while exports ocommercial services grew by only 2 per cent.

    In contrast, services supplied through US majority-owned oreignafliates to Europe and North America declined, ollowing the samepattern as cross-border exports.
